I've been a Doors fan since I was a kid. If you love their music and want to get some insightful stories about the band and how they got started then this is a great book. I've seen Ray Manzerek interviewed many times so I thought his writing style was very similar to how he talked and naturally expressed himself. I think some of the things that other reviewers got snarky about are very minor. There is a bit of sparkle dust in his rhetoric but he is not only a product of those times but a key driver of some wonderful movements, I mean like who can't get behind peace or love? I hated the movie about the Doors but I was in awe of the performance by Kilmer. It does seem that the film went out of its way to present a very untrue version of Jim. So, Ray speaks directly to Oliver Stone in a couple of passages and lets fly his deep seated ire! Those were different times, and there wasn't really the vast array of help available for alcoholics or substance abusers in general. And the prevailing attitude was not to interfere or pass judgement... But it was interesting that the band did stage an actual intervention and Jim agreed that he knew he had a drinking problem that was destroying his health. Ray often mentioned he viewed Jim as having a second persona when he was drunk "Jimbo" and I guess you can hear that in many of the live recordings. I think it was interesting that Jim also met creatively with the band but hung out with other people and got wasted. The real truth of Jim's death was revealed by the estate of Jim's girlfriend after the publication of this book. He was given a hot dose of heroin by a Paris dealer who didn't respond well to "Jimbo"... In the end I think Jim's plan was to wean himself off of alcohol and re-emerge on a different more clean high than alcohol, but he maybe didn't consider the dangers of trading one addiction for another. Jim had many plans with the band and beyond: film, poetry, acting etc. I think Ray above all was best at talking about the inspirations and foundations of many of the Doors' songs and albums. Ray was a musical genius that helped transcribe into music the poetry and often cinematic images that dwelled in the creative mind of Jim Morrison. If anything this book underscores the music and does not overly dwell on Jim's tragic death. I think Ray always celebrated the music and friendship that made one year last much longer than five.

The author spends the first half of the book detailing his childhood and college years in Chicago, so the title (My Life With the Doors) is a little misleading. He also gets a little too caught up in the imagery of the muse (in its various manifestations). That being said, from the time Jim and Ray bump into each other on the beach and share future song lyrics, I was hooked. The Doors were my favorite band and were only supplanted by the Moody Blues when I was freshman in college (1970-71). Both, along with The Who, rate high in my book.Ray shows exceptional perception in his depiction of Jim as a dead man walking. Something inside Jim longed to destroy both the success of The Doors and ultimately himself. Had Ray been older (about 25 years) when all this was going on, as he states in the book, he might have had some idea how to try and guide Jim away from his alter-ego ("Jimbo") and away from self destruction. Still, of course, it was Jim's life and no one was going to tell him what to do. Sad story, really. Immensely talented individuals whose sum was greater than the parts.

From the opening lines Ray’s autobiography is imbued with a personal touch which contrasts Mick Wall’s cynicism. The prose is livelier, more intellectual and well crafted. Ray’s melodramatic style, turns of phrase and references to the 60’s evoke an authentic account of this revolutionary time. Ray brings Chicago to life, where he grew up, painting a portrait of the 1950’s street scene. He makes reference to blues influences that partly shaped The Doors’ music and discusses music elements in a way non-musicians can relate to. With the master of a story teller and scholar, Ray draws in an audience far greater than Doors’ Fans. He shines a light on the group’s artistic background, education and cultural influences, which were a step away from the poppy world of The Beatles. No group had even done what The Doors were doing. Furthermore he defends his friend Jim Morrison without whitewashing him. Jim was more maligned than a scourge some accused him of being and humble despite fame.Ray acknowledges that along with the band’s fame they ‘entered the gates of Babylon.’ However, songs such as, Strange Days, gave voice to non-conformists, the art world, avant-gardes and those who didn’t fit mainstream society. Educated, literary and well-read, Ray and Jim are evocative of artists like Scott Fitzgerald. For example, they were thrown out of Whiskey-a-Go-Go, after Morrison sang, The End. One of the proprietors ‘went ballistic’ accusing Morrison, and The Doors as base and immoral. Ironically the song was a tribute to Oedipus Rex where Morrison’s lyrics make the political point that American fascism is just as barbaric and crude as Ancient Greek society. Today some can relate to the triumph of the right with its neo-liberal rot.The Doors shone a light on American authoritarianism and the expectation of compliance. Bill Siddons said, ‘They didn’t take out warrants until yesterday. If they arrested Jim at the gig there would have been a riot.’ The arrest and prosecution of Morrison was a beat up because he hadn’t actually done anything wrong, he simply represented the counter-culture. Ray rambles at times and inserts many esoteric references, which may put some readers off. Despite some short comings Light My Fire is a great read.

Ray Manzarek wrote a terrific memoir of his life in the Doors. Ray is dead now, and he shares many lively anecdotes with the reader about the band's creation and Jim Morrison you can't find anywhere. I've read several books on the Doors, and this one is a must read if youwant to be on the inside. The writing is great, and you won't be bored. Thanks Ray for sharing, and we'll miss you!Check his interviews on YouTube also. He was articulate and intelligent. A few hours with him would be a great way to spend your time.

I read this book for my Social Justice class and I had the honor of meeting the author (and having her sign my book).This book was insanely good. Our class had just read The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness prior to this and this book out shined it in comparison. The New Jim Crow left me dissatisfied at the end, offering me no real, clear, solution to the problem. This book, however, did and gave me hope for the future. Additionally, her writing style is incredible. It's so engaging and she really takes you on a journey. She has a way of making some big points in really subtle ways.As for meeting her, she is just as wonderful in person and she really is doing so much for prison reform and mass incarceration. She is working on so many new projects. Her optimism is inspiring

Wonderful book - well written, with the perfect duo of academic speak and personal voice. I have two major critiques - Baz openly states she has never been the victim of any major crimes, and I believe this completely obscures her vision of forgiveness, which is my second critique - Baz is a huge believer in victims of abuse forgiving their abusers, something that I fundamentally disagree with her on. Victims of abuse should never be made to feel that they have to forgive their abusers - anger and hatred are a completely normal and reasonable response to being attacked, abused, violated, etc. These are huge critiques that were very hard for me to move past for a while, as I feel that Baz otherizes survivors and victims of abuse who refuse to accept an apology from their abusers - but once I started to tune these words and sentiments out, I saw the incredible value in Baz's research and her interactions with folks in prisons around the world.

An inspiring read by one who has traveled the dark places in our world that are our prisons. Throughout the book, Ms. Dreisinger does illustrate that even in these dark places, the light of human ingenuity is alive and well and faith plays a major part of that. I volunteer with Our Children's Place at Coastal Horizons ([...]) as an Advisory Board member whose purpose is to educate the public on the invisible victims of crime, the children of those incarcerated. This book is a breath of fresh air and a clarion call for all of society to re-examine the wholesale warehousing of men and women. While some are indeed a threat to themselves and others, so many others languish within prison walls who are no real threat and other options must be sought.

Great story. I learned a lot. My city used it for their One Book, One Bakersfield event. I didn't feel it was a balanced story, because when you compare Norway to the United States, it's not the same culture or mix of population. I'd like to hear from some of the prison guards. There's sooo much $ in prisons, I can't imagine the whole thing being undone. One can only hope for reform, but money talks . . . very LOUD!

One of the best books on this topic! Bought it after listening it being read on the local radio (WRBH New Orleans). Beautiful writing style and a great insight into prison systems around the world. I follow the author on Twitter now for those interested- @bazdreisinger

With more attention than ever being paid to the problems of mass incarceration and the Prison Industrial Complex, this book provides a wonderful survey of how other countries around the world deal with the issues of punishment, rehabilitation and reentry into society after incarceration. It is an inspiring book, showing many different avenues and approaches to improving the systems of incarceration that we have in place in America.

Though I vacillated between questioning Dreisinger's methods and admiring her audacity, this book is a really important and accessible addition to the discussion of what a just society looks like.

Fasinating and thought provoking even with anti- American slant. Not fair to compare US to Norway.
