About the Author

Donald L. Pavia earned his BS degree in chemistry from Reed College and his PhD in organic chemistry from Yale University. In 1970, he joined the faculty at Western Washington University as Assistant Professor and now holds the rank of Professor Emeritus. He is the coauthor of two organic laboratory books that include techniques and experiments: INTRODUCTION TO ORGANIC LABORATORY TECHNIQUES: A MICROSCALE APPROACH (Cengage Learning), and A SMALL SCALE APPROACH TO ORGANIC LABORATORY TECHNIQUES (Cengage Learning), as well as MICROSCALE AND MACROSCALE TECHNIQUES IN THE ORGANIC LABORATORY (Cengage Learning), which highlights techniques to be used with a faculty member's own experiments. The print quality of the illustrations is dreadful. This is very bad, because to understand spectra and illustrations one has to actually see them. I suppose they do this to avoid copying of the kindle book, so on one hand I can understand that, but on the other it makes the kindle book useless. I rented this after seeing the hardcopy, clearly the kindle book is nowhere near as clear as the original.I recommend to buy the hardcopy or get another book, the kindle book is not worth the high price.The book it self would be excellent.

Book is in good condition as promised. However, I really hate the lack of organisation and clarity in it. It's like all experiments and techniques are jumbled up. Very annoying to follow and create my lab notebook from.

I mean...I'm not sure how to review this book. It is a piece of incredible artistic work, only because it really allows you into Yoko Ono's thought process. It gives us a glimpse of how she viewed the world, her ideology and her quirkiness. Her creativity came through in every piece, it really gave me a clear idea how she worked and how she is an artist in every sense of the word. It is an intimate look into her works - music, art, poetry, film and exhibitionism. In every aspect of her life, her uniqueness shone. There were parts that probably went completely over my head, and others where I found myself pausing for a minute to reread and let it sink in.Although this is a book of instructions, I will openly admit that I barely followed any of the instructions given in this book. I think Yoko Ono might appreciate that I didn't, taking it as a sign of individualism, of assertiveness, maybe even rebellion? I don't know. I think I may be talking out of my ass - excuse the language. But that's the effect that Yoko Ono has on you, really.Some instructions were very simple: "Light a match and watch till it goes out"Others were interesting: "Carry a bag of peas. Leave a pea wherever you go."Others were impossible: "Fly."Some instructions were creative: "Painting to be slept on. Hang it after sleeping on it for more than 100 nights."And some were intimate: "Listen to each other's pulse by putting your ear on the other's stomach."Some instructions your mind couldn't help but follow: "Think that snow is falling. Think that snow is falling everywhere all the time. When you talk with a person, think that snow is falling between you and on the person. Stop conversing when you think the person is covered by snow."Then there were passages that were just beautiful thoughts:"It's sad that the air is the onlything we share.No matter how close we get to each other,there is always air between us.It's also nice that we share the air.No matter how far apart we are,the air links us."What beautiful poetry, and what a beautiful thought.Then there's humor and satire:"I wonder why men can get serious at all. They have this delicate long thing hanging outside their bodies, which goes up and down by its own will."A gem of a book, definitely worth keeping around.

I buy this book all the time. It's beautiful. it was recommended to me by a friend in Japan and I've had at least three copies. lovely.

Inspiring and thoughtful, this little book of instructions already has me thinking of exercises I can to to get my creativity going again. I'm only sorry I waited two years after putting this on my wish list to purchase it. I started following Yoko's Twitter feed, and she's pretty much doing the same thing there.If you love Fluxus, Dada, and Surrealism, you will love this book. Imaginative little gems range from the Imppossible ("Drill a hole in the sky...") to the Possible ("Draw a map to get lost.") to the Inspirational ("Listen to the sound of the earth turning."). All her words are aimed toward touching the creativity of the thinking person and igniting the imagination.If you don't get this book, you should read a bit about the Fluxus movement, Surrealism, and Dada before attempting it again. You do have to have a bit of background knowledge about art to understand why this is art and why it is important. If art doesn't make you think or feel, then it is not doing its job. (Even if it makes you angry that its called art--then it has succeeded in being art.)As others here have mentioned, Ms. Ono was a very well off and respected artist long before her association with John Lennon. Admittedly, I didn't really understand her work until I attended her retrospective at the SFMOMA a few years ago and was completely inspired. Her work has a way of opening the mind unlike any other artist. It is important when engaging with her art to not be mentally closed off. Not always easy! But you can do it!As a long time Beatles fan, I did originally hold some reservations about Ms. Ono, but the more I engaged with her work and learned about her, the more I have come to love and admire her. After all, how could I respect and admire John Lennon so much and not appreciate the person he loved so dearly and inspired his most beautiful work?

I had gotten away from this series because the stories just didn't grab me. I took a chance on this one due to the plethora of good reviews. I am glad I did. It may be the best one in the entire series. Fast-moving plot, a great "old meets new" theme (samurai and robots). A couple of plot holes were evident (they can crank out convincing Austin robots in a couple of days???) and still some of that annoying wisecracking spouted by the characters whilst being shot at by the bad guys. I would ding it a half star for that, but I have no problems tagging this one with 5 stars.

Another spectacular novel by Clive Cussler and Graham Brown. It is always fascinating how these authors weave the past and future together in a cohesive reading. You will not be able to put it down until the last page including the explanations.

With the news of the operation in the East China Sea, Kurt and Joe head that way.But Kurt and Joe may have finally met their match, for the operation in the ocean has now shifted to Japan, as more of the deposit may be located there. Legend has it that the deposit was used in part to make powerful swords used by Japanese shoguns centuries earlier. The story is heart-pounding and doesn't let up until the end. I'm a big fan of the Kurt Austin Series, and "The Rising Sea" is an excellent addition to the series. Highly recommended.

Why does it seem like the books end too soon! I do my best to wait patiently for new releases to come out and bam! I DEVOURED IT! The stories flow. The books allow you to become one with the characters. Now here I wait for the next release.

The Rising Sea is written like you are actually there. I love the way so much research goes into the book. It is sad to see our world going into direction of this future. Anybody that loves a fast pace book where you have no idea where it will take you.

THE RISING SEA is a great continuation of Clive Cussler. A hard boo to put down as are all his books. I feel as his writing improves with each release. I highly recommend getting all of his books and enjoying all of them. I can boot wait for the next release

To me, Cussler books are written to a formula that has proven successful for years. A world wide disaster of some sort, an evil villain, generally ultra rich looking for domination of some sort, a beautiful female to help along the way and the heros to save the world. Here again it is Austin and Zavala. This book follows the formula perfectly. As a reader, you suspend any thought of reality and just sit back and enjoy. Not art, but a good way to pass the time on a rainy day

This is not a legal text, nor is it comprehensive or complete. But it is entertaining & interesting reading, and touches on a variety of issues that you may not have previously considered. The book is respectful, not comical. I could hardly put it down. I learned about it in a review in Columbia University (alumni) magazine, which recommended it.

I didn't think a book on this subject would be interesting or humorous, but I was surprised. It made me aware that if I want to have any say in what happens to me after death, I'd better do something aboutr it.The humor was also enjoyable.

No original research. Short on adequate research in spite of bibliography of 17 pages. A totally disorganized regurgitation of others' writings. Better to read Iserson or Roach or Mitford or any of the others directly. A lot of stating the obvious--having sex with a corpse is unacceptable. Blatant errors, probably from copying others' errors. For example--"Without proper disposal, a corpse not only gives sensory offense, it poses some danger of contagion to the living." Not unless it was contagious prior to death. Or, in reference to the mummies in Guanajuato, Mexico," Residents disinterred dozens of such mummified bodies and displayed them as tourist attractions." No, they were disinterred when the families no longer paid the grave rent. Or, "When Kennedy's ashes were scattered from a naval ship at sea, the wind blew the remains back on board the vessel." The Catholic church is against scattering. The entire box was tossed into the sea which is why it was considered "burial at sea" and acceptable to the Catholic church. Or, "Metal remnants may be left among the ashes. These include gold or silver tooth fillings . . . " Nope! They vaporize, according to a U. of Minnesota study. And a niche is for cremated remains, not caskets. The blunders go on and on.

I am at a loss as to the previous reviewer's negativity. - this was a really good read - funny, interesting, at times compelling. I didn't read it as a textbook; I read it as the informative, interesting book that it is. I recommend it because this is a topic that is usually found in scholarly, dry tomes and rarely discussed in public. Yet it is a topic that certainly affects us in a myriad of ways, as the author adroitly points out, from providing medical hospitals with a most needed teaching tool, allowing researchers to advance their own forensic knowledge, and adding to our knowledge of history, to name just a few. It whetted my appetite and expanded my knowledge base AND was amusing. A really good read!!!

Seems to be a good 'English translation' though I'm no expert. I bought this book, wanting to learn what it was in fundamental Islamic teaching - The Quran - that the like of ISIS/ISIL and others are taking to 'extremes' or being 'fundamentalist' about. Yes it has its moments of fire and brimstone, but then so does the Holy Bible's Old Testament upon which The Quran is based. So what did I discover? - Frankly - that none of these guys have ever read the book for themselves! Just one quote: [God] Allah talking to Muhammad through The Angel Gabriel: "Those who believe The Book [Basically 'The Torah of The Old Testament] those who follow the Jewish faith, and the Sabians and the Christians, any who believe in Allah [God] and the Last Day, and work righteously, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve." Hello!!!

This is the Quran in plain easy to understand English. The only thing missing is the Tafsir and commentary of Islamic scholars to really understand the meaning of the text and the context of what is being discussed. It is a good start to understanding what is soon to be the worlds largest religion in the world. It is interesting that the Surah's are not in chronological order like the Bible but from largest to smallest the way Muhammad commanded it to be. The stories of the prophets are littered throughout the book and are very similar to the Bible besides a few details but missing many of the minor prophets of the Bible. But to really understand Islam you also need to read the Hadith which are quotations of the prophet Muhammad from his companions that were collected by Hadith scholars. These contain the major applications of Islam in daily life, like the proper way to eat, greet people, sleep, engage in trade, proper way to use the bathroom , etc.. An interesting aspect of Islam from other religions is that Islam has regulations and rulings for basically every action you do, even more specific rules and regulations than Talmudic Judaism in some ways, while most religions give only guiding principles. A very good introductory work.

If you truly want to know what The Holy Qur'an says stop listening to other people and read it yourself. Is Islam "the religion of peace"? Some say yes and some say no. Read it and form your own educated opinion.

I am Catholic and very content in my religious beliefs. I bought this to try and learn about other religions and this was a good copy as far as I can tell.

Abdullah Yusuf Ali's translation of the Qur'an is considered one of the best by region scholars.I teach religion at a community college and use this translation along with a scholarly annotated edition. I highly recommend it.

I downloaded the book because I read Dr. Malachi Z. York's books. He usually uses Yusuf Ali's English translation of the Quran. I am not a Muslim, nor do I believe in any religions. It's just for research.

I'm a old schooler. I like the Victorian English, which are closest to a human language. The curbed originality and the sincerity that shake my heart.Alas, the first few pages say this is an edited work. O well whatever. Nevertheless, 4 Stars for crunching on.
