I use this to advise others as to roof possibilities and necessary structure. These have come far since the one on Heidi's grandfather's house!

This book was presented with very clear information and I liked the way it was laid out. The photos were also excellent . Lisa Lee Benjamin has been a dedicated plant and soil specialist and world traveler always open to learning and leaving behind inovative new ideas for communities to easily incorporate into their lifestyles. She connects talented people with talented people as she moves forward. She is a true visionary.

There are two aspects of this book that make it stand out from others: firstly, the approach being heavily rooted in the arts with a primary focus on design; secondly, the absolute accessibility of the book for non-professionals. Those of us who are closet (meaning would-be) landscape architects and designers now have a point from which to leap when considering our own projects, even of not of a commercial dimension. A well recommended read in blossoming field.

Let me start off by saying the pictures and variety of green roofs in this book blew me away. Other green roof books I have read have a good deal of information but are limited on the variety of green roofs.This book is a polar opposite of those with its great imagery from green roofs all over the world. Throughout the book it is almost a who's who of green roofs. Which is made possible because every image has a credit that lets you know where it is in the world and who designed it.I found this very helpful in that if there was something that caught my eye, like the English garden planting on the top of Vancouver's Fairmont Waterfront Hotel, I could easily look up more about it.Another aspect of this book that sets it apart is the Q&A sections throughout the book with professionals in the industry. They answer the questions on everything from design to roof membranes. I found these sections to be a nice addition to the information contained in each chapter.In my review title I say it is for the none professionals as well. The reason I say this is because the authors write in an approachable way that makes the topic easy to understand. That along with great images anyone interested in green roofs can learn how they work, find someone to help build one, and dream of what they can do with their own roof.So what's in it for the professionals? There are no recipes for how to build a green roof but there is the process of how to design, create constructions documents and build a green roof. The pitfalls one could run into where pointed out clearly and the questions a professional should ask of his or her team where given.One example of this is the approach of designing a green roof as a part of a building. I thought I could look at it like any other garden design and then lay it over a roof. But the authors stop that line of reasoning and explain how a green roof is part of a building and there are many factors that have to be accounted for from load, to wind, to building performance, to outside views, to accessibility and drainage.These are just the layers of information that earn this book its title. A wonderful all around green roof book for the professional just getting into green roofs or for anyone else that has an interest. An easy 5 Stars.

I used this guide during a recent visit to Provence and found it useful, interesting and intelligent. In fact some of the chapters on the culture, history and lifestyle were worth reading in themselves. It provides lots of factual information about the sights and provides useful tips. However, is not a guide to restaurants or hotels so if this is what you are looking for then this book is not for you. Personally I prefer this as many guides just sound like advertising puffs when they describe restaurants and bars.Another plus point is that it does not talk down to the reader as if he or she is an idiot who needs a dumbed down explanation of everything as Lonely Plant and similar brands often do. Nor is it politically correct, thanks goodness.On the other hand, it could have been edited as much of the information is of dubious value. After all, not everything in Provence is as great as its admirers make out and many of the endless villages, towns and ports are basically not worth visiting. For example, on Bonnieux it says: ”The village was well known for its bread and you can find out about its history at the Musee de la Boulangerie… housed in a former bakery”. Another place is apparently worth visiting because villagers built a low wall in the 16th century to keep out the plague. Yawn, yawn!

A good guide to get an overview of Provence, France's most enticing region, with photos that will want to make you catch the next flight there. Limited information on accommodation and restaurants but I use Trip Advisor for that stuff.

Very good over view of Provence & the French Riviera without getting too deep. The photos and maps were very helpful.

This book was not very helpful for us. The book is broken up by region, with a few paragraphs for each that region and major cities. The major highlights are listed in the paragraph. At the end, they have a list of places to each and stay. We found that information was almost useless and just a list of places to eat. It was hard to use the book to decide on places to visit and/or eat. This book does cover a broad region so maybe we expected to much. We left it in the recycling bin upon our checkout from the hotel.

As long as i have been going to school i thought that ecology and evolutionary biology were scientific in origin. Through these assays i have found that this is not the case and far from it. Druids, orgies in nature, it almost seems like a fetish rather than science. Although it is interesting to find out how these ideas actually evolved into science.

This is a great collection of papers. Some of the papers included in this volume are not easily available online in the PDF format, nor are they available in too many libraries for loan, making this, in my opinion, a must-have for the serious ecology/evolution academic.You get a pretty good idea of the evolution [sic] of ecological thought thanks to the way the papers have been organized, where you can literally see concepts grow, develop, gain momentum, and then either get worshiped or completely rubbished.And the book really is well-organized. It is divided into several sections, peppered with insightful commentary that enhances the whole experience. What really makes this book such a pleasure to read, personally, is the emphasis in the first section of the book on old, descriptive ecological papers, which is a type of publication that (for better or for worse) seems to be completely missing from modern ecological discourse.I recommend this book to academic and armchair ecologists alike.

A historical perspective of one's field is invaluable. This book is a collection of papers that reveal the foundations of ecology. Seeing the train of thought that has led to our current understanding of the field will validate current trends in ecology, as well as provide a setting for new perspectives. This is a solid intro for anyone begining to study exercise metabolism or looking for a good review as what i purchased it for.

The book is written in an easy to follow format and illustrated clearly. It gives a thorough insight in all exercise metabolism aspects. I found it very useful as background for further application of nutrition strategies.

Smaller book and easier to read Compared to my A&P and exercise physiology Text books.

Very dark. This book uses retellings of an old crime against the two sisters compared with a new recent crime. Each retelling unveils a little more about the sick twisted earlier crime. There is so much broken in this book that it's a hard read. It almost makes you want to clean out your brain. Ms Slaughter is a talented writer, but after reading all of her published work, I wouldn't want to meet her. In spite of the ending, you end up feeling pretty nasty after finishing the book.This is probably more of a real world story, but I really liked the Will Trent and Grant County series much better. These prior series had flawed hero's and a sense of hope. I didn't get that at all from this book. Of all of Ms Slaughter's books, I think there is only one 'intimacy' scene that's not rape. This book has a graphic child rape. That is a very disturbing read.

I enjoy everything Karin Slaughter writes. I have to admit that I like the series novels (especially the Will Trent series) better than the stand alone books, but I haven't read one of her books that isn't good.This is a stand alone book. It takes place mostly in a small town about 2 hours from Atlanta. The book starts with events that happened 28 years ago and then jumps into the present. Several of the main characters are lawyers but it isn't really a legal thriller even though there is a really fun courtroom scene. One of the things I enjoyed about the book is that it isn't just about the present day case -- much of the book is about the events that happened in the past and how they are affecting the characters in the present and their relationships to each other. The characters were really well done, I could almost hear them bickering with each other out loud as I was reading. You will care about what happens to them.But it wouldn't be a Karin Slaughter book without a compelling mystery. I could not put it down and had no guesses what would happen so the ending came as a big surprise to me. And even if I had tried to guess, there were so many twists and turns I would have been wrong.This is a great beach read but also a great book to read any time and any place.

I am truly a Karin Slaughter fan, and I've read all the previous books. But this one was a real chore to read to the end. Although the characters were very good, the plot was sluggish. The sisters' dialogue practically put me to sleep at times. Yes, there were some thrilling parts, also some very redundant parts. All in all, it was a real disappointment after waiting so long for my preorder to arrive.

The Good Daughter, Karin Slaughter's new thriller, her nineteenth novel, is set in rural Georgia, like most of the Grant County and Will Trent novels which established her reputation. She was born there and now lives in Atlanta—and it shows. Slaughter's characters are clearly native to the area. They might live in one or another neighboring state, but nowhere else.Samantha and Charlotte Quinn are now in their early forties. Known as Sam and Charlie to family and friends, they're the daughters of Russell (Rusty) Quinn, a criminal defense lawyer who has gained the enmity of nearly everyone who lives in the region. He has defended murderers and rapists, often successfully, and frequently receives death threats as a consequence. ("There was not one low-life alleged criminal in Pikeville, Georgia, that Rusty Quinn would not represent.") Both Sam and Charlie are also lawyers. Sam is a hugely successful patent attorney in New York; Charlie defends children.Twenty-eight years ago, their mother, Harriet ("Gamma") Quinn, was murdered in the kitchen of their home by two young local men as her daughters looked on. Fifteen-year-old Sam was shot in the head and buried alive. Twelve-year-old Charlie escaped by running through the woods adjoining their farm. The action in The Good Daughter alternates between the murder scene and the present day and shifts perspective from one daughter to the other as well as other characters. Karin Slaughter is without doubt one of today's most talented and accomplished thriller authors. I rush to buy every new thriller she writes.The three women characters central to the plot in this new thriller are all brilliant. The mother, "Harriet Quinn wasn't called Gamma out of a precocious child's inability to pronounce the word 'Mama,' but because she held two doctorates, one in physics and one in something equally brainy that Samantha could never remember but, if she had to guess, had something to do with gamma rays." Sam has inherited her mother's smarts: at forty-four, she's about to become a named partner at one of the world's leading firms of patent attorneys. Charlie, who is much closer to her father, is only a little less intelligent.

The beginning of this book gets you interested with a brutal murder. From then on, it is so boring I could hardly stand to finish it. But since I paid for it, I forced myself through. Several things finally get explained in the last chapters, but for the most part, it talks and talks about "feelings" and thoughts, but goes nowhere. I hated it. If I could give it less stars, I would. I have read most of Karen Slaughter's books and liked all until now.

I actually could not finish this book, which is highly unusual for me. I have only failed to finish reading three books in my life and this was one. I guess I just could not get over the premise of the book - that an entire town, county and state police force was evil and corrupt and incompetent, and that the only "heroes" were the father/daughter defense attorneys who represent the accused. I could have finished a book with a more balanced narrative, because I am not naive enough to think that there isn't corruption in many institutions, but there was no room the first 25% of this book for reality. I just wanted to be sure that anyone who reads the synopsis of this book on Amazon has a clearer picture of what the book is about. Don't rely on the Amazon description, as it is very misleading.
