I am not much of a reader but have been a TS fan since I was in grade school and a serious fan of Dee himself. I bought his movie and his albums that came out in the 90's... I loved reading this and found it hard to put down. He writes like he talks so I was entertained from the first line. He is honest about everything including about his own character flaws...but if your a true fan you will love his flaws...as it's Dee ,...it's who he is... and he is a solid man, a warrior to be able to survive all the wins and losses in his music career. I never knew. How could we know.. Thanks for sharing your journey to the world.. Your so inspirational and a huge motivator... Sher
I was never a huge Twisted Sister fan, but grew up in the 80's and loved the whole metal scene. I bought this book hoping to get an insight to the whole era, and how the music industry worked back then. Dee delivers on that story, but also delves into many other facets of his personal life, family, relationships, band history, and gives a great glimpse into how driven he was in his quest for superstardom, and what boundaries he overstepped to get what he wanted. Not just about the salad days, either. The rise to fame, life at the top, and the downfall of a multi-platinum band is all revealed, warts and all. He's also not afraid to reveal his inner fears and weaknesses, and his candor is something that a lot of other autobiographical authors should take note of. If only every book was this honest. Very well written. You'll either come away hating him, or admire him for his honesty. I'm sure Dee wouldn't have it any other way. Get this book!!!
Unlike most of the other rock biographies I've read, this one focuses on the actual making of a band, and the ups and downs of the music industry. It's NOT the diary of a madman who spent his entire life getting drunk and high and being a rockstar. What this book DOES contain is introspective and intelligent stories told from a completely sober and sane perspective. I was, and still am a fan of Dee and T.S., and reading this book has solidified my allegiance as an original SMF!!
Very good! Dee writes an honest portrayal of himself, and is not afraid to admit his short-comings both musically and personally. I grew up on Twisted Sister and after the 80's moved on, I never game them another thought. I thought they were just another glam band with a few hits. Dee writes about how he got there and it a really fun ride. Not as zany as some of the other 80's hair metal books but that was because Dee chose to stay out of that most of the time. However he still has seen a lot and he shares it all.At the end, you realize he's a good dude, smart man who made the most of the short career in music and is still riding it today. He is also a family man and it shows. Great job Dee.
I gave this book five stars for a couple of reasons. First of all it is very detailed and well written. The second reason is my god Dee has overcome so many hurdles (careerwise) that he just deserves all the credit he can get! He has worked so hard and though he certainly has lots of ownership (as he admits to) in much of what happened there was a lot that was just bad luck. What an amazing story he shares.I was interested in reading this book because I knew he was best friends with Howard Stern (who I used to love -which has tampered a bit but I still like him) and was curious how that happened (just seemed like an unlikely pairing) and thought Dee's TV show was good. You could tell that he has a wonderful family life. I was fascinated that he had such a great homelife given his career choice - rock star - in particular in heavy metal! And that fact he seemed like he really was faithful and loved his wife. So all those things endeared him to me. The detail was a bit much for me but you definitely got your money's worth. I would have preferred that he finished out his lifestory and removed some of the detail....so when I got to the end I was "disappointed" in that that is what I was anxious to find out....how did he get back on his feet. But I guess you can't fault him for wanting to drag it out so you had to buy the second book. That would be my only "negative" or disappointing feedback. So this book essentially stops in the 90s.
I must admit I've never been a Twisted Sister fan but after hearing Dee on the radio talking about the book it sounded interesting. He is a good writer with the ability to connect to the reader. You find the stories easy to relate to and his self deprecating humor makes the reader empathize with him as a person. You really start to like Dee, whether you know anything about him or not.The most interesting part is the rise and fall of his band and how the record business works from that perspective.This is not the typical rock star book with a collection of "road stories" and self-aggrandizement. It's a true, honest biography and history of Dee's life, loves, triumphs, and tragedies. There are plenty of lessons to be learned and his insight into life is worth the price of the book. A really good read!
I love Dee because he is outspoken, a great entertainer, and hell of a songwriter. I loved this book because it was everything you'd expect to hear from Dee and a whole lot you wouldn't expect. This is a balls out, no-holds barred look into the life of Twisted Sister, and more importantly, the life of the man who is the life Twisted Sister, Dee Snider. Really, if you're a fan of the band, a musician who wants a look inside the creative life of a killer front man, or just interested in seeing what makes Dee tick, this is a great book for you. Very well written (by Dee himself, just ask and he'll tell you). Grab this one and enjoy.
