WARNING: DON’T READ THIS REVIEW IF YOU DISLIKE SPOILERS!Nobody knows who Alice Michel was. The supposition is that her name was a pseudonym for one of the women who modelled for Degas’ sculptures during the last ten years of his life when he was in his seventies, and that the book is an autobiographical account (in which the model, in her mid-twenties, is called Pauline) of what it was like to work for him. During those years Degas was at the height of his fame, stupendously rich, and known for his bon mots. The 58 page-long text, which was originally published in two instalments in the Mercure de France in 1919, eighteen months after Degas’ death, gives a most unflattering picture of the man, though some of his character traits were presumably already known to had had dealings with him: his solitary nature, his gruff manner of speech, his conservatism, his aristocratic disdain for the poor, and his virulent antisemitism. They are, however, unlikely to have known the way he behaved towards his model (and towards his housekeeper); how bad-tempered he often was (though there were days when he was in good humour); how his eye-sight was failing, so that he had to turn from painting to sculpture; how he would work on a statuette for months before abandoning it, not quite finished, to resume work on it at a later stage (only one had ever been exhibited in his life-time); how he always went in for the most stressful poses; how he disliked models talking about or showing any interest in art; how his bladder troubled him; how the fear of death haunted him; how cold his studio was, and how dirty because he forbade his housekeeper to clean it up properly; how he hated spending money on anything except paintings; how repetitive he was, and how foul-mouthed he could be; how he would have fired her if he had known that another artist for whom she posed was a Jew.Pauline’s own attitude towards Degas is interesting: she often feels sorry for the old man, comforts him when he feels sorry for himself. Though she is not afraid of him, she wants to keep her job and knows how to avoid saying things that would anger him. She seems to me rather a nice person, and, though she paints this rather unflattering picture of him, it is free of malice and really rather affectionate –even though he eventually dropped her, without explanations, for other models, and she admits feeling bitter about that.
