Although this is a book telling Danny Gregory's story of his wife and their son Jack, it's also his story about what prompted Danny to teach himself to draw. If you're a seasoned artist, or just beginning to dabble, quickly run to your computer and order any of Danny Gregory's books. He is one of my favorite authors! He is so inspiring and sensitive. I took one of his online "Sketchbook Skool" classes and was immediately hooked. He's down to earth, humorous, and captures your heart with his life stories and his incredible way of urging anyone to draw, because it's really not about drawing, it's about seeing. Danny's books have helped me have fun drawing and painting things like my breakfast in the mornings, and if I'm really stumped as to what to draw, I've been known to take off my shoe and try to draw my foot. It's not perfect, it's fun! And, if you're looking for a perfect rendition of a subject or object, get out your camera and take a picture, but it won't be as much fun!

I liked it. I was drawn in by the story of why he went into drawing that I read in the preview (his wife getting into an accident) but I felt the book focused on the repetitive theme of how drawing helped him cope .... and that he recommends it. That's great buuuut I felt the story only hit the surface of what was going on. I wasn't expecting great literature but I felt there was so much missing, so many more questions about the accident, about everyday life after the accident. In the book, he said things changed after his wife's accident, they did things differently - well how did you do them differently?On the other hand, this is the first sketchbook I ever bought (although I have bought graphic novels before). Perhaps the focus is on the sketches. In which case, I'm not sure I'd've bought it. The sketches were nice, just not sure it would draw me in enough to make a purchase.

I bought this book as a present for my friend. I read this book many years ago and found it very moving and inspirational, thus, I began to draw/sketch my world around me as did this author. It totally changed how I saw the world and was a brave thing for me to do as I am a terrible drawer...it didn't matter...only Everyday Matters!

Very touching story about how his family unit was changed by his wife's unfortunate accident. His drawings/sketches are expressive and demonstrate a style that I really enjoy and will try to mimic on my own. I liked that this was not a "how-to" book, but still it visually shows a drawing style, from a simple doodle, to more completed drawings (with watercolor), how the reader could learn to draw. Love this little book!

It's not all the time we get to see a book which illustrates what the author is telling us in self study and learning. In this book I believewe are allowed this opportunity. A tragedy becomes something larger to those involved and everyone becomes something largerthan they might have expected through events. That is not to say we should hope for something "painful" to occur to truly bring outour character, our core being - from which we grow, learn and decide. In this case an event cause this. The result appears to have produced a catharsis of imagination and a eventual growth, a thightening of the family, and as a result the contents of this book.It and The Creative License... Are well worth the reading, viewing and trying.

I was not expecting anything when I started this book...frankly, I'm not sure I remember ordering it. In any event, the parallels between this graphic memoir and my own life make this book read more like an answered prayer than merely another memoir.I take that last part back. It's not just that the author's experiences mirror my own life that makes this book notable. Rather, it's that Gregory manages to capture his own HUMANITY...without resorting to irony or the manufactured self-deprecation that seems to plague the modern memoir that makes this book so notable. I mean, finally!, someone has managed to write an HONEST memoir, one that does not require an attorney's Release of the Facts as a prologue."Everyday Matters" reads like a private journal, without the pretention that comes when the author knows other folks'll be reading it. Gregory's sketches are likewise uninhibited and imperfect; together, the text and illustrations create a personal, intimate environment for the reader that is inviting and judgment-free; none of the "You shouldn't have looked (though I knew you would, so I gave you my best side)" business that is the meta-text of so many memoirs, but instead offers a reassuring, "Well, that's me, hair and all...what do you think?"A thoughtful, generous gift from Gregory to his readers.

Everything about this book, from its honesty to the strength in vulnerability, is gorgeous. This book is like a small paper friend, one that encourages you, gives you hope, makes you smile and gives you a quiet, full appreciation of the lives we have. I've read it so slowly because I want to savor it. Danny Gregory also gave me "permission" with this book to draw - scribble, doodle, scrawl - in my own journals. It's one of the books I keep close on my shelf and close to my heart.

Danny Gregory has a touching outlook on life. He has lived through some events that have led him to view life as a gift. It has led him to know that Every Day truly Matters. The drawings in the book are delightful, illustrate his insights, and provide inspiration to sketchers all over the world. This book provided me with a glimpse of an artist's motivation, ideas for my own sketchbook/journaling and food for the soul. It's well worth the read, and saving for perusing off and on as need arises for personal motivation.

In this book, the author takes people into some of the poorest neighborhoods of America and what it means to be evicted.This book follows along with real people who live in the 'hood and what puts them in precarious financial situations so as to be dealing with unscrupulous landlords. Some of the tenants have problems with drugs, low paying jobs, a lack of child support, child delinquency, physical and mental disabilities and other similar social problems.As for the landlords, they are shown to be smarter than we think they are. They know who they can make the most money off of and they employ a variety of schemes to make money off of the poor. We also see how some tenants abuse the properties where they live, so landlords know that they are often taking a gamble when buying houses - even derelict properties - and renting them out to certain types of tenants. We also learn about how the government plays a role in all of this behavior.This is a well written book. There is strong language but it's the way that people speak, so it's not for show.Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for writing an honest review. I have been involved with low income housing in Milwaukee for over three decades as a landlord and as an attorney for landlords and tenants. I know the neighborhoods and characters in this book all too well. If you want insight into poor people’s lives as they struggle to keep a roof over their heads, you should buy this book. The other reviews are right about how gripping those stories are. But if you are a graduate of Trump University and think you’ll get some insight into how to make obscene profits by renting to the poor you’ll find anecdotes but no real verified research about the business of landlording. Most significantly, you will not learn the truth that bringing evictions totally destroyed the rental business of Sherrena, the leading landlord protagonist.Strangely, though Desmond interviewed 30 landlords he only focuses on two. One is Tobin, a mobile home park operator on Milwaukee’s south side, which is largely white and Hispanic. Tobin indeed makes a lot of money but that is because he does not have to maintain or repair 95% of the “dwellings” in his park. Tobin rents out a concrete slab with utility connections and the tenants buy or bring their own trailers and pay their own utilities. As owners they are responsible for the exterior and interior condition of their dwelling. Only 5% of the trailers are owned by the park and rented to tenants as a living unit. So Tobin is a landlord only in the sense that you might have a landlord this summer when you drive your Winnebago to a Jellystone Park and pay rent for the parking pad and utility hookups.Then we have Sherrena who with her husband runs about 18 buildings (mostly two-family flats) in the African-American neighborhoods on the north side of Milwaukee. In a chapter titled “The ‘Hood is Good” Desmond blithely accepts Sherrena’s boast that she has a net worth of $2 million and nets $10,000 a month in rental income. Desmond is honest in portraying the many difficulties Sherrena has in collecting rent from her struggling tenants but he doesn’t do the background research (available from local court records) about the many thousands of dollars in unpaid rents and damaged units which sort of cut into profits a little bit.As to her supposed net worth of $2 million, that averages out to $111,000 for each of these 18 ghetto properties - certainly far more than some of the real dumpy ones are worth – but the author does not research the amounts of the recorded mortgages against these properties (ranging between $64,000 and $119,200) which further greatly reduce the claimed net worth. That would have been revealed in the many foreclosures filed against Sherrena’s properties which started within a year after Desmond’s visit to Milwaukee.So when this book came out in 2016 the curious reader might want to know: if the ‘hood is good for the landlord how much better has it gotten since the author did his study in 2009? Research so far shows that not one of Sherrena’s properties remains in her ownership. Starting in 2010 many were bulldozed, went into city ownership via foreclosure for nonpayment of real estate taxes or today sit as haunting, blighted eyesores. A few were foreclosed by lenders, were fixed up and are under new ownership. Evictions by Sherrena ended in the year 2010. So did her non-existent profit. She joins many small-time under-capitalized landlords who have gone bust in Milwaukee and elsewhere since the Great Recession started in 2008 with the bursting of the housing bubble.Please note that I still give the book 4 stars. Its significant defects in reporting on the “profit” aspect of its subtitle are outweighed by the important and detailed research on the effects of eviction in creating and perpetuating poverty. A better and expanded housing voucher program for low income tenants is much needed. Landlords nationwide should join Matt Desmond’s call for its implementation.

"Evicted" is the story of eight families in Milwaukee, WI--six families struggling mightily to pay the rent on their increasingly crappy apartments, and two sets of landlords. The landlords are either a new breed of venture capitalists or merely slumlords, depending on your perspective. Since roughly 2000, rents have shot up while the properties have either stayed the same or declined, so that by 2013 about one out of every three poor families spent seventy percent of their income on housing. Think about that for a minute.As a result of this, poor families are always one crisis--really one unexpected expense--away from being evicted. The ramifications of being evicted on one's emotional, financial, and physical states are profound. First, once someone gets evicted, finding any kind of housing becomes extremely difficult--one of the ladies called 90 apartments before she found one that would take her and her two kids. You can place blame on these struggling families if you want to, but the fact of the matter is it's extraordinarily difficult for them to succeed, or even to just get by.I found this book very interesting--to say I enjoyed it would be wrong because much of it is depressing. It made the problems of the urban poor personal. I quite liked some of them and I was rooting for them--"Please, let this landlord call her back!" I felt bad when Vanetta went to prison for armed robbery after her hours were cut, and I cheered when Scott finally got clean. I read it all the way through the endnotes, which are also quite interesting and provide some insights or background info. I really wanted to find out how all the families were doing today (the book takes place in 2008-2009) because I became attached to them and had come to care about them. Unfortunately the author doesn't tell you what became of them, although if I had to guess I'd say their lives continued on in more or less the same vein.A word on the swearing: this is a well written, professionally done sociological study. The author only uses swears when he's quoting one of the people he interviewed. If you were desperate, poor, depressed and angry, you, too might be given to curse words.If you enjoy sociological and/or cultural topics, if you care about equality in America, if you are interested in how grinding poverty affects families, pick this up. I learned a lot.

My daughter could not get enough of this book! We ended up having to buy 3 so far. She wanted to do the whole book in one sitting. This is a great book for learning scissor skills and other important skills every preschooler should know before starting kindergarten. Lots of fun, keeps them busy for hours. Highly recommended. I purchased this book to go with the expensive curriculum that I get each month and I find that Sierra loves working in the workbook more than with the curriculum. The colors, text and activity is perfect - it's bright, big and really gets her attention. We are definitely going to look at the alphabet & phonics books and an easy math book for her to begin to work on those skills. I bought this book for my son thinking that it would essentially just be cutting wavy lines and various shapes.I was pleasantly surprised to find that although there are cutting activities on every page, there are also lots of other skills involved. There is some counting, basic science (categorization of animals), some math, reasoning, shape recognition, and more. The activities get more challenging through the book, which is great. My son was so engaged by it that he got through the first 16 pages in one sitting-- that's HUGE for a 4-year-old.

My daughters preschool told me that we needed to work on ‘scissor skills’, so I bought this to help us overcome working those tricky scissors. The book is more than just cutting, it’s cutting and pasting, so you will need a glue stick. It’s a pretty short book, so once you get started, you will blow right through it. I wish there was a little more content to go with the cutting, but it’s a pretty simple book and the idea is really just to practice scissor skills, which it does pretty well.Couple things to note: this book is super colorful, which we loved. One of the best printed workbooks I’ve seen. Also comes with stickers which is motivating and super fun for the toddler set.

My daughter (4.5 years old in PreK) needed some extra practice with cutting, so I looked for some workbooks that would possibly help her and keep her interest. This particular workbook was the MOST fun to her because of the various activities on each page. My only criticism, and reason for the four star review, is that for the actual activities could be more challenging for the intended age group. I’ve included photo to show a couple of sample pages, and you can see that it’s not too difficult to determine which person gets which hat. However, the real skill being practiced is trying to cut out each individual square from the page.Since most of the shapes to be cut out are either squares or rectangles, I challenged my daughter to try and cut the pictures out themselves. They weren’t always cut perfectly, but it was a good challenge and way to mix up the activities.I would definitely recommend this workbook to anyone looking for something to help with simple cutting and pasting skills that are fun for kids. It certainly held my daughter’s attention for a good half an hour or so at a time.

Good variety of activities - kids cut, glue the back and stick on based on the activity on the pages (fill in missing puzzle pieces, match rhyming words, match count of objects). I'm buying more for my other kids. At the right level for 4 year olds who know their basic numbers and understand rhymes / phonics. I feel that 3 year olds may not be ready for some of the better activities in this book. My toddlers cannot work on this independently however. I need to pick out (cut out) broad sections (from the last few pages) that are relevant to an activity before letting them at it. After that, they cut along dotted lines, glue the correct side, and paste the pieces (after I"ve explained what the page is asking for). It's a good 5-10 minutes of independent activity before I need to guide them to the next one. Good price point too.

The item came with only 1/3 of the total pages. Somebody decided to use most of the book and sell whatever their child didn't cut up, instead of throwing it out like anyone else who isn't a shyster would've done. I expected to get most if not all of the total pages. I won't buy from this seller again.

I used this for my daughter who just turned 4 and stays home with me. I did the cutting but she loved pasting the pictures and we both liked how the pages mixed lessons about rhyming, counting, money, and puzzles. It kept her interested and she kept wanting to do more so we finished it in less than a week! I need to find more like this because it is both fun and educational!

Lots of pages for practice, but it is a little more advanced than I expected (for my 2.5 year old just beginning to use scissors). There are good activities on the pages so it is beyond just cutting (i.e., cutting out different amounts of pennies and matching them to prices of objects) but that requires math skills beyond my daughter's abilities now! I was hoping the cutting would be bigger shapes, but it demands pretty good scissor skills to begin with. A good purchase for just a few dollars, but we'll have to wait a while before we can benefit from it.

My 3.5 year old LOVES this book! This was her introduction to scissors and cutting, so I didn't have very high expectations. I was very pleasantly surprised that she could do it! The parts to cut are sorted by the page number they go with and all located in the back of the book. The pages are all perforated so they are easy to tear out if you have a few kids that want to work on it at the same time or you want to show off some skills on the fridge! The activities that go with gluing are pretty simple, I think a 5 year old would probably be bored. Matching colors, shapes, etc.

I gave it 5 stars because I don't think it would be fair to do otherwise, but for me, it is way too technical and more of an automotive engineering handbook.Lots of graphs, formulas, and illustrations. I was really hoping for a more basic everyday man's guide on suspension geometry and such.

This is the mother of all books about race cars. If you were missing deep theoretical background on tuning your sports car or street car, this volume is for you. It is impossible to describe in detail what this textbook is about, in a single review.What I liked most is the chapter on dampers (shock absorbers). It gave me the answers to lots of questions that I had before reading this published work, for example how to choose "ride/handling compromise" when adjusting damping ratio? Why stiffer dampers are more comfortable on large-amplitude bumps, while softer dampers provide smoother ride on small-amplitude bumps? "In an automobile, a suspension is used to reduce the discomfort induced by unevenness in the highway. As measure of discomfort is the vertical acceleration that the passenger is subjected while sitting in the vehicle". The book demonstrates the model where the passenger is linked to the road via three springs in a sequence: tire, coil and the seat, and one damper (shock absorber). There is a graph showing passenger vertical acceleration depending on the amplitude (frequency) of road irregularities, for distinct shock absorbers with various damping ratios. For a stiff shock absorber this diagram shows relatively flat curve, where the vertical acceleration is almost independent of frequency of bumps. For the soft shock absorber, there is a very high peak (several times higher comparing to a stiff damper) of vertical acceleration for the low-frequency bumps, and this acceleration curve quickly decays as the frequency increases. There is another graph, "transient load transfer analysis", which shows that with soft dampers, the suspension load in a turn fluctuates. This is another answer to the question why stiffer dampers (to a certain extent) provide better handling.The order of the chapters is somewhat sporadic. The books is a mixture of sections of engineering information (formulas), historical background, sketches (e.g. torque arm rear axle suspension), recipes (KONI's published instructions for damper adjustment), and sample data (e.g. Goodyear tire data). Nevertheless, the work is so deep that in a couple of years after it's publication, it had been started being used as a university textbook. Based on comments from faculty, SAE have requested the authors to prepare a supplementary book of problems, to help the universities to examine the students.I also recommend "Theory of Ground Vehicles", by J. Y. Wong, in addition to this book.

Used by UNCC mechanical engineering department as part of their automobile technology program. Very detail but well written. A non-engineer would find the book to be too technical, but to a mechanical engineer, the book is well written and illustrated. I use many of the examples in the book during my race car setup clinics to help students understand the dynamics. Can cure insomnia if you do not love the details on how/why a race car does what it does.

Outstanding engineering reference book with a good bit of background and historical perspective. Broad and detailed information which I've used to develop some outstanding street suspension systems to retrofit muscle cars. It is an engineering book, nowhere is there is a list of parts to buy for your car. The intent is to understand and balance the principles listed, and design your own.

Great book for new people approaching suspension design. This is my second copy, the first was given up to the FSAE gods.

Amazing book, and a must have for anyone interested in vehicle dynamics/simulation. My only gripe with the book is the variable descriptions in the first half of the book. They are listed on the first page of the book and described prior to each equation. Unfortunately their definitions get lost amongst the sea of sub/super scripts and reused variables. I also highly recommend buying the companion book for extra computational practice.

This is the bible of suspension and chassis dynamics and race car setup. I was advised to get it by the man who was second in command at GM Staff Research some years ago. I hold a lap record at least partially due to what I learned from this book. I've given two friends of mine copies. Simply put - a must for any serious racer or race car shop.

Good book, but should use SI units. Also it oftens talks about calculations without actually showing them written down. Sometimes maths gives better explanations than words

As the title indicates, this book introduces the concept of the Balanced Scorecard: "The Balanced Scorecard (BSC) provides managers with the instrumentation they need to navigate to future competitive success. Today, organizations are competing in complex environments so that an accurate understanding of their goals and the methods for attaining those goals is vital. The Balanced Scorecard translates an organization's mission and strategy into a comprehensive set of performance measures that provides the framework for a strategic measurement and management systems. The Balanced Scorecard retains an emphasis on achieving financial objectives, but also includes the performance drivers of these financial objectives. The scorecard measures organizational performance across four balanced perspectives: financial, customers, internal business processes, and learning and growth. The BSC enables companies to track financial results while simultaneously monitoring progress in building the capabilities and acquiring the intangible assets they need for future growth."The authors then go on to presenting each of the four perspectives in details and discuss how the Balanced Scorecard measures link to the strategy. In the subsequent section, the authors focus on how the Scorecard is used to manage business strategy. The framework presented revives the traditional thinking around strategy and how it is implemented in a very pragmatic manner - balancing both strategy and its associated execution. The scorecard measures are chosen to drive the attention of managers and employees to those factors expected to lead to competitive breakthroughs for an organization."10- "The disconnect between strategy formulation and strategy implementation is caused by barriers erected by traditional management systems - the systems organizations use to:-establish and communicate strategy and directions;-allocate resources;-define departmental, team, and individual goals and directions; and-provide feedback."11- "The scorecard provides a common framework for organizing the planning process of corporate support departments. It enables these departments to understand the strategies of the entire corporation and the individual SBUs so that the support departments can develop and deliver better services that help the operating units and corporation achieve their strategic objectives."12- "Strategic planning and operational budgeting processes are too important to be treated as independent processes. Strategic planning must be linked to operational budgeting if action is to be tied to vision."13- "Mintzberg and Simons identify key aspects of this newer or emergent view of strategy:-Strategies are incremental and emerge over time-Intended strategies can be superseded-Strategy formulation and implementation are intertwined-Strategic ideas can arise throughout the organization-A strategy is a process"14- "...the measurement framework in the Balanced Scorecard should be deployed to develop a new management system. The distinction between a measurement and a management system is subtle but crucial. The measurement system should be only a means to achieve an even more important goal - a strategic management system that helps executives implement and gain feedback about their strategy."15- "Most companies introduce the scorecard to drive single pieces of the management process: Obtain clarity and consensus about strategy, achieve focus, leadership development, strategic intervention, educate the organization, set strategic targets, align programs and investments, build a feedback system."

Many organizations are in the process of implementing the `Balanced Scorecard', yet some are struggling. Either they fail to implement the measures, or the measures fail to have the expected impact.Organizations execute four 'mission critical' activities, for a scorecard to succeed. Each is more difficult than might appear and must be performed by a different part of the organization.1. Articulating the strategy: Top management must articulate and disseminate the strategy. More than measuring success, a performance system communicates a strategy. Without a strategy, the performance measures become an `anything goes' exercise. `Anything goes in theory' means that `everything stays in practice'.2. Designing the measures: A core task team must design the measures to avoid uneconomic behavior. Poorly thought out measures create counter productive activity.3. Operationalizing the measures: Once measures are defined, programmers operationalize and automate them.Even revenue can be complicated in practice: When is it recorded, and what does it include. The task team may well find themselves getting what they asked for, and not what they wanted.4. Getting the buy-in: Change management skills are needed to align the changes and create buy in. Dilbert cynically states that there are two steps to a great performance measurement system. 1) Gather information and 2) ignore it. For performance measurement to work, the system must be accepted, understood, and aligned to the reward.The book, `The Balanced Scorecard' by Kaplan and Norton has become compulsory reading for middle management. It is very good, with the one weakness that it makes performance measurement look deceptively simple.

The Balanced Scorecard looks at the important issues of alignment, coordination, and effective implementation. Most business thinkers like to start with the big picture, and end there. As a result, most ideas for going in a new direction are quickly diluted by misunderstanding, falling back on old habits, and lethargy. Since Peter Drucker first popularized the idea of business strategy, there have been vastly more strategies conceived than there have been strategies successfully implemented as a result. Much attention has been paid to devising better strategies in the last four decades, and little to implementing strategies. The big pay-off is in the implementation, and The Balanced Scorecard is one of handful of books that provide important and valuable guidance to explain what needs to be done to successfully execute strategy. You must have more measures, and different measures than the accounting system provides. You also need to link measures and compensation to the key tasks that each person must perform. This book is simply the Rosetta Stone of communicating and managing strategy. The Balanced Scorecard is the beginning of the practical period of maturity in the field of business strategy. Read this book today to enjoy much more prosperity! I also recommend that you read The Fifth Discipline, The Fifth Discipline Handbook, and The Dance of Change to understand more about the context in which you are trying to make positive change. These four books are excellent companions for each other.

Once I received the kindle edition, I realize that the book doesn't come with the hard copy original images.Very disappointed.

This book does not deliver on the expectations built by the initial Balanced Scorecard articles. It does very little to clarify and structure the concept and approach to building a Balanced Scorecard. There are a few interesting ideas but they get lost in a repetitive and hard to read text.
