About the Author

Mike Mignola's fascination with ghosts and monsters began at an early age; reading Dracula at age twelve introduced him to Victorian literature and folklore, from which he has never recovered. Starting in 1982 as a bad inker for Marvel Comics, he swiftly evolved into a not-so-bad artist. By the late 1980s, he had begun to develop his own unique graphic style, with mainstream projects like Cosmic Odyssey and Batman: Gotham by Gaslight. Along the way he worked on Francis Ford Coppola's film Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), was a production designer for Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), and was the visual consultant to director Guillermo del Toro on Blade II (2002), Hellboy (2004), and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008), and the upcoming Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen. After reading "A Plague of Frogs" series several years ago I lost sight of this storyline. Mignola has revived it in bloody, violent fury and added plenty of twists and turn to keep it thoroughly riveting despite the absence of his seminal main character, Hellboy himself! At the 3rd volume I can hardly wait for the final installment. One thing I didn't take into consideration concerning this series was the development of non-primary characters of the BPRD. Amidst the chaos, there's even pause to reflect on the emotional toll the 'war' takes on those involved. This is a truly entertaining series that offers everything you would want and more from its genre.

Dark Horse’s hardcovers & library editions are beautiful & just a pleasure to hold & read. BPRD is just one of those stories that you have to pace yourself when your reading it or you’ll be done in a day.

The book itself is fantastic, as I have read all of Hell on Earth digitally. The issue here is that the book's spine was torn and pages are almost falling out as shown on the photos.

I’m sure the book is great but I can’t recommend the shipper. Right out the package the book was covered with black sticky stuff. I’ve heard a lot of good things about this book from classmates so I was excited to read it. Now I have to return it and wait for snotheron. Very disappointed that a new book came like this.

Ok. The book contained a good description of various maritime issues, but it was a little hit or miss on if the topic I needed to reference was actually covered.

I lived on Governor's Island while in high school. My dad was in the USCG. Seeing the images again in this book brought back a LOT of great memories. The artist had a great eye for capturing the moments just the way I remembered them.

I purchased the KINDLE FORMAT of this book, which provides less photos than the hardcover or DVD-ROM versions and is also less expensive. But the selection of photos in the Kindle format s excellent! The Live Model hardcovers, which I've purchased in the past, contain poses viewed from ALL angles. While that is a nice feature if you want to find your favorite angle of a given pose, you really do get far more poses than you can use and some angles are just unattractive and useless. The Kindle version gives you a good number of poses -- male, female, all body types and ethnicities, and all beautifully done -- with no more than one, two or three angles of a given pose. For me, the Kindle selection of photos is more than enough and well worth the price. The only DOWNSIDE I found to buying the Kindle version is that I can't make print copies of these poses for myself or my art students. That feature is available in the other formats only.

I am an art student who desperately was in need of a good pose reference book as I practice anatomy and this book and it's companion disk are the holy grail of pose reference books, I am definitely going to get more from this seller in the future. There is such a plethora of poses that a year later, I am still going through them all. The photo quality is dazzling and clear, perfect for people looking for references.

Models (both male & female) completely nude in various poses. No backgrounds or props. Just the human form in an all white room. Each pose is featured from several viewpoints. The included DVD is what sets this series of books apart from other pose studies. It has enough shots of each pose to effect a 360 degree view that can be rotated under your control.This is the 8th book published, so they are obviously doing something right!Also, the book & DVD are self-explanatory. It is not necessary to own the previous 7.

This series of books is a must have for any artist, the images are of a high quality and as always a great selection of poses. It can be hard to find poses that don't look contrived, this book delivers a wonderful array of both male and female figures. Probably the most important feature is the images used are royalty free so you don't have to worry about copyright issues. The book also contains a disc that contians all the images for you to print out as well on your home pc. I have quite a few of these books from this series this is just as good as the others!Paige

Although I hire models occasionally for my work..i can't always find good models with the body type I need for my work. This series of art models books is fantastic! I have every one and am always eager for the next one. The books come with a cd disc that enables you to see every pose in 360 andsome from different angles. Most poses are nude...but some include drapes or partial clothing, particularly in disrobing.This company, in their on line venue, actually takes suggestions for different poses and over time, I've seen my suggestions implemented.I find these books fantastic as a reference source!!

I definitely suggest this to anyone lookign to practice figure drawing but for whom they have limited access to live model sessions (as I do). Really nice and very well lit photographs.

I am a huge fan of this series! I get a lot of use out of the many many poses this book and its companion disc have to offer. Just absolutely brilliant idea to offer 360 degree pose views, wow! And I'm a shy artist with absolutely no extra studio space or bravery to hire a live model, so photos work just fine for me right now lol. I'm collecting as many of these books as I can get. Keep making them please!!!!!!!

As an artist, I can't always afford to have models when Im working on a project, but these books..the entire series, are great to use as reference. This particular one didn't disappoint at all as it has both dramatic and casual poses and they really help in creating the mood, or that feeling one usually gets when drawing from live models.

In the first major reassessment of the Ohio frontier period in more than fifty years, R. Douglas Hurt provides a sweeping narrative of the major military, social, economic, and political developments in the region from the arrival of the first Native American settlers to the end of the frontier period. He traces the settlement of the Shawnees, Delawares, and Wyandots among other Native American groups and discusses their culture and adaptation to white society. He also details the military expeditions of Arthur St. Clair, Josiah Harmar, Anthony Wayne, and William Henry Harrison during the bloody conflicts fought to determine which people would control the land north of the Ohio River. Hurt also traces the survey of the Seven Ranges and discusses the settlement of the Ohio Company's lands, the Western Reserve, the Miami Purchase, the Virginia Military Tract, and the French village of Gallipolis. The Ohio frontier also lured those seeking a religious haven. Although many frontier people - such as the Shakers, Quakers, and Zoarites - wanted little more than to believe as they pleased and to be left alone, strong Protestant and utopian sects made Ohio their home. This study also discusses the major political concerns of the territorial and early statehood periods, including the War of 1812 and the presidential elections of 1824 and 1828.

Super fast overview. Don’t expect it to go into great depth on anyone subject. There is a wonderful bibliographic essay at the back for sources to take one deeper.Yes it is a bit dry as most surveys are. The negative reviews need to understand what the book is intended as. In this role, it achieves, and is a good compliment to the rest of the series.For more, start with R. Carlyle Buley who received a Pulitzer for his Northwest Territory history.

For someone who thought she knew history, this book was a revelation . I certainly learned a lot about the history of the native Americans, but I also gained a basic understanding of what the life of the early settlers was like. My children have many ancestors who were in Ohio before 1830, so it is good to learn about some of the factors that affected their lives. Knowing which ancestors were where helped me realize that they would not all have faced exactly the same challenges, but that opportunities were there for all of them.I highly recommend this book for anyone who doesn't know about this important period in the life of not just Ohio but also the nation.

"The Ohio Frontier: Crucible of the Old Northwest" by R. Douglas Hurt and published in 1996 is part of the "History of the Trans-Appalachian Frontier" series from the Indiana University Press. As with the other books in this excellent regional history series, this one makes History wonderfully readable, understandable, interesting and often fascinating. It would never be a text in our schools - but it should be. It is REAL History, not a catalog of sterile dates and names and political poppycock. It is about Ohioans as REAL PEOPLE and presents the reader with many, many splendid and entertaining vignettes of Ohio life though the Frontier era. The author introduces the reader to many people from Ohio's History that the reader would like to just sit and visit with in person if that were possible. Anyone with an especial interest in the History of Ohio and the Northwest Territory will find this book an excellent place to start. And anyone who just enjoys reading History that is Human, and Real, will thoroughly enjoy this book. An added benefit is the extensive and excellent bibliography provided in the book. It will be of immense help to anyone - amateur or professional alike - who is seeking an avenue to explore Ohio History

This book offers a vital insight into the development of what would eventually become the greatest state in the Union. Ohio was the first portion of the Old Northwest Territories to be settled, and that would have significant consequences for the state's development. First, the state would become more republican than others northern states, and would also be free of agrarian taint associated with such a political philosophy in the founding era. Second, it would also ensure that a great deal of the politics within the state would be focused on localities, rather than the state capital. The state would develop into the land of small business and family farms because of the traditions associated with the decentralized nature of its development. This is a great history book, but not one I would suggest to everyone. More of a scholars work than one for a general audience. Still, very great.

In seeking background information to use in developing an early 1800s character for first person interpretation for our historical society, I happened upon this book in my sister's library. Although I have lived in Ohio for most of my life and am well-acquainted with its political history, I was lacking in details of home and farm life as well as specific information about the character and trials of the individuals and companies that first settled in the Ohio Country. I found a wealth of satisfying information in this book, all of which I've used to flesh out my character whose family moved into Ohio in 1802. As a member of the First Families of Ohio, I am happy to have found such an informative and readable book to increase my knowledge of my home state. I can now consult my own copy of the book purchased for my personal library through Amazon.com.

I bought this book because I had just finished reading a biography of Daniel Boone (who spent considerable time in southern Ohio) and I wanted to find out more about frontier life in the Northwest Territory. I found the book to be well written and very informative. I must confess that I'm a little biased because I grew up in a suburb of Toledo. My only disappointment was that I hoped for a little more coverage of the Great Black Swamp in northwest Ohio.

The book has exciting parts and boring parts. I learned a bit about the early Indian wars, the clash of cultures between the retreating Indians and the frontier settlers who wouldn't (couldn't?) leave them alone. The land speculation that helped bring settlers to Ohio, while not exciting, is important to understand. Details of daily life, farming and religion covered. Lists of early settlers may be of interest to their descendents, and to those who live in places named after them. I am disturbed somewhat at the sharp cutoff between the Ohio and Indiana border. After statehood they can be safely treated separately, However, as it covers the the territorial days, very little Indiana history creeps in (except for the founding of Fort Wayne). Overall, I'm glad I got and read the book. It is the best [er, only} book I've read on Early OH history and I recommend it.

I recently moved to Ohio. I live in a township that was founded in 1796. This book helped me understand the early history of Ohio from several perspectives.

My nieces have taken an interest in yoga like their Auntie and I wanted to find them a book that is age appropriate. This books really offers everything I'd want in beginner book of yoga for a "tween" girls. I wish there was a bit more step by step in there regarding the postures, but the book also discusses self-confidence, being kind to ourselves and others and the other practices of a well rounded yoga practice.

I purchased this book for my 9 year old niece & she loved it. She looked through it several times before her first yoga class, with myself & her Mom in tow. She loved the class and I believe the book helped her understand what would be happening. This isn't meant to be a be all end all yoga book but rather a very nicely done introduction.

I enjoyed reading this book after I started yoga as an adult. My sister's granddaughter loaned it to me. Easy and informative for any little yoga person.

I had read other books in this series and loved them so I'm buying as many titles as I can find. This book was easy to read and beautiful to look at and it's a wonderful addition to my children's library as well as useful even for me. I'm a beginning yogini and this book gave me a good, simple start.

I am an elementary teacher and I bought this book for my students. It never stays on the shelf for long. It is well loved with many dog-eared pages.

This book is an excellent one for teens and tweens who are brand-new to yoga. It gives a nice overview, though very high-level, as to what yoga is all about and weaves in quotes from real girls who have discovered the wonderful benefits of yoga. If you're interested in a complete physical practice, with details on the poses and modifications, this book is not the one for you. But it does give several small sequences that you can incorporate into each day that don't take up too much of your time.

I LOVE this book! The language is spot-on for girls--there's no "dumbing down" here, yet the core teachings of yoga aren't glossed over either. The package is tons of fun, with amazing, colourful illustrations of real girls and easy-to-follow instructions for each yoga pose. I highly recommend it--especially for girls who might want to begin a yoga practice but aren't sure they want to take a class with a "bunch of women."If you're a mom with a preteen / teenage daughter, it's a great way to learn about yoga together.
