#2,014 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I had bought and read two other books by Maddie Dawson, both of which had an unusual plot and quirky characters. The dialogue was funny and I couldn't wait to see what came next. A slice of normal never was. The characters were whining, argumentative, manic and annoying. It took until chapter 28 to give hope of a love interest and that was never solidly resolved. I read novels for an escape and I like happy endings, but the only reason I finished this novel is I paid for it and I kept hoping it would get better. I'm not likely to buy another.

I really liked the book a lot. Compelling. Real characters. However...the end made me feel that the first person main character (Lily) learned absolutely nothing in the course of the story. And if you were to read her story about 1 to 6 months later, she would still be the doormat she is throughout the entire book. She never insists on boundaries that she sorely deserves. (I was waiting, but it never happened!) I've read other books by Maddie Dawson, and I would definitely recommend her as an author. But...don't read this book if you want a satisfying conclusion.

I enjoyed this book and read it with great interest and was surprised by the fact there is no real HEA or resolution or main character learning curve. Still, I enjoyed the writing and glimpse into the lives of believable characters with real "issues". The fact that nobody has learned much by the end was a bit annoying and surprising, but overall it was still a good read. There is no getting around the fact that the main character makes doormats look forceful, and the she doesn't change. In fact, by the last page she seems to have decided that she needs to forgive her sister, a sister who herself hadn't change a whit... That was a bit hard to swallow and I'm not sure then what the point of the story was. If it was that she should stop living on the sidelines of life and start living for real, she sort of learned it I guess but the reader is deprived of the satisfaction of knowing this because the books ends so very abruptly. There was a bit of romance involved but we know nothing about the male love interest except that he is a generic nice guy. He doesn't get a lot of time on the page so he feels a bit nebulous and the "HEA" isn't at all convincing.*Spoiler alert: the "villain" in this story is the heroine's sister and she "wins" -- she gets everything the heroine had and doesn't change her character, her attitude, or anything. This leaves one feeling a bit unsatisfied.*In all a good read but with some serious problems that many readers won't be able to overlook.

I was shocked when I read the last word... I thought I would get to wade in Lily’s life a little bit longer. The characters become your family and Maddie takes you away to a whole new world.Mplee

Trying to help everyone all the time....isn't always the right thing to do for yourself. We need to be there for ourselves, too. I guess a great phrase to use is....expect the unexpected. That's what made this an enjoyable read.

The book was okay , some unnecessary f bombs . Some amusing parts , all in all I enjoyed it..

Its so great to find a new author to enjoy.. this was my 2nd book by Maddie Dawson, enjoyed both! Easy, lightweight, feel-good!

Great summer read.

Review

“Krauss beautifully explains how our refusal to believe that there are unknowable cosmic truths has rewarded humanity with brilliantly precise answers to puzzles previously obscured by the fog of dogmatic assurance… The scope of this book is truly impressive." (Science Magazine)"The Greatest Story Ever Told—So Far ranges from Galileo to the LHC and beyond. It's accessible, illuminating, and surprising—an ideal guide for anyone interested in understanding our accidental universe." (Elizabeth Kolbert, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sixth Extinction)"As Bard of the Universe, physicist Lawrence Krauss may be uniquely qualified to give us the Greatest Story Ever Told — a masterful blend of history, modern physics, and cosmic perspective that empowers the reader to not only embrace our understanding of the universe, but also revel in what remains to be discovered." (Neil deGrasse Tyson, American Museum of Natural History)“College students, hippies, squares, christians, muslims, democrats, republicans, libertarians, theists, even atheists—all of us—sit around BS-ing like: 'So, how did all this, I mean everything, all of us, the whole universe, you know, man, everything, how did this all get here?' While we were doing that, Lawrence Krauss and people like him were doing the work to figure it out. Then Krauss wrote this great book about it. 'Wow, man, you mean, like we’re getting closer to really knowing? I guess we’ll have to back to talking about politics and sex.'” (Penn Jillette, author of Presto!)"In the span of a century, physics progressed from skepticism that atoms were real to equations so precise we can predict properties of subatomic particles to the tenth decimal place. Lawrence Krauss rightly places this achievement among the greatest of all stories, and his book—at once engaging, poetic and scholarly—tells the story with a scientist’s penetrating insight and a writer’s masterly craft." (Brian Greene, author of The Elegant Universe, and Director, Center for Theoretical Physics, Columbia University)"Unlike some very clever scientists, Lawrence Krauss is not content to bask on the Mount Olympus of modern physics.  A great educator as well as a great physicist, he wants to pull others up the rarefied heights to join him. But unlike some science educators, he doesn’t dumb down. In Einstein’s words, he makes it 'as simple as possible but no simpler.'" (Richard Dawkins, author of The Magic of Reality)"A rich, definitely not-dumbed-down history of physics... An admirable complement to the author's previous book and equally satisfying for those willing to read carefully.” (Kirkus)“This truly is the greatest story: how the universe arose, what it’s made of, how it works. Krauss is a warm and authoritative guide to what future generations will surely say is one of our species’ greatest accomplishments.” (Steven Pinker, Johnstone Professor of Psychology, Harvard University, and author of The Language Instinct and The Blank Slate)"Discovering the bedrock nature of physical reality ranks as one of humanity's greatest collective achievements. This book gives a fine account of the main ideas and how they emerged. Krauss is himself close to the field, and can offer insights into the personalities who have led the key advances. A practiced and skilled writer, he succeeds in making the physics 'as simple as possible but no simpler.' I don't know a better book on this subject." (Martin Rees, author of Just Six Numbers)"I loved the fight scenes and the sex scenes were excellent." (Eric Idle, comedian)

#76,963 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This is a history of modern physics that focuses on individuals and the roles they played in developing the models that now dominate our thinking. Science is seldom taught in this way in the classroom, since history has been ‘outgrown’, ‘superseded’ and so on, but the institutional development of science (particularly in a field of science dependent on enormously expensive instrumentation) is a crucial part of the story and the human element—from the arrogance of a Schwinger to the playfulness and intuitive genius of a Feynman—is not just interesting, it is also determinative, though sometimes in unpredictable and indirect ways. The story begins, more or less, with Galileo, then moves through Newton and the eighteenth century to Clerk Maxwell and beyond. Krauss has his own heroes here and I was delighted to see him enumerate them. It is fascinating to see the bases for the awarding of Nobel prizes and the personal dynamics between the recipients and the (unfairly) non-recipients.The story is always a provisional one. As Plato put it in the Timaeus, scientific explanations are ‘likely stories’. As George Steiner has reminded us, science’s strength as well as its reality is that it can be superseded. As he puts it, both Aristotle’s view of Oedipus and Freud’s view of Oedipus have value, but there is only one second law of thermodynamics. On the other hand, while science ‘applies’ and is grounded in reality in a way that the humanities are not, its dimensions and ‘laws’ change. Newton was seen as a god in the early eighteenth century but before that century was out his notions were being challenged by Lagrange and Laplace. Thus, the story that Krauss tells is a provisional one, a fact that actually adds drama to its telling, particularly when key mathematical constructs are based on the existence of particles that have not yet been actually observed. The bottom line is that the story is told very well, even though much of the material is extremely complex. One caveat with regard to the subtitle: potential readers should know that they are buying (or borrowing) a history of modern physics. This is a book about theoretical particle physics, quantum electrodynamics, and so on; it does not address the weighty question, ‘why are we here?’ How could it? In various asides Krauss makes it clear that he considers religion something that involves myth and superstition and that science has replaced metaphysics. He is certainly entitled to that position; it is a common one. On the other hand, as Hume reminded us, faith is not subject to rational critique, by definition. That is why they call it faith. Krauss uses biblical references as epigraphs (in a charming, not snarky way), but the notion that God works in mysterious ways is an important commonplace. It is also a questionable comment, given the fact that if there is a God it is highly unlikely that human observers are within any reasonable range of understanding His/Her ways, again, by definition. Meyer Abrams and others have commented on the right-angled nature of religious history. There is nothing; then there is everything. There is the fall; then there is the resurrection. God, as narrator/creator, likes to surprise us.Bottom line: the question ‘why are we here?’ is not really addressed in Professor Krauss’s book; whether it even could be addressed—beyond the musings of theologians in what Wittgenstein would call their ‘language games’—is another question altogether.

This is an outstanding book though it does have some annoyances.Krauss sets out to explain 420 years of physics: from the first description of inertia given by Galileo in the 17th Century to the Grand Unified Field theory of the late 20th Century. And do it in a short 300 pages. Be warned... at times your head will swim. But considering the complexity of the concepts he is describing, this is to be expected. Remember Einstein's dictum: "Make everything as simple as possible. But not simpler." Krauss hews to Einstein's advice perfectly. If you're coming to this book thinking you won't have to reread paragraphs, scratch your head, or really cogitate about what's being said, you're in for a rude awakening. But it's absolutely worth the effort. Krauss describes theory, experiment, and human accomplishment that is incredible. Can I say that I completely understood everything that he said? No. But his descriptions are clear enough that I understood most things, and vivid enough that I appreciated everything. And I loved the history and biography of the scientists behind the discoveries. There are some annoyances with this book. Chief among them is there are no equations! (Save for the venerable E=mc^2) It's all words. Newton's Second Law and Planck's Law are well-known even to high school physics students. Could he not have presented them simply to show how concisely physics explains the natural world? Maxwell's equations are beautiful in presentation and breathtaking in significance; Krauss should have shown them. I don't know Dirac's Equation, but I would have loved to have seen it. Krauss constantly refers to the underlying math of the concepts he's explaining. Would that I could have seen some of it, if only in an appendix. I also tired of Krauss's incessant references to the Nobel prizes and university credentials of the physics luminaries he describes. I guess this is something physicists appreciate. You need some prerequisites to appreciate Krauss: background (i.e., college) in physics and math, a desire to think about what you're reading, and excitement about physics. Finally, I did take up Krauss's challenge to answer the question: "How many piano tuners are there in Chicago? (p. 130)" The answer I came up with was 174. In Krauss's estimation, I did well. I wish I knew how many piano tuners there really are in Chicago to confirm my answer. This book is highly recommended for anyone in the fields of science, engineering, and math. It is recommended for everyone else. Though my guess is your appreciation of this book is directly proportional to your facility with science.

Looking to understand the ultimate nature of reality, but not into drugs? Try particle physics! And start with this book, which provides an excellent introduction to the subject. BTW, just want to say that if the Higgs field condensate transitions to a lower-energy state, well ... this universe was fun while it lasted. ;-)

Why should it be easy to understand the Universe we inhabit? Why should we assume the Universe and all its complexity should be simple enough to fit in one grasp of our eyes. It just doesn't. Yes, the book is complex. But this is no more a feature of the book than a feature of the Universe itself. And it also is one of the key aspects that makes this The Greatest Story Ever Told So Far, the fact that nothing (in its full meaning) was able to produce (by accident ?) galaxies, planets, life, and humans capable of going as far as postulating and finding the Higgs particle. This is Nature becoming conscious of Itself. Isn't it remarkable? And isn't it poetic? Hasn't the creativity of the human mind, subjected to the rigor of science, produced the most artistically impeccable accomplishments ever?So far.

Kraus has written a book that should be read by anyone who is half-way interested in learning why how we humans experience the world is comparable to the humans’ experience of the world in Plato’s famous Allegory of the Cave. The world of sub-atomic particles, that makes all life possible, is as fascinating as is it is complex. Unless one is already informed in the physics of current particle research (which I am certainly not), some of the language that Kraus uses is challenging (well, a LOT of the language!) but necessary. Anyone who reads this book will never think the same again about the incredible universe in which we all live.

Review

"Thinking Volleyball is a must-read. Coaches will benefit from Mike Hebert's years of experience and success in building programs at every level." Russ Rose-- Head Coach Penn State Women's Volleyball "Behind Coach Mike Hebert's well-crafted words shines his three-decade quest to help his teams become great problem solvers. If you want to improve your team, you need to read this book. "Karch Kiraly-- Three-Time Olympic Gold Medalist, U.S. Women's Head Volleyball Coach "In Thinking Volleyball, Mike Hebert draws on his vast experience with and knowledge of the game to provide valuable insights into the nuances of this profession. Not only is it a great read but, more importantly, it's a great resource for coaches at any level." Hugh McCutcheon-- Head Volleyball Coach University of Minnesota "Starting with the Introduction, you realize that Thinking Volleyball is a different type of book than what has been written before. The intricate weave between systems of play, program culture, and the writer's mastery of storytelling quickly bring the reader to the realization that there is nothing out there on the market like this book. Legendary coach Mike Hebert has the reader asking themselves critical questions right from the beginning of Chapter 1: Learning and Decision Making. The next chapter, Structuring and Running the Program, is packed full of ideas about topics such as team policy, program goals, and event management. In this chapter, Mike tells a great inspirational story about one of his former players and starting Olympic setter, Lindsey Berg. Over the next few chapters, the book takes a close look at different styles of play and the skills of international teams. In his discussion of the international game, Coach Hebert not only takes you on an exploration of the X's and O's of teams from around the world, but also makes observations of what he believes are the psychological principles of these teams. "The coach must decide to impose his will on the team. It is a matter of forcing players out of their comfort zone on a daily basis." This reminder to coaches is in his chapter on defense. He gets the reader to not only think about defensive technique and positioning principles, but also about reading the opposing team's offense and maximizing defensive effort. The next chapter, Drawing a Blueprint for Offense, takes an in-depth look at running an offense and the differences between an in-system offense, out-of-system offense, and counterattacking. The next two chapters, Promoting a Positive Gym Culture and Strengthening Team Trust are where I think this book separates itself from the many other books written on volleyball. As an observing and opposing coach, these are also the areas in which I thought Coach Hebert excelled with his championship-level teams. Amongst the many topics examined in these chapters are: getting teams to compete, working with and keeping injured players engaged, and developing a communication system. He writes, "The absolute most important enabler in team sportss is team-wide, unconditional trust. It is the lynch pin that holds a team together." Mike takes the reader into his team meetings and the activities he did with his teams in order to build team trust, including role playing, showing movie clips, and team readings. He also discusses how to promote development of positive self-talk and learned optimism, as well as how teams should deal with conflict. These two chapters are phenomenal, and they alone are worth the cost of the book. The book doesn't slow down one bit in the last two chapters, Coaching the Match and Thinking Outside the Box. These chapters include a potpourri of tidbits that will get every coach thinking as the reader gets closer to the end. I absolutely loved this book. Thinking Volleyball is a book that every coach at every level should have on his or her bookshelf. Coach Hebert's storytelling will keep you engaged. His layered and full 360 degree look at our profession will certainly have you referring back to chapters as you continue your journey in this wonderful sport." Kelly Sheffield-- Head Volleyball Coach University of Wisconsin "Others that have written analysis have not come as close to the essence of coaching women's volleyball as Mike has in Thinking Volleyball. The chapters on gym culture and trust are remarkable. Unlike other volleyball coaching books of its kind, it digs far deeper, and comes very close to the heart of coaching excellence. For those who can soak in its essence, it will make a difference long into their futures." Walt Weaver-- MVI (Midwest Volleyball Instructor) Director, 4X National Champion Northern Lights Juniors

A Great Book for anyone interested in building a Team, which is way more than putting together six players, or teaching them how to pass, set and hit. There are many books about technique and drills, this is the first one I found that addresses questions as trust, chemistry, gym culture, reading the game. The author explains his process challenging the reader to find their own answers (as he did with his players). One of those books that gets immediately a special place in one's library, easy to grab, again and again. (I got the Kindle version, which is now full of highlights, but I'll probably get the paper one too. Such a keeper).

I may be a little partial in my rating of my book, as I am a huge Gopher volleyball fan and fan of Mike's coaching style. With that being said, this book is still a great one. Mike does a wonderful job of giving readers an insider's view of why he did what he did for a variety of different challenging coaching scenarios. I feel that I have a pretty solid knowledge of the sport to begin with, but Mike brought up aspects that I had never thought of. His brain is absolutely 100% wired for the sport of volleyball, and he simply pours out his knowledge - which spans decades - into this wonderful book. Coaches of all levels will find much to appreciate here, as will players and those who are simply looking to gain more knowledge of the sport. Strongly recommended!

Like Mike Hebert's first book this one is another winner. He's not afraid to take shots at a lot of sacred cows. It's not about teaching skills or running drills; it's about molding a bunch of players into a potent force and teaching them how to play the game. Superb book and an easy, fun read. I highly recommend it. VBNE1?

This book is excellent and explains why Mike is such an amazing coach. He treats players with respect while getting the best out of them as players and individuals. The book pertains to any teams whether in sports or in business. His flexibility for applying different techniques and being open to different styles of play also separates Mike from the pack. Whoever reads this will be able to apply it to coaching or playing and to sports or business. Great job Mike!Deek Smith III

Very insightful thus far! Lots of things that I have held in high regard as far as teaching the sport of volleyball.

This is a eloquent mix of stories and discussion that illustrate the attention, awareness and planning that can enable a coach to CREATE a great team. Other books put so much attention and discussion into the mechanics of playing a game, rather, this book does a wonderful job talking about the critical elements that make great teams! Such an important read for any coach!

Really an enjoyable read as I am familiar with the Author and many mentioned in the book. Found many items of discussion for my volleyball family. Am passing on the book to others to enjoy.

This is a timely book. It is written by an iconic coach who has been there from the start of the Title IX era, coached both genders and built successful programs. Highly readable, eminently useful for all levels and a must read for volleyball coaches who want to grow in this profession.

This is a hardcover book with a dust jacket. It contains almost 200 pages of full colour illustrations.Right at the front is a multi-fold page that unfolds into a small Dragon Ball poster with a thank you note from Akira Toriyama.Following on are illustrations from the weekly JUMP title covers as well as comic covers. Each is fully coloured and reproduced big. It really brings back memories of reading the comic, as well as anticipating weekly at the comic book store. It's really great again to marvel at the uniform ink strokes and character designs of Akira Toriyama.Every piece of work is annotated at the back of the book. Included is also the very unique sequential spine art for the comic, which at that time I thought was really cool. There are also mugshots of Akira Toriyama over the years, including photos and icons. An interview with Akira Toriyama is also included to give this book some depth. There's really nothing not to like about this book if you're a Dragon Ball fan.(More pictures are available on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

What I would expect!

I hava read the original manga, and this one thought still censored to some extent, its not as much, and the color makes everything look gorgeous, this is what Kai was trying to be in terms of pacing, this IS the definitive way to own the series!

Is a good book 👍🏼

I just read this one again in preparation for what I hope to be a full read of the Dragon Ball manga (all 42 volumes covering the Dragon Ball story as well as Dragon Ball Z) and it's just damn good fun. Dragon Ball is one of those universes like Star Wars, or LotR, that I just wanted to ditch my own life for and be a part of growing up. It's just a fun world. There are dinosaurs, but there are also futuristic capsules that pop out full size houses and motor bikes. There are flying clouds (that you may ride as long as you're pure of heart). There are staffs that can grow to a distance equal to the moon at Goku's whim. There are martial artists who can focus their dormant energy into a physical energy blast obliterating mountains. There are alien species that transform into giant monkey-monsters at the sight of a full moon. And that's just the first two volumes!Call it nostalgia but I love Dragon Ball, and if you can get your hands on the series I think you will too.

I loved the Dragon ball Z series and love how they put the manga's in this huge books. The company vizbig is putting a lot of manga content in this books. If you love a good read and haven't watch the dbz anime don't worry, reading it is as good.they also have the dragon ball series if you also haven't seen or read the begging of the story of Goku's adventure with his friends, they have them too.

This is another high quality release of the Dragonball Z manga in a format we haven't gotten before in the United States. Of course, this a refreshing change from the variety of repackaged editions marketed as "unedited" by Viz in an attempt to get us to reach into our wallets. Understandably, some of you are probably hesitant to buy this edition for a variety of reasons. However, I should let you know that those concerns are, for the most part, unfounded.Having just received this in the mail today, it's true that I haven't examined every panel with a magnifying glass to identify every minuscule imperfection. Were I do to so, I doubt I would find any regardless. The presentation of this release is great, and the colors are stunning. No matter how many times you've read the manga in its original form, you'll feel like a kid experiencing it for the first time.I highly recommend this volume and the one before it as an addition to your manga library. These releases are of the utmost quality and deserve high praise for the crisp coloring and (mostly) true translation from the original source.

Damaged. The box was damaged and so are the Volumes. They have stains on some pages look like coffee stains to be exact. I understand this is used however at that requesting price with damages like this, no not worth all the money. I truly Enjoy Akira Toriyama DBZ series but this used collection was also missing the poster inside. I mainly wanted the Volumes over everything else which I indeed got but lower the price when it substains damages such as tears and stains.

Wow, it was much better than I expected!Me and my girlfriend are fans of Dragonball Z, and were looking for the Dragonball Manga collection to collect. After some research (so you don't have to do it!) we found this one to be the best, and it delivered! Much bigger than I expected and the pages are thick enough and the art is high quality as well. It has a bendable cover but sturdy for sure, not flimsy. There's in total FIVE parts to this series, each containing 3 issues. Which is PERFECT in my opinion - doesn't take as much space. If you're looking to collect the mangas than this one is 100% the right start with - other issues tend to be smaller and more flimsy. Price (11-15 dollars) is excellent as well and worth it.
