I usually love this writer...I enjoy the historical retelling reimagined and the sexual overtones of her books. The stories are usually enthralling, intriguing and interesting. This was not the case. In fact, very much the opposite. I drug myself through a little over half the book and finally I decided to give up...which I never, never do but I just couldn't take one more minute of forcing myself to read a book that I didn't care for. The subject matter was horrid and the religious discussions dragged on and on and the relationship between this Queen and Henry was just revolting. That part was captured perfectly. She has oodles of books way better than this one. Choose one of those.

The story focussing on and told from Kateryn Parr’s perspective leaps into action from the first pages. In keeping with most interpretations Henry the VIII is portrayed as a monster. The story opens with Henry’s proposal and expectation that Kateryn, a 30 year old widow and already passionately in love with Thomas Seymour will marry him. Torn between following her heart and duty to her king and her family, she identifies herself as shrewd and intelligent. As a future Queen her personality resonates more with a modern day woman’s expectations. Knowing that like before her when the attention falls upon a member of the court it is a double edged sword; making the wrong move with brutal and capricious Henry will result in death.This story should appeal to romance fiction readers, although some might consider it a bodice ripper and Kateryn too sexualised for the sixteenth century. Before Kateryn accepts her fate as Henry’s sixth wife, she commiserates with her lover, Seymour, and her sister, Nan, who reminds her of her duty to their family’s legacy and fortune. Phillipa Gregory portrays Kateryn Parr as deeply conflicted with the dead body of her late husband barely cold in the grave, her hopes of marrying her dashing lover doomed when Henry, old, bloated and grotesque, throws himself at her feet. She is not only repulsed by the very thought of marrying Henry, but is terrified that when like her predecessors she falls out of favour she will be dragged to the Tower. It is a sweet read for an adult, but very clearly targeting the middle grades and early teens.Goodreads Description:

When Annie moves from London to a small town in the midwest, she struggles to fit in. She gets off to a bad start when she makes an enemy of her school's queen bee, Kelsey. But she discovers a new passion, the exciting sport of roller derby, and makes friends with the cool and quirky girls on her team, the Liberty Belles. She also meets Jesse, the friendly boy who works at the roller rink, and Tyler, a cute, all-American sports star.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters are well written, and come across as believable and relatable. Annie and her Dad have an amazing relationship, something rarely portrayed between teens and their parent(s).I really appreciate that Ms. Sparks keeps the girls wholesome, even while putting them into realistic situations. Their wholesomeness doesn't come across as phony or gimmicky, but instead feels authentic. They're allowed to behave appropriately for their age & still be popular, cool, creative, smart, athletic - in short they get to be individuals. Sure they are still learning about who they want to be when they 'grow up,' but really, at what age do we ever stop growing up? Including kids of all different races, sizes, ethnicities, physical & emotional abilities, each with their own interests, just broadens the appeal and increases the target market. Not to mention helping educate readers about all the differences & similarities among people, yet many of them share the same experiences, showing the reader that they aren't alone.Showing the way Annie thinks things through is an excellent guide for young readers on ways to handle difficult situations with as much grace as one can. Annie isn't perfect, and she struggles with her parents splitting up, but she deals with it, just as she deals with the guilt she feels for deciding to move to the States with her Dad rather than stay in London with her workaholic Mom. She loves her Mom, but realizes that she is actually happy in the States and needs to do what is right for her, especially when it is impossible for her to make both parents happy by living with them - at least not unless she clones herself.Lexie, Annie's first and best friend in town is an incredible artist. Together they dream up a way to surprise Annie's Dad with a mural of Lexie's artwork on one of the newly painted white walls. The two of them have a great time with the project and even more fun showing Annie's Dad their surprise, demonstrating that doing things for others can be even more gratifying than doing them for yourself. By asking Lexie to create the mural Annie is showing her friend how much she appreciates her talent as an artist, boosting Lexie's self-esteem.Another great example of independent thinking and reasoning comes when Annie tries out for cheerleading even though she worries that she will lose her two new friends Lexie and Jesse if she makes the squad. While waiting to hear if she made the squad or not Annie participates in the weekend training session for the Roller Derby league, with a chance to make the league at the end of training. She ends up loving it, and can't help but compare the genuine camaraderie the derby girls share to the petty meanness she witnessed during the cheerleading try outs and from those already on the squad. Eventually something happens that forces Annie to choose between being a cheerleader or a roller girl. She struggles with the decision, but once made she feels lighter than she has in days. Throughout it all Annie never opts for being popular over having authentic friendships. The difference between how happy Annie is with her friends and how insecure Kelsey is even when surrounded by her' followers' is pretty obvious.This book is a fun and easy read, and even more fun because it is easy. By easy I mean entertaining enough to hook you, pull you into the story, and make you invested in how it all turns out. It is easy to see more books in this series as Annie and her friends grow up and deal with more adult issues the older they get. But for now it is really nice to see kids being kids, and written in a way that I really think middle grade kids will relate to. I can also see teens & young adults enjoying the story, as it has elements they are either living through or have experienced in the not so distant past. Even those of us old enough to be the parents in the book will find it a sweet read. At least I know I found it to be engaging, even if I'm old enough to clearly see the subtle, positive messages in the book.

Wanting to please her dad, she tries out for the cheer-leading team, even though the captain, Miss Popular Kelsey, has it out for her. But there is another sport that catches her eye, roller derby. After watching one game, with her new best friend, Annie is hooked. But, what about cheer-leading? And, the hot soccer player Tyler, perfect All-American boy. Can Annie juggle everything?I read this book in a day. I couldn't put it down. I laughed, a lot. It isn't a book that is going to be a classic, or make it on any prestigious lists; I think that's why I enjoyed it. It is such a light-hearted gem not to be missed. I liked Annie a lot, but it was her best friend I enjoyed maybe a little bit more. She just had such a great sense of humor. Called cheer-leading, cheer-weeding. She was one of those characters that was someone I would like to have in my corner. I could pass on oogling over Tyler, but there was also Jesse, who works at the roller rink and could have potential with Annie if she gets over the All-American Soccer boy crush. I don't think dating an athlete is all that in regards to having a social life, but Annie thinks so. It was kind of annoying. But, really one of the only flaws in the book.The writing was nothing fancy; which worked. The story wasn't convoluted; it was very suitable for the age group the book is geared towards. Although I am no longer in that intended age group, I liked how I didn't have to think while reading it. The flow was good. The dialogue was decent. It all meshed well. There is definitely a positive message in this book. Annie is a good role model; she is strong, speaks up for herself, a good friend, and makes good decisions (on what, you'll have to guess. Is it roller derby or cheer-weeding?) I am looking forward to reading the second book. It was just too fun to not want to continue the series. I am a little biased though, because I do like the roller derby. I loved the movie adaptation of Whip It starring Ellen Page (I haven't read the book yet) that is very similar to this novel. Both girls are discovering themselves and how they fit in where they are living. Many girls in high school can relate to this book. The roller derby choice isn't brought in for the violence factor. It is tied in a great, encouraging way.I would recommend this book if you are looking for some light reading material. It is a great, one to two sitting read. You aren't dedicating too much of your time. It isn't a heavy commitment. And funny. Endearing. Leaves you with a smile. Give this little gem a try. You won't regret it.

At 5' 11 1/2", 14-year-old Annie is too tall to continue with gymnastics. Cheerleading sounds like the next best thing. Her new friend Lexie tries to persuade her otherwise. Then Lexie takes her to a roller derby bout, and Annie is hooked. She now has to try out to be a cheerleader as well as a roller girl.This book is great for young teens. Annie is rediscovering herself. She is finding a new passion to replace the old one. She is making new friends, finding cute boys, and dealing with some mean girls.I really enjoyed this book because I know quite a bit about the world of roller derby. It was pretty accurate. I think a lot of young teen girls will find it enjoyable as well. They will relate to many of the struggles Annie is dealing with. Sporty girls will like the competitive sport of roller derby. Skater girls will love it. Even nonathletic girls that just like dressing funky will find fun in this one. I do warn that the cheerleader type will definitely not like how they are portrayed. For that and the fact that the story is very predictable, I think it is a strong 4 stars rather than 5 stars. I received this book today only to find out that the lettering in some pages washed off like if the printer ran out of ink. The entire book seems like if it was printed at a regular printing machine, i disregarded that detail, just to find out later that page 586 fell out of the book like if it was never attached to it, or glued to it, and i just opened this book for the first time because i received it today! I'm going to return this printed copy of the book and get the hardcover version.

WARNING! Do not buy the paperback version. After five weeks of gentle use--it never left my desk--pages began falling out. Not tearing out, but simply falling out, as if the binding glue had failed. Amazon, to their credit, allowed me to return the paperback copy past the normal 30 day limit. Thank you Amaz-ing-on. Still need the book--hopefully the hardcopy will be more durable.

This is another text book that is actually fun to read. The front contains basic scientific information about plants. Leaf structure and how it is defined, reproduction, flower structure, etc. The body of the book is species of plants and cultivars. There are not any color pictures or photographs. Merely line drawing for individual leaves and flowers. It is arranged in alphabetical order based on Latin name. There is cross reference in the back that has common names.I use this book all the time because I am always trying to identify a species of plant, or a cultivar within a species. Mostly for customers, but also myself. It is also quite helpful in determining what cultivars are likely to do well, and which ones have underperformed in the landscape (in the opinion of the author of course). The author frequently expresses his opinion, and he does so in an entertaining fashion that makes using this book fun. There are lists of what plants are quick references for what plants work well in different soil or moisture condition. What zone plants are suited to. Some indicate air pollution tolerance. There is a wealth of information in this publication.If you are an amateur looking for an easy identification guide, or something with great photos, this is not going to suit your needs. If you work in the nursery or landscape industry and seriously love plants, this can be one of your best friends.

While I usually classify Dr. Dirr's books as additions to the basic gardening library, I have to include this one in the basic book section--one you should have. Most all of us have woody landscape plants and among us the knowledge of how to care for them is mixed. Having been associated with the Master Gardener Volunteer program in three states, I find this book to contain the answers to many relevant questions that presented to the call in volunteers.

excellent reference book. Just keep in mind that Dr. Dirr is coming from a Georgia climate perspective so keep that in mind. The book has all the most common woody landscaping plants.

The book is fantastic...it is extensive, very detailed and precise, the drawings are accurate and lovely. All in all, I'm very pleased with the book and am certain it will be very useful among my reference books.The bad things was that about the last fourth of the pages had a severe crease in them that made it hard to use for a long time. I put it under a large stack of books and used it from that weighted stack with much effort. It has straightened out a great deal, but is still not perfect. I needed it immediately or I would have refused to accept it, and returned it.

This was a "recommended" book for a horticulture class. I'm so glad I bought it. The information is presented in a friendly style, like you're sitting down for a cup of coffee with the author and he's telling you about the interesting plants he has seen and grown. Details of various cultivars make this a valuable reference that I'm sure I'll use frequently.

At first glance this book does not look like much next to the stack of glossy, color gardening books. Spend a half-hour with it and it's value becomes apparent. No photos but that doesn't hurt this book's usefulness at all. The drawings in this book are extremely helpful. I have an "Elm thing" that a relative was positive was an American Elm. I had my doubts since I think it was planted by bird droppings. I opened up the manual and looked at those line drawings and saw the new buds on Siberian Elm are spherical and the ones on American are pointed. The buds on my tree are round. A positive ID.Information on how plants do in California is rather sketchy but there are tidbits in this book you won't find anywhere else.This is no dry treatise: When Dirr gets on the subject of a plant he hates, it makes entertaining reading. Some of his commentary is thought provoking as well.I bought the hardcover. Someone mentioned the thin pages. At 1200 or so pages they need to be to save your back. The cover looks like it can be wiped off with a damp cloth and the binding is sewn, not glued. With reasonable care this book will last a long time.Should be on every gardener's shelf.
