Review

"A helpful guide for anyone on a journey of healing. He has written things in a concise format with bite-size understandable suggestions to improve well-being. As a psychiatrist I was quite excited to read this book... and can confirm it is extremely useful information. Everyone should apply these things at some point in their life." -- Dr. Neva Shebini, Psychiatrist"Your book is fantastic! Thank you. I love it personally and intend to suggest all my clients read (and practice) it as well. Thanks for sharing your healing journey with the world."-- Dr. Tina Lightner-Morris, D.Min, MS, LCPC, IAYT-C, BCC"Simply put, this is the best book that I've read in a while that recommends a holistic approach to treating depression and anxiety. That being said, the author doesn't dismiss the validity of traditional therapies and medications when they become necessary."-- Sue Gold, LCSW-R, ACSW"50 Things to Do Before Seeing a Psychiatrist is an excellent resource. It's full of time tested techniques proven effective towards living a healthier life both mentally and physically. Mr. Baldizzone lays these techniques out in a thoughtful, easy to digest manner. I've been recommending this book to clients since I first picked it up in February of 2017."-- Jack D. Love, MA, LMFT Psychotherapy and MediationÂ

You know, sometimes the exact right thing comes into your life at exactly the right time and this book is just one of those things.I can't imagine anyone's life *not* being improved by taking just some of the steps suggested in this book. The author's openness about his own life and his own struggles is very comforting and encouraging...he's been there and he's not afraid to admit his life isn't impossibly perfect, so he doesn't come across as preachy or self-righteous. He's with you, he is you and he genuinely wants to help. It's also impressive that this book isn't so clinical that it's just plain boring. He shares enough of himself to make for compelling reading, which is rare in a book of this kind...reading it doesn't feel like a chore. What I love is that this book does something few other self-help books do: it gives you concrete, doable steps YOU can take every day, on your own. All roads in this book do NOT lead straight to therapy and medication. The whole goal is to explore other options FIRST.Sometimes you read a book and you think "yeah, that's totally me, but now what do I do about it?" Joe Baldizzone fills in those blanks with actions that may seem deceptively simple at first glance, but prove to be very powerful in practice.I've actually had extraordinarily bad experiences with therapists over the years and I'm really not too keen on trying therapy again, so this book is amazing for me. I can go at my own pace and not drag myself through the often useless, sometimes painful and occasionally damaging process of in-person therapy. This book is so useful, I've already picked up 4 copies for friends and family. (While writing this review, I just thought of a couple more people I'd like to share it with, so I'll probably order a few more copies!)I can't recommend it enough. Thank you so much for writing this book, Joe!

I love this book. This author is very positive and down to earth. He has struggled with depression, knows how it feels, and has used all of these methods himself. I have tried prescription drugs many times through the years to deal with depression and anxiety, and I have never been able to tolerate the side effects long enough to get any benefit from the drugs. Even if the methods in this book don't work for you, they won't do you any harm or cause negative side effects. These are all practical things that you can do on your own in real life, like exercise, meditate, journal, etc., that don't cost a fortune or take up so much of your time that they become a full time job. (Some of the activities, like exercise or improving your diet, would be good things to do with a spouse or good friend.) Many of the methods he suggests, like changing your diet or exercise habits, will improve other parts of your life as well. If you are battling low-grade depression and are still able to function, I would recommend this book---there is nothing here that will harm you and you have nothing to lose.

I have been a licensed family therapist for over 40 years. This book is filled with practical and very useful suggestions and advice the author has clearly used successfully in his own life struggle. I have begun to recommend it to some of my patients. Not only has he used these ideas personally, he has cataloged them here for your consideration and use. Much of therapy consists of learning about the parts of your history/personality that keep you from doing what you need to do to be happy. This book is some straight talk about what you can do to make your life more fulfilling. If, after reading and applying Mr. Baldizzone's suggestions, your life has not improved, then it may be time to seek professional help (not necessarily a psychiatrist).

I strongly recommend this book. A quote from page 136: "When you delay doing things that you know you should, want or need to, those things remain in your subconscious and have a lingering, gnawing effect. They steal little bits of your joy by prancing around in the background of everything else you think and do. They sap your energy quietly. You know they're there, you just pretend they aren't and find methods of covering them up. You might do other chores to feel that you're at least doing something productive, or you might even add to the gnawing by doing destructive or time wasting things...." You probably know all of that already but it's good to be reminded... and to be offered consolidated steps to get on the right track; this book does just that. So heed that quote and get the book then start digging in! Books have been saying such things for years but this book, as the title says, gives you 50 things and how to actually do them. Like any other book of this nature, you can't just read it and be done. However, after a quick read through (it reads fast) you can go back and easily pick out the tools you want to start working with. Of course, you will have to spend some time going through the things and writing them down separately and detailing your strategy/schedule for easy reference but you owe it to yourself to spend some time to do that and, again, any book would require that but this book lays things out as simply. I have haphazardly and coincidentally done some of the things in his book over my life and they have certainly helped me to achieve things that I certainly wouldn't have achieved without; I'm going to assume that adding his suggestions and applying them in a thought-out/consistent manner will take me to the next level- it certainly has done so for him. There IS hope. There is PROMISE. Follow the book. Baby steps. As to the author and his credibility and the efficacy of his methods/suggestions: It is remarkable to see who Joe has become compared to the picture of who he was and the mental challenges that all but kept him shut-in the house or intoxicated during his early 20's so the things he has done, and has put down on paper for us, clearly worked.

I mean that in the best way. Like so many other sagas, this skips from one exciting moment to the next, skimming over the years and majority of people living peaceful lives. But what moments! Alliances made and broken, vendetta, treachery, courtroom drama (almost), all with an uncommon underpinning of the darkly supernatural. Those eerie passages, I think set this apart form so many others. Perhaps this didn't have the sustained narrative of Njal's Saga, for example, but plenty to pull the reader forward. An, since the original language is a closed book to me, I really appreciated the natural, modern flow of the translation. One thing I especially enjoyed about this rendering was the translator's familiarity with other sagas, offering footnotes showing where this intersected others - dozens of them, it seemed. I can tell I'll be spending time on them, too. I can't wait to chase some of those references, once my wife gives it back!-- wiredweird

Eyrbyggja is a saga heavy on the supernatural. Characters do not always disappear when they are killed, but often return as ghosts to cause mischief, murder and, in one instance, to prepare a meal while stark naked! Hauntings, omens and visions of the afterlife are treated as part of the natural order of things. This is essentially a saga of the clans of early Icelandic settlers, especially of their feuds and disputes, over two centuries. The genealogies get very confusing. The translator includes a List of Characters in the front and A Glossary of Personal Names at the back. You will be constantly referring to these, but will still get your Thorbrandssons mixed up with your Thorlakssons and wonder which Thorgrim is which. This work must be a treasure trove for Icelandic historians and geanalogists. One of the delights of the book is the occasional weird name, like Thorstein Cod-Biter and Ketil Flat-Nose.This is not the courtly or romantic epic of the French or German culture of the same period. This is a narrative as hard, cold and bleak as the Icelandic landscape in which these characters struggle for survival. There is some black humor, and I guiltily confess to enjoying the story of the cowardly Scotsman. Speaking of Scots, this was Sir Walter Scott's favorite saga and might well have helped him to form the concept of the historical novel. This is a readable translation with some useful footnotes and a good introduction. The latter however, should be left until after you read the story itself, as it contains a lot of spoilers.

The saga covers the settlement of Iceland and the power struggles that emerged among some of the prominent families, culminating in the rise of Christianity as the established religion. For those who are interested in exploring the sagas but feel discouraged from doing so by the perception that the stories are complicated by obscure and hard-to-grasp underlying cultural and religious meaning, will in fact find the Eyrbyggja Saga to be quite accessible. Overall, very readable - aside from all of the name-dropping - and a good starting point for for further reading as it ties in with a number of the more important sagas.

"Wierd" in the pulp "Wierd Tales" sense. There's definitely more of the supernatural in the Eyrbyggja Saga than in the dozen or so others I have read. Angry ghosts, sinister omens, strange goings-on. This is the "Amityville Horror" of Medeival Literature. It's a short, quick read (the saga itself is 140 pages, set with relatively large type.) Some passages are smooth-flowing, very intense page-turners, and some sections seem choppy and confusing. I'll agree with another reviewer who said that the family relationships and intricate web of who's-fighting-who-for-what-reason are extremely hard to follow, especially in the first third of the story. The action is very violent; there's a lot of fighting for such a short saga. The main character, Snorri the Priest, is a mysterious enigma - he's intelligent, sly, and crafty. He plays "close to the vest" so nobody is ever quite sure what he's up to. Even the author is unsure of Snorri's motives.I have a few minor complaints with the editorial handling of this saga. The chapters have headings which tend to give away what happens. The introduction should have been an afterword, since it contained far too many spoilers which gave away all the surprises in the story. If you've read any sagas before, then I recommend skipping the intro and reading it AFTER you've read Eyrbyggja Saga. If you've never read any sagas, the first 4 pages of the intro will give you a bit of general background, but the rest of it is a plot synopsis and discussion of the saga in sections - best saved til afterwards, when it will be of more help in gaining closure and filling in some of the details of what you've read.

A great and interesting Saga that ells about generations of the early settlers of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in western Iceland. Many interesting questions came to mind reading this Saga about the travels and settlementsof the Icelandic vikings, i.e. did they travel and possibly settle as far south as in South America?

This is an intriguing and insightful book that looks into the early settlers of Iceland and how they lived.

this is one of the most unusual of the sagas, full of drama and characters, and as immediate and clear as if it were written yesterday. a profound and grateful salaam to herman palsson for translating so many of these wonderful medieval stories!
