Review

Pre-Publication Review: "This volume contains a remarkable collection of individually-authored chapters cutting a wide swathe across the field as it is currently constituted. What is noteworthy, aside from the wide angle of the snapshot of today's bioinformatics, something the editors promise to update in future editions, is the innovative and effective pedagogical emphasis apparent throughout. The editors set out to provide a resource for teaching bioinformatics to life science undergraduates, and this is reflected in the language, organization and mathematical restraint of the different chapters... It is highly suitable as a text or reference for bioinformatics courses at the graduate level, for biologists, medical students and computer scientists. Biological naïveté in thinking and writing plagues bioinformatics, and Pevzner and Shamir's Bioinformatics for Biologists offers a wonderful therapy for that condition as well as an effective palliative for life science students' math phobias." Professor David Sankoff, University of OttawaPre-Publication Review: "A serious and valuable effort to bring essential and much-needed training in the computational sciences to students of modern biology." Michael Waterman, University of Southern California"... a very well-written book that caters to the needs of a growing number of biology students who want to understand this important subject. Highly recommended." V. Mathura, Open University for Choice Magazine"This volume represents an excellent effort towards creating an interesting and useful introductory bioinformatics text. In its current form it may benefit computational scientists more than biologists, but has the potential to evolve into an invaluable resource for all bioinformaticists, independent of their primary field of study." y Dimitris Papamichail, University of Miami for SIGACT News

I bought this for my bioinformatics class and I love it. In addition to the book there are slides online that provide supplementary information for each chapter which is great. This has made bioinformatics much more simple than I expected it to be. Each chapter can be read alone which makes the book versatile and great for a variety of classes. Even complicated ideas are presented in an easy to understand fashion, so people without a math or computer science background can understand the problem (even if they wouldn't know how to solve it without the help of the book). I highly recommend this book for any biologists (or CS ppl) who want to learn more about bioinformatics.

If you want a general panorama of what bioinformatics is about you should read this bookHowever it is not a practical one

The first book that tries to uncover computational ideas behind modern bioinformatics. I see no shortage of books (or should I say manuals?) that treat me as a dummy and do not even try to explain what is under the hood of all these bioinformatics algorithms. After reading this book I finally understood how NGS fragment assemblers work and how genetic fingerprinting is done.

Review

"Housman’s singular vision seized hold of the English imagination, inspiring not just a literary following but a generation of composers, like George Butterworth and Ralph Vaughan Williams, who sought to do musically what Housman had done with verse: to create a new and authentically English kind of song."—New Yorker

I am a consumer of the written word, not a writer, but I have a college degree and I cannot understand why Houseman's work is looked down upon by professional "critics." Maybe they have never lived in a gorgeous countryside with all the beauty and struggle that occurs there for every living thing, from the insects in the pasture, the blade of grass reaching for the sunlight, to the grazing animals, the bird life and the bending backs of the humans tending the fields and woods.

Very poor print. Poems share the same pages, as another reviewer said, which makes them start at awkward parts of the page and will break the flow. Low res image on the front cover. The book itself is comically large, like the size something a children's book would be printed on, but the print itself belongs on a book half the size, leaving a majority of the page blank. Not sure if the hardcover is any better, but I cannot suggest the paperback.

I recently purchased and read "Out of Africa" after my wife and I saw the movie again on television one evening. The poem that Meryl Streep read at Finch-Hatton's grave in the movie was very touching. Also, near the end of the movie when Karen Blixen is leaving Africa, the men at the club stand her a drink. Her toast, "rose lipped maidens, light foot lads' prompted me to look for the source of the quote. In doing so I found "A Shropshire Lad" which contain both poems. I have been a poetry lover since I was a school boy, and my parents, especially my father, liked poetry. I still read and re read poems and, as my father would suggest, think about what is being said, what the writer is trying to convey in the poem. My dad used to regale us with recitations of the poems of Robert Service, such as "The Cremation of Sam McGee". I was amazed at how he remembered poems from his youth.A.E Housman's poems are, to me, touching and filled with emotion, and reminiscent of a time when literature was appreciated much more than today. I have not read the entire collection of poems in "A Shropshire Lad" yet. But I will. I save it for times when I want a little quiet time so I can sit and read and enjoy it. I keep it next to my easy chair for those times and look forward to making my way thorugh them all.GLM

You either love A.E. Housman or you don't. His verse is dark, filled with irony and sometimes painful to read, but if you can get past the mood it's also beautifully constructed and very human; which is why this edition of his seminal work is special. Beautifully bound in natural linen cloth by the Folio Society (London) and encased in a dark tan slip case, it's printed on substantial paper stock and incorporates a half dozen multi color illustrations by Patrick Procktor."A Shropshire Lad" was Housman's first collection, originally published in 1896, and generally considered to be his greatest work. Throughout his verse runs the competing themes of duality of spirit and ambiguity which reflects his own uncomfortable relationship with the world he lived in. Though not unique to poetry Houseman was the first to be universally identified with this thematic characterization and, in many ways is a precursor to the prose of 20th century American writers such as John Cheever. Housman was a man clearly troubled and expressing in verse what he could not in life. To truly appreciate and understand him is beyond a brief book review and I would urge you to pick up a copy of "Bloom's Poets, A.E. Housman" to compliment this slim volume.Underrated and somewhat unappreciated by those who found his demeanor challenging, Housman was caught in the murky middle between the Romantics and the coming literary giants of the 20th century. He deserves a second look and this volume is the perfect vehicle.

I adore this book of poems, and one of my most prized possessions is a very old, leather bound edition that I found in an antique store. That one is safely tucked away to prevent further deterioration, so a nice Dover Thrift version to carry around with me was just what the doctor ordered. If you're not a big poetry fan, this may be the right "starter" for you. Houseman's poems are simple yet thought-provoking, and they all strike me as hauntingly beautiful. This is my favorite book of poetry to just read straight through. Sometimes I read it all the way through at a sitting and other times I'll just read one or two and ponder a while. Houseman's themes of the transience of youth and the inevitability of death are easily relatable to all human beings, and his diction is so simple and direct that his meaning is usually clear. I recently ordered several of these to give out to my students (I teach high school) because the price is so unbelievably cheap. Briliant, beautiful poetry for $2! Need I say more?

The poems are all there and as beguiling as ever. The book itself is cheaply produced with very small print and thin paper. Had I known, I would have chosen a different edition. The experience of reading them in this poorly assembled format is not what I expected..

A classic. A quick read for those with little time. Beautifully written with gorgeous, vivid images. Filled with sympathy and love of his fellow man and nature. Writers don't write like this now. My father was an English major. This book was dear to him.

Evocative, palpable imagery, feel the wind, the inestimable peace of England's countryside, while taking our sensibilities into the loss, the grief, of boys' in the foreign mud and racketing horror of war. Juxtaposed, this conflict of peace and war is transmitted by Mr. Houseman in deceptively simple verse that seems to amble with us going walkabout, over a stile, pushing through a stand of bluebells, but our minds woefully elsewhere. Lovely, kind, strong, memorable.

Heartfelt love story that is sweet, interesting, and written well. What I liked: I loved the heroine. She wasn't wildly stupid like you see in series' like this (i.e. doing things she shouldn't just to spite people) and she actually listens to the dangers going on around her. She doesn't let a new romance ruin her life or her friendships. It was refreshing to have a heroine do the right thing even if it was killing her, rather than do what was easy and create even more problems for herself and those around her. LOVED that about her. The romance was honest and pure and the characters really did work towards having a real relationship. Finally, how the author ended the book was downright adorable, and again done well. It left the story open for more to be written, but wasn't a cliffhanger. Props to the author for that, because lately all the books I've read have either had a poor ending, or they all end in cliffhangers. What I didn't like: The author does this build up to the climax of the book, and when you get there it falls kinda flat. I know the scene that was supposed to be *it* but it just felt like a battle before the war. Overall a minor complaint in my opinion for a well done and enjoyable book.

Wow, there were so many things I enjoyed about this book. It was exactly what I was looking for - a sweet, cute, romantic read. I read through it quickly because I just had to know what would happen to the characters. Speaking of characters, I have to say that I absolutely loved the character of Finn. I've never seen a character in YA fiction with Asperger's, and it was refreshing to read about such a character in a YA novel for once -- well done, AJ Messenger! I adored him from the moment he first appeared and many of his lines made me laugh out loud. Nice to have some diversity in the cast. The main character, Declan, was also very likeable. As someone who has struggled with anxiety and panic attacks in the past, I could definitely relate to her struggles. Again, nice to see characters with three dimensional problems and personalities. I also really liked all the parents in the book, especially Declan's relationship with her mom, which was very sweet. Finally I enjoyed the refreshing take on angels and energy and good vs evil. It made the story unique and fresh. The romance between Alexander and Declan felt real and not rushed or cheesy, and you can't help but root for them and their powerful love. Definitely recommend for fans of angel romances.

I didn't know what to expect when I started reading the "Look Inside" sample of this e-book, but found to my delight that Guardian is a surprisingly well-written story. After sampling the first couple chapters on Amazon, I ordered it for my Kindle. The author has a gift for bringing the reader right into the book, making you become an integrated part of the story and its characters--and, most importantly, caring what happens to them, which is always the sign of a good read. As I read chapter after chapter, unable to put the book down, I honestly felt as if I were there with Declan and Alexander -- and Liz and Finn. Luckily I am on vacation, so I was able to finish the book in one uninterrupted read -- it's one of those page turners that grabs you from the very beginning. I had to find out what happened. The author is a great tale-spinner, leaving the door open for more adventures of the characters in future books.I cried in some of the parts--they were so touching. I especially love Finn and his "gumball" honesty. He is one of my favorite characters in the book. I think anyone who reads this book is going to want to read the next one ... and the next ... and any other books by this author, who is definitely a mesmerizing story teller.I could feel the great love between Alexander and Declan as it was being described. Unlike some of the romance novels of today that feel somehow drily related as if by an observer, rather than felt and real to the core, the love between these characters touched my heart and made me feel the truth of their bond. It brought tears to my eyes to read--and to feel--the soul-to-soul connection and love that probably each of us longs for in our secret depths. It seems to me that only one who has experienced it could write that expressively about it. In this book the characters come to life. The conversations pop off the page, drawing the reader deeper into the story. Being able to write believable back-and-forth conversational flow is a gift, and this writer assuredly has that gift. The love story is combined perfectly with suspense, which gives it the captivating quality that keeps you dangling, wondering what in the world could possibly be coming next. It's all tied together by the author, who draws the threads tightly around the well-woven plot.I think this story would make a great movie. It would appeal not only to young adults--but to people of all ages who have a touch of the romantic in them--and, really, who doesn't? All in all, I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more from A. J. Messenger.

I stumbled across this series and realized I read this book years ago. I read so much I recalled only a few details and I am really looking forward to reading the other 3 books they were not available when I first readers book. I am so glad I that I find it! Loved the story, the characters, & being beautiful is from within throughout the book!

I first started to read this as something I downloaded on a whim. Soon it sucked me in and I found myself reading it two or three times a month. It reminds one that even the best fail, and even the weak come out on top sometimes. The length was long enough that you can actually spend a day or two reading it. My only downside was the way it skirted around the death of her father. I realize that there are other installments being added to the series, so I'm waiting for some real revelations on her grief or some hindsight that can add to the theme.

I would recommend this book to those that enjoy romance with a bit of the supernatural, also its rated PG so it's okay for young girls. I enjoyed very much seeing the main character fall in love and get the hot guy. I will say she is a bit immature for 18 and I got annoyed with her ignorance. But all in all I recommend it.

Loved the entire series. It sweeps you up and it makes you wish you were the girl in the story. Recommend.

Easy reading book. There is no bad language or inappropriate content. Enjoyed very much, and went right into the 2nd book. Now just waiting for the 3rd. Sometimes when you get series, they seem to be short. I think they could have made one book from the 2, but they got me hooked.

Life in Motion: An Unlikely Ballerina, by Misty Copeland

From Booklist

*Starred Review* If you’d asked Copeland, soloist for the American Ballet Theatre, when she was a young African American teenager about her vision of the future, she would probably have said that the only thing less likely than her writing a memoir was her becoming a world-class ballerina. But when a teacher encouraged 13-year-old Misty to take ballet at the Boys and Girls Club of Los Angeles, she discovered a hidden talent. Her natural flexibility and grace had her on pointe within two months, something other ballerinas work years to achieve. She was offered lead roles before finishing high school. Her professional success is impressive, but it’s not what makes her memoir such an unexpected page-turner. After all, we already know Copeland will overcome racial and socioeconomic bias to claim her spotlight. What keeps us reading is Copeland’s intelligent, fair, and warm voice. She speaks with candor about having to lose her luscious curves and cover herself with white makeup to look more acceptable on stage, but she never places blame on those who asked her to do so. Her story is an inspiration to anyone—man or woman, black or white—who has ever chased a dream against the odds, and the grace with which she triumphs is an example for us all. --Amber Peckham

Misty Copeland, star ballerina with the American Ballet Theatre, wants us to know that when she enters a stage, she thinks, “This is for all the little brown girls.” And rightfully so. She is the first Black ballerina to rise to this level of prominence in twenty years, and the first ever to star in The Firebird.I approached Copeland's story not as a fan of ballet, but as an avid reader of autobiographies and memoirs. When I rate this book a five-star read, I do so not for a niche audience, but for anyone who enjoys reading stories of personal struggle, triumph, and success.Copeland, who is racially mixed but identifies primarily as African-American, is famed for her work on the stage, but she can really write, too. I kept half an eye open to see if a byline or as-told-to would crop up somewhere. Copeland’s education was often disrupted by a chaotic childhood; her mother, a loving but apparently capricious individual who seems to have had terrible taste in men, had trouble staying in one place. Dramatic departures that took all of Misty’s “tribe” (her loving term for her siblings) in as co-conspirators, became a pattern, but they never seemed to leave the first “daddy” until Mama had a second one already waiting for them. How does a young woman whose life—and education—are tossed up and thrown down into increasingly tenuous situations , become this literate?I can only conclude that the label of “prodigy”, one she heard from an early age, did not apply solely to her dancing talent, but also to her intellect and capacity to pick up information quickly.Copeland begins her ballet training in California, in a working class neighborhood at the local Boys and Girls Club. Her ability is breathtaking, and a mentor arranges for her to receive further, more advanced training. At one critical juncture, Copeland’s mother pulls another rip-up-our-roots-and-leave number, and the family, now nearly destitute, lands in a motel room in a seedy area. There are six children and their parent (and boyfriend, at first) living in a single room, and Misty survives emotionally by compartmentalizing her life, fronting at school as if her home is the same as everyone else’s, avoiding prurient details, and doing the same, more or less, at her beloved ballet lessons. (Her mentor is covering some expenses for her, but she does not know this at the time; she thinks it is all free.) Misty ‘s sisters and brothers are increasingly finding other places to spend the night; the integrity of the family is unraveling. Misty survives those nights in the grungy motel by looking forward to school and above all, ballet, the following day. That is, until her mother tells her to quit. The mentor is having none of it. She confronts Misty’s mother and asks to bring Misty home with her instead. And with a poignant note of pain, Misty tells us, “She let me go.”Turns out, it isn’t so bad that way. Life in the middle class opens up new possibilities for her, once she is in Cindy’s condo with her husband and toddler. She learns which fork to use, how to set a good table, and watches ballet on video. She has nice clothes and a full belly. Her confidence increases. But visits back to the motel room to see the family are tense. She is perceived by her siblings and mother as arrogant. She has a new hairdo, and this sets off all sorts of bells and whistles. (Those of us who have been through foster parent training were told: never mess with the kid’s hair without checking with bio-mom first; for some reason, it is a button-pusher.)After years in the bosom of a new and loving family, in which she is included to the extent of having studio portraits of a family of four framed on the walls, herself, the two new (Caucasian, Jewish) parents, and the little brother, her mother decides to take her back. This reviewer has been there, and nearly wept at this juncture, though the author puts a professionally polished distance between the feelings she had then; those she had subsequently; and those she has now. Social workers will tell you that a parent who is more than ready to see a child go, a kid who is one more mouth to feed at least, and at times, maybe creates extra work or trouble, often sees their newly-acclimated offspring when they are successful and happy, and they suddenly want them back, as if they can pull a little piece of that success back to themselves. Maybe that’s what occurred here.Perhaps other, less subjective reviewers may feel differently, but I was surprised to see Cindy wiped out of the story, more or less, once Misty went back to live in the motel, and then not brought back except peripherally at the end. I get it; this is a ballet memoir, but it’s also an autobiography, and when she tells us that she had “been seeing” Cindy and her family off and on, I wondered what kind of interactions took place, and whether she felt turmoil at such times. One thing was sure, though: just as she took to ballet with remarkable speed and talent, she also took to Manhattan in a New York minute. Though it was expensive and hard to afford an apartment with any natural light or air, she hooked into the city, once invited to study, then perform there, and claimed it as her own.But culturally and economically, she felt the disparity between herself and other dancers:“Ballet has long been the province of the white and the wealthy. Our daily, toe-crushing exercises made pointe shoes as disposable as tissues, and they can cost as much as eighty dollars a pair. I came from a family that didn’t always have enough food to eat…[her peers] summered in Europe…their families had weekend homes.”At one point in her development as a ballerina, when a bigoted reviewer indicates that she doesn’t fit in with the white dancers, members of the Harlem cultural community ask her why she doesn’t come there to dance instead. Why does she put herself through it, they wonder. And in time, she is formally invited to jump ship and come on board the Harlem dance organization. But she has learned the negative lessons of her mother’s tendency to cut and run when adversity strikes, and she decides she will fight to maintain her position in the USA’s premier ballet company.International fame follows, along with the opportunity to work with the musician Prince. And there is more, but I should leave a thing or two for the reader to discover.I appreciated the author’s deft juggling of her personal story and her professional one, although of course they mesh in many places. There is never a point where the story drags or too much information (old grudges or love life details) make me want to skim.Like the ballet, the story is lean, trim, and full of joy, despite hardship. You should read it.

As s white male working toward my eighth decade, I am unlikely person to appreciate an African American woman's story of becoming a ballerina. However I found this book hard to put down. It is an engrossing read about someone discovering their talent and passion. I do appreciate ballet as an art and am delighted with Misty's courage and perseverance in pursuing excellence in this most demanding art form. I also admire her aspirations to make dance more available to a much wider audience. Misty has shaped her body into an instrument of beauty and art. Along the way she shaped her soul to be an inspiration to many.

I've always loved Classical Ballet; I feel it's the most beautiful form of dance there is. It's something my wife and I share. When I met I her she had a Mikhail Baryshnikov calendar on her wall. She danced when she was very young. She introduced me to Ballet and Artistic Gymnastics, both she had done in her youth. Sadly ended by injury. We both love to watch "So you think you can dance." as it brings some fantastic dancers to the stage and some of the wildest choreography I have ever seen. It brought us "Twitch"! This last season we were watching as usual and I noticed a guest judge I had never seen before and I asked my wife who it was. She asked me, "You don't know who that is?" I had no idea other that she looked very serious. She said "That's Misty Copeland; one of the best ballerina's there is anywhere." I shrugged my shoulders, "OK." Her critiques were so precise and on point; every toe point; every movement; every emotion. I was like, "This dancer knows her business." I was impressed and I believe she was on for two episodes. My wife still was asking me how could you not know who she is? One thing I did know; she knows her business. The above notes don't relate directly with her book but will. I'm married to a Latina and she told me that she wasn't always welcomed in allot of circles due to her not being white. Being white, I didn't fully get it because I wasn't raised that way. The statement "This is for the brown girls." should and probably relates to all women or men of color. Reading that made me sad but it should make every decent person sad. Her story was a great read. It was one of a young prodigy being pushed and pulled in so many directions at a young age that tore at her feelings so drastically that it it was painful to read in some places. So many families have to endure hardships and many talented people whether it's dance, acting, other sports or academia are kept from them because there is no one there to see the talent. Those are the ones who suffer. I'm glad the Boys and Girls club was there for her and she was discovered; what a waste it would have been to have never seen such talent. Thanks Misty for giving back to those who helped get you started. The book is very open and raw; she doesn't hold back on any of her life story. It's happy in many places and heartbreaking in others. It's a journey of a budding artist who tells her story almost from when she can remember to this year. She gives those in her life who helped her more than just credit; she showers them with praise. She admits to the reader her fears and how she overcame them (I love Krispy Kreme too). For so many to take to her, shows a spirit not found in many people no matter what race they are. In the end her family is her biggest love and that crowns the book for me. I hope my wife and I can see her dance live one day; that would be a truly wonderful experience. That recalls the dance of Firebird with stress fractures. Most athletes would be sidelined with that. It boggles the mind how she did that.I'll check out Firebird when I get a chance. Thanks for a great experience.

Misty Copeland's life is an inspiring story for any young person! My young ballerina is a huge fan of hers but as a mother, I see her story as applicable to anyone. It's about not giving up, not listening to the nay-sayers, and truly paying attention only to that inner voice. Ms. Copeland has demonstrated tremendous perseverance and dealt with it gracefully. I recommend this book for any young person, male or female! Even more "mature" individuals who still want to learn how to embrace life with passion and fearlessness! Thank you Misty Copeland for publishing your story.

Pals' "Eight Theories" (originally "Seven Theories") is a great resource for both undergraduate and graduate students. I've used this text at both levels. People around me sometimes wonder what exactly I am doing studying comparative religion. I usually say, "I study theories of religion." Pals' book is exactly this- an overview of the major theories of religion (why it exists, why it came to be, what purpose it serves...).

This was a very interesting book that I bought for my Philosophy of Religion class. I did not like that class so much, but this book helped me get through most of my essays and it did teach me a lot on various religions and why they believe in what they believe in.

Had to buy this for a class. Turns out this is an interesting book that I'll be keeping on my shelf.

After reading “Eight Theories of Religion”, I’m left with the feeling that I am not qualified to review the book. Nevertheless, it filled a void that seems to accompany any attempt to study religion. I have quickly exhausted theology as redundant twaddle. Valid histories are hard to find that are not written by Christian apologists with evangelical agendas. That leaves the question: why religion in the first place? Why do people believe in imaginary beings and miracles? Why are people willing to kill and die for it. Why is history saturated with it? Hence, the need for a book like “Eight Theories of Religion.”ETR begs the question what do we mean by a “theory” of religion? Daniel L. Pals leaves the bulk of the answer to that question for the concluding sections of his book. Meanwhile, the individual chapters must serve as demonstrative examples of what is meant by theory. For the most part, the approaches are social and anthropological with possibly the exception of Freud. Pals admits that modern techniques of psychology, cognitive science, and evolutionary theories of human behavior are valid, but unfortunately they are not present in his book. All in all ETR is a very rewarding book, even if it does not fulfill my need for explanation and origins. I suppose many would say that what I am looking for doesn’t exist, but I believe that is does exist. Simply asking how religion functions and where it may have originated is not ultimately constructive. Nevertheless, I would not demote Pals’ text. It is quality work and well worth the effort.

text for school - was a good read

SOO USEFUL

I actually needed this book for my Introduction to Religion class but I'm sure I will keep it even after I am finished with the class. Pals breaks down the theories into their simpliest forms and makes them so easy to understand. He summaries each theorist's section with an analysis and a critique which makes the interpretation of the text that much easier. This is a wonderful book and I would suggest it to anyone looking for possible explanations of some of the world's most popular religions...

This book is really quite intriguing. You get 8 different perspectives on the origin of religion, how it is today, and what really makes it work. There are chapters on Freud, Marx, Mueller, Weber, Tylor, Frazer, and more. I quite enjoyed reading it and I kept it even after the class ended (as opposed to selling it back). I DO wish there was a Kindle version of it, because I absolutely hate the clutter of paper books now, but it does what it should :)

Demons are everywhere. But only Luca can see them. Having barely survived a torturous exorcism, he has since learned to keep his mouth shut about the creatures he sees lurking at the corners of his vision. When his father joins Pope Urban II on his crusade to take Jerusalem back, Luca defies his father to seek the church’s promise of divine forgiveness for crusaders. Once the journey begins, however, it becomes clear that the nature of Luca’s demons are not as simple as he previously thought. Coming into possession of a mysterious book of prophecy, and surrounded on all sides by devious relations, sinister clergymen, and terrifyingly powerful demons, Luca must avert disaster. This is a medieval crusader story by way of Game of Thrones. Your flawed protagonists find themselves set against devious and powerful opponents, the conflict more or less direct depending on the relative position of the baddie. Luca and Suzan, our teenaged protagonists, are nicely fleshed out and well written. The concept of the demons used in the book is original and interesting as well, and there is a definite sense of menace that pervades the book. But for all that, the book just couldn’t keep my interest. A lot happens in this book, and a story set against a major crusade has plenty of exciting things going on, but there just wasn’t much sense of excitement for me reading the book. Despite the sense of dread I mentioned earlier (a feeling like waiting for the other shoe to drop), I simply didn’t feel any suspense or tension as the plot moved along. So in sum, the historical details are great, the protagonists well written (though every other character is pared down to two dimensional sins), and the demonic aspects are interesting. But the book just never took off for me.An advance copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest reviewI really wanted to like but by the time I was about 1/4 of the way through it I was so bored and started skimming. From what I can tell I didn't miss much because most of the book is just them wandering through the desert. I mean I understand that that's what most of the Crusades was, a lot of wandering around interspersed with killing people, but with a book you need to do some kind of time skip or invent a new problem because it gets really boring really quickly. Also I think the characters were supposed to be like late-teens but they acted like pre-teens so I kept going 'who is letting these children do this' only to remember oh yeah they aren't actually children. The characters in general and even the romance angle was severely underdeveloped, which there is just really no excuse for in a book that is almost 400 pages long.I did like the concept that all of the fake religious relics actually had a demon attached to them, but then it seemed like it wasn't just religious relics it was literally any old thing that anyone had at all so I'm not sure if it was actually supposed to be a commentary on worshiping things that really have no value or not because it was never really expanded on except to say that hey there's a lot of demons around. Also we never really get any background on the book or just answers as to WHY for anything. I like the message that the Crusades were horrible and fueled by the greed of men and you know, not that God actually wanted them to kill all those people, but I felt like the plot wasn't fleshed out enough and it just couldn't hold my attention.

In the 11th century, in the time of the Crusades, the young Luca de Falconi is anything but ordinary. Born with the ability to see demons, Luca hides who he is and what he can do. When his father joins the Prince on the Crusades, Luca finds his way to the holy pilgrimage, not satisfied on staying behind to take care of their estate. Taking only a secret book written in a cryptic language that his father gave him, Luca embarks on a journey that will reveal secrets, corruption and evil lurking in the shadows. When a mysterious girl named Suzan joins him, he realises that he isn’t alone; Suzan has powers of her own. Together, they have to discover the secrets of the book and stop the unknown plan of demons as the crusaders make their way to Jerusalem to free it from the Saracens. This novel brings everything together perfectly: romance, adventure, loss, magic, change and history. The descriptions are incredibly written. From the vicious, violent confrontations to the harsh conditions of the Crusades through hot sand, burning sun and lack of water, they served as a reminder that even though we don’t talk about them any more, it was still one of the biggest bloody periods in history. The descriptions of the sights and ancient places are mesmerising and the way Jerusalem is portrayed is breathtaking. It’s definitely a place that I would like to visit for its rich history and architecture. The plot is complex, fast-paced and clues to understand the book of whispers are revealed in a good pace; not a single moment of boredom from this historical journey. The romance between the two main characters is beautiful and it complements the story-line perfectly. The way I interpreted it was, even in the darkest moments, there is always something good that should be kept and fought for.An amazing novel that I highly recommend! This review was originally published on NetGalley.
