While the rank beginner will feel a little intimidated by the author's level of accomplishment and use of multiple types of tools (band saw, power carver, traditional knives), that should not prevent them from getting this book. A careful reading yields so much helpful information that this should be required reading for carving in any field, not just fish, and not just for the advanced carver, either. The skills you can acquire by reading this book and applying the methods are imminently useful and well beyond most carving books.I first checked this book out of my library among an armful of other carving books. I pulled this one from the top of the stack and never even got to the others. Before it was due back I purchased one. Most carving books are pretty good and you can always pick up a tip or trick you didn't know, but this one is extraordinary for it's breadth of coverage. Basic, helpful, clear. The photography of the steps is synchronized carefully with the written text printed alongside it, so you never look back and forth between photo and text and say, "I don't get it! What am I supposed to do? That doesn't look like what's in the picture."The author's background in taxidermy has clearly served him well in carving, and his achievements in both fields have shaped him into an excellent teacher. Kudos, too, to the publisher and editors for a fine piece of work. The only flaw is that it's a solitary volume. I would recommend the author demonstrate his methods throughout the genres of woodcarving - figures, fowl, caricatures, relief, chip, and so on - perhaps in a series?

i thought i was getting the 2nd edition when i placed my order it showed the picture of the second edition and i got the first, Computer glitch maybe ? All and all it is a good book i just wish there were more color photos in it. If you are a wood carver wanting to do realistic trout or fish carving's i would say it's a good book to have. I also must say that while i did not get what i thought i was getting i am still happy about what i received

FANTASTIC book! If Carlo Maria Giulini interests you, don't hesitate to buy this book. I really didn't want it to end. A lot of times, conductor biographies become an exercise in, he did this work here and that work there, and played this work a total of X times in his career, etc. While there is some of that (appropriately), what the book does tremendously well is give a sense as to the "hows" and "whys" of Giulini's unique style and approach. It is a very well researched book, and provides a lot of insight into Giulini the person, not just Giulini the conductor. This is really well done and highly recommended.

Conductors as Karajan and Bernstein knew how to use publicity. Carlo Maria Giulini didn't care, but he was just as good a conductor, if not better. As a human being and a musician he was highly esteemed by those who worked with him. He well deserved this accurate biography.

Overall, the book is well written, if somewhat dry, and covers his life from early school days, the difficult war years and into his most famous collaborations, with LaScala, Covent Garden, CSO and other orchestras. There are some black & white photos from youth to old age. Opera buffs hoping to find any insights into his opera career will be disappointed. I find it odd, that from his opera days, there are only a few interviews listed. Come on, one of the greatest opera conductors and all the author could come up with is Lord Harewood & Sir John Tooley (Covent Garden). Franco Zeffirelli could have provided much insight into the famous Callas/Visconti Traviata at LaScala. As to singers, only Robert Tear & Carol Neblett are listed. What??? I would have liked to hear from some of the singers Giulini worked with on his now classic albums, including: "Don Carlos", EMI Classics (Domingo, Cabballe, Verrett & Milnes, most of whom are still around); "Marriage of Figaro", EMI Classics (Taddei, Schwarzkopf, Moffo, Cossotto, Wachter & Cappuccilli -- Cossotto could have been interviewed; the "Verdi Requium", EMI Classics (Ludwig, Schwarzkopf, Baker & Gedda -- Ludwig, Baker & Gedda who are still alive could have been interviewed; "Il Trovatore", Deutsche Grammophon (Domingo, Plowright, Fassbaender, Zancanaro, Nesterenko -- Plowright, Fassbaender & Zancanaro could have interviewed; & finally Verdi's "Falstaff" (Bruson, Ricciarelli, Nucci, Hendricks, Gonzalez, Valentini-Terrani, all of whom could have been interviewed). Also, Lady Valeri Solti could have interviewed for insights into Giulini's relationship with Solti during the CSO years. The illness of Giulini's wife, Marcella, is treated sensitively & confirms what we already knew -- that he was deeply devoted to her. The lack of a discography is puzzling, considering his fame as an opera & symphony conductor. It's particularly annoying, because in the Preface, the author states that when he heard of Giulini's death, he put on a recording of Giulini conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus in the "In Paradisum" from Faure's "Requiem" and cried. Well, it might have been nice for the rest of us to learn if that recording is available. Yes, it's on Amazon.com as are all the other albums listed in this review. There's so much other wonderful music omitted from the book that we'll have to wait for someone else to write a more complete view of his life & career. It's better to have the book than not to have it, but it's missing the heart of the man -- the opera man, one of the all time greatest. Boo, hiss, for not including a discography or a CD.

Having heard Maestro Giulini conduct the Chicago Symphony some time ago, I can tell you he was an amazing talent. He conducted a Schubert mass that was among the most memorable performances I've ever attended in my more than 50 years of listening and loving all kinds of music. Saler presents a nuanced portrait of the great conductor and one worthy of his remarkable ability to connect with audiences. Even if you've never heard Giulini make music (please sample his recordings), this is a unique insight into a master of the baton.

It's hard to beat Minnesota and Wisconsin for great big fiberglass fish and game deployed as roadside advertising, equally hard to outdo the Left Coast for imaginative commercial edifices. Unfortunately, the king-size kitsch, most of it built in the first half of the twentieth century, that Heimann showcases is vulnerable to changing patterns of development and humorless crusaders for good taste (back to your castle, Prince Charles!). Heimann shows the Pup, a hot dog stand in the shape of a giant, spotted mutt, in its pristine original form and as it looked in 1940, festooned with signage and an odd carbuncle on its snout. The visually arresting contrast says much about the mutation of commerce and commercial display over the decades. Although the book is mostly illustration, the accompanying text is vital and incisive. Anyone who has ever been dumbstruck by a giant cement statue of Paul Bunyan or a restaurant in the shape of a hat ought to love this album of outre architecture. Novelty architecture is fun! I fondly recall the now defunct Disneyland fast food restaurant called Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship and Restaurant--now I have to travel to Disneyland Paris to experience it. "California Crazy" doesn't feature these two theme park icons, but does have hundreds of photos and illustrations of buildings, statues and even automobiles and gives a brief history of this often crassly commercial architectural style. Called "California Crazy" because of the high concentration of novelty architecture in California, buildings that resemble something other than boxes or warehouses are found throughout the United States. Try locating examples of novelty architecture in your area.I volunteer at an Air Force museum near Ogden and one of the things I did with my edition of "California Crazy" was to bookmark the dozen pictures of aircraft-themed architecture. I left out the flying saucers--and I may have missed a few aviation references--but the B-17G bomber on page 152 perched atop the Bomber Service Station on Highway 99 (1947 photo) was noteworthy because the bomber's interior seemed to have public access--the B-17G wasn't mere decoration.It will take some effort finding buildings that aren't your standard box. Automobiles count--the famous Oscar Meyer Wienermobile is pictured in "California Crazy" but not the Batmobile.Have some fun! Buildings don't have to be boring.You can even design a dog house to resemble a dog--just don't be too surprised if that "big dog" terrifies your pooch.

I moved to San Francisco after seeing the doggie diners there. (One doggie head still exists near the Sf zoo.) if you might make a decision this way, you have found a sort of bible.

Bought this for a relative. This is an updated version of California Crazy. You get to see structures that you wouldn't necessarily see in todays day and age. For example, a hot dog stand that looks like a dog. This book gives more detailed information about the buildings than the predecessor. However, I think I prefer the photos in the original book better, as they're close ups and you can see more detail.

I remembered that I was kid to saw the dog building site at the front cover. It was location Washington Blvd and now it was gone. I really loved to see the historical sites!

I bought this book when it first came out in 1980 and I recently noticed that a new addition was available. Well worth getting too, more pages, extra subjects (cars for instance) updated bibliography and a sparkling new layout. Author Heimann feels that architectural historian David Gebhard's term 'Programatic' does not quite capture the flavor of these buildings, I propose calling them FUNTECTURE.A new chapter, not in the original book, is 'Current Condition' which has twenty-two photos, in color, of buildings now standing and they all look very smart and well cared for but wait till you see the photo on page 169, this shows the amazing headquarters of the Longaberger company in Newark, Ohio, famous for making baskets and that is exactly what the building looks like, seven stories high with two carrying handles reaching up to the sky...only in America! You can see and read about this lovely bit of whimsy on their website.You will really enjoy this book if you are a fan of roadside America, especially if you have lived in California and maybe remember some of the weird buildings that are no longer around.***FOR AN INSIDE LOOK click 'customer images' under the cover.

It was the Amazon "Customers who bought this item also bought..." section that led me to this book. In fact, it just kept "popping up." In reading the summary of the book's thesis, I was embarrassed that I had not already read it: it was published in 1977. Furthermore, and with much regret, I had never heard of Wendell Berry. He lives on a farm in Henry County, Kentucky, not that far from Louisville. He is a social critic, in the tradition of Vance Packard and Paul Goodman. While he certainly criticizes consumerism, as well as education, his primary focus is on agriculture. As he notes, in some 70 years, we went from having 60% of the population engaged in agriculture to less than 2%. And he asks one of my favorite questions: so what does everyone else actually do with their new-found time? His critique of current agricultural policies and practices is insightful and scathing; again and again there are original "bon mots": "And it is one of the miracles of science and hygiene that the germs that used to be in our food have been replaced by poisons."It was jarring to read: "Earth's numbers now stand at 3.6 billion, and could double in 35 years..." And, of course they have. So, how much worse are the other negative issues that have impacted agriculture. Certainly corporate power, and it narrow, "fundamentalist" approach to the "bottom line," which necessitate, and Berry has mastered the economic lingo, shoving the total costs "off the balance sheet," and they have become "externalities." So what if the management of the fertility of the land is not sustainable? Contour plowing and crop rotation have passed out of fashion. And someone else is required to clean up the poisons dumped into our water sources. And then, what of the true nutritional value of the food being produced, not to mention the taste? (When is the last time you ate a tasty plum?) Indeed, how America became fat.Berry devotes one chapter to debunking a futuristic farm model produced by South Dakota State University. Much is "under glass," there are control towers, and push buttons, and virtually no people. So, in addition to agriculture per se, the author is focuses on the way the education establishment has become such a willing handmaiden to the objectives of corporate power in agriculture. The author notes that the Morrill Act in the 19th century set out "Land-Grant" colleges to help the farmer, but a few "corporate grants" have had an amazing impact on the nature, and outcome of "academic research. As Berry says: "Professors might again become people of experience rather than experts. They might again be able to apply their learning to the small problems of ordinary people and to recommend means and methods not profitable to the suppliers of `purchased inputs.'" Or, in terms of a liberal arts education in general, the following Goodmanesque quote: "And the so-called humanities become a world of their own, a collection of `professional' sub-languages, complicated circuitries of abstruse interpretation, feckless exercises of sensibility...the specialist professor of one or another of the liberal arts, the custodian of an inheritance he has learned much about, but nothing from." Or, in terms of society as a whole: "Can we degrade all forms of essential work and yet expect arts and graces to flourish on weekend? And can we ignore all questions of value on the farm and yet have them answered affirmatively in the grocery store and the household?"Berry devotes another chapter to analyzing the The Odyssey, one of the West's first epic tales, and demonstrates it applicableness to modern agriculture. Again, like Goodman, he examines the very nature of work and contests the idea that if we manage to avoid all the "drudgery," for example, by having someone else cook all our meals, that we actually benefit. He identifies the helplessness so many of us feel in a "specialist" society. I can't say that I agree with all of Wendell's ideas. Although concerned about population growth, he seems to advocate bringing back the rhythm method, or even abstinence (gulp!) in sexual relations. And he sees considerable upside in returning to the use of plow horses (and in limited cases, there might be.)I truly regret having missed this book while the world's population was doubling. His critiques have been amazingly prescient. It remains an essential read. 5-stars, plus.

Thoughtfully critical of the social-economic systems in place in the U.S. in the 70's, but could not be more relevant today, as evey point he highlights seems to be even more prevalent today (2015) and every point he predicts as inevitable outcomes of the follies of our misguided short term gain approach, appears to have come true. What I particularly found intereseting is that he not only provided specific criticism, he also provides solutions. Now, I'm not sure I agree with everything he says in terms of solutions, but there's a lot to take away from this book. If you're looking for a different take on environmentalism that is very much about proper use of land, not just looking at nature as something to look at, where indeed sometimes that might be the case, but really it's about figuring out how use the land without ruining it (sustainable farming), then you are in store for a thought provoking read.

This could possibly be considered one of the great American books; the originality of thought and truly American perspective are very unique. It reads like Twain, but with a religious farmer's perspective, which is basically the threads of our current culture.

America is in the midst of an agricultural crisis; the crops that farms produce are reduced in quality, soil is eroding, and more and more small farms are being taken over by large mega-farms with the new “go big or go home” mentality that dominates the rural landscape. This issue is what Wendell Berry is responding to in his book, written in 1977. However, the book has aged well, as the problems with the American agricultural system persist to this day. In this book, Berry searches for the root of these agricultural problems, arriving at the broad conclusion that the problem is American culture as a whole, particularly its move towards specialization and loss of holistic living. This change has severed the average American’s relationship with the land that sustains them, and people need to rekindle that relationship to reverse the current destructive agricultural trends. One consistent theme of Berry’s search is America’s predilection towards specialization. People no longer develop multiple skills or talents; rather, they become experts in a certain field or trade, forgoing a holistic approach to their work. Instead, people train themselves to be more like small, easy to replace cogs in a larger machine, losing a rounded approach to life. Berry’s largest concern is that this trend has infiltrated agricultural practice, leading to the formation of what he calls “agribusiness,” which is agriculture that is concerned with making as much money as possible. These large agribusinesses are replacing the farmer of old, who had to be a nurturer, husbandman, and much more besides just someone who grew crops. This combination of traits is what allowed (and continues to allow some farmers) to grow the highest quality food possible, because they understood the relationships between the different aspects of farm life. This model is hard to come by nowadays, as the trend has shifted from the production of high quality food to producing a high quantity of food. Berry considers this ingrained culture a sort of “orthodoxy,” something almost dogmatic in nature; his advice to break this orthodoxy is to live “on the margins.” This particular advice to defy cultural norms recalls his famous poem Manifesto: The Mad Farmer Liberation Front, published only a few years before this book. The proposals Berry makes most certainly defy cultural norms, as he suggests a luddite-esque return to preindustrial agricultural practices similar to the one employed by the Amish. However, this shift is not the only thing Berry recommends; he also offers some seemingly more practical methods of shifting the paradigm. These include developing a healthy skepticism of specialists; a shift in governmental focus to protecting the small and weak from the great and powerful; a universal composting system that connects urban populations and the farmers that feed them; avoid monocultures, and facing the problem of carrying capacity on this earth. As a young environmentalist, I find Berry’s book and all of its criticisms quite compelling. The sheer number of topics he manages to discuss, covering fidelity in marriage and Peruvian mountain farmers in one book, also impresses me. Even though he examines a wide array of topics, Berry never loses the focus of his book and ties the subjects back to culture and its relationship with agriculture. The result is a book that discusses the overall cultural and agricultural problems in America that is relevant thirty-five years after its publication. That said, I find myself questioning how practical his overall suggestion of returning to preindustrial agricultural models is. With an exploding global population and unequal food distribution, it seems that such a drastic switch would not be feasible, and frankly irresponsible. I do think that Berry is right to point out the many flaws in our current method of agricultural production, particularly the issue of monocultures and agribusiness, but I think to reject over one-hundred years of technological innovation does not seem like a viable solution.The Unsettling of America is an important piece of writing that all environmentally minded people should read. Berry provides an excellent starting point for thinking about where culture and the environment intersect, as it occurs much more often than people might believe. Exploring the agricultural and environmental crises through a cultural lens is the only way we can ever hope to tackle such massive problems. Berry understands that, and articulates it well in this book.

Although this is a book telling Danny Gregory's story of his wife and their son Jack, it's also his story about what prompted Danny to teach himself to draw. If you're a seasoned artist, or just beginning to dabble, quickly run to your computer and order any of Danny Gregory's books. He is one of my favorite authors! He is so inspiring and sensitive. I took one of his online "Sketchbook Skool" classes and was immediately hooked. He's down to earth, humorous, and captures your heart with his life stories and his incredible way of urging anyone to draw, because it's really not about drawing, it's about seeing. Danny's books have helped me have fun drawing and painting things like my breakfast in the mornings, and if I'm really stumped as to what to draw, I've been known to take off my shoe and try to draw my foot. It's not perfect, it's fun! And, if you're looking for a perfect rendition of a subject or object, get out your camera and take a picture, but it won't be as much fun!

I liked it. I was drawn in by the story of why he went into drawing that I read in the preview (his wife getting into an accident) but I felt the book focused on the repetitive theme of how drawing helped him cope .... and that he recommends it. That's great buuuut I felt the story only hit the surface of what was going on. I wasn't expecting great literature but I felt there was so much missing, so many more questions about the accident, about everyday life after the accident. In the book, he said things changed after his wife's accident, they did things differently - well how did you do them differently?On the other hand, this is the first sketchbook I ever bought (although I have bought graphic novels before). Perhaps the focus is on the sketches. In which case, I'm not sure I'd've bought it. The sketches were nice, just not sure it would draw me in enough to make a purchase.

I bought this book as a present for my friend. I read this book many years ago and found it very moving and inspirational, thus, I began to draw/sketch my world around me as did this author. It totally changed how I saw the world and was a brave thing for me to do as I am a terrible drawer...it didn't matter...only Everyday Matters!

Very touching story about how his family unit was changed by his wife's unfortunate accident. His drawings/sketches are expressive and demonstrate a style that I really enjoy and will try to mimic on my own. I liked that this was not a "how-to" book, but still it visually shows a drawing style, from a simple doodle, to more completed drawings (with watercolor), how the reader could learn to draw. Love this little book!

It's not all the time we get to see a book which illustrates what the author is telling us in self study and learning. In this book I believewe are allowed this opportunity. A tragedy becomes something larger to those involved and everyone becomes something largerthan they might have expected through events. That is not to say we should hope for something "painful" to occur to truly bring outour character, our core being - from which we grow, learn and decide. In this case an event cause this. The result appears to have produced a catharsis of imagination and a eventual growth, a thightening of the family, and as a result the contents of this book.It and The Creative License... Are well worth the reading, viewing and trying.

I was not expecting anything when I started this book...frankly, I'm not sure I remember ordering it. In any event, the parallels between this graphic memoir and my own life make this book read more like an answered prayer than merely another memoir.I take that last part back. It's not just that the author's experiences mirror my own life that makes this book notable. Rather, it's that Gregory manages to capture his own HUMANITY...without resorting to irony or the manufactured self-deprecation that seems to plague the modern memoir that makes this book so notable. I mean, finally!, someone has managed to write an HONEST memoir, one that does not require an attorney's Release of the Facts as a prologue."Everyday Matters" reads like a private journal, without the pretention that comes when the author knows other folks'll be reading it. Gregory's sketches are likewise uninhibited and imperfect; together, the text and illustrations create a personal, intimate environment for the reader that is inviting and judgment-free; none of the "You shouldn't have looked (though I knew you would, so I gave you my best side)" business that is the meta-text of so many memoirs, but instead offers a reassuring, "Well, that's me, hair and all...what do you think?"A thoughtful, generous gift from Gregory to his readers.

Everything about this book, from its honesty to the strength in vulnerability, is gorgeous. This book is like a small paper friend, one that encourages you, gives you hope, makes you smile and gives you a quiet, full appreciation of the lives we have. I've read it so slowly because I want to savor it. Danny Gregory also gave me "permission" with this book to draw - scribble, doodle, scrawl - in my own journals. It's one of the books I keep close on my shelf and close to my heart.

Danny Gregory has a touching outlook on life. He has lived through some events that have led him to view life as a gift. It has led him to know that Every Day truly Matters. The drawings in the book are delightful, illustrate his insights, and provide inspiration to sketchers all over the world. This book provided me with a glimpse of an artist's motivation, ideas for my own sketchbook/journaling and food for the soul. It's well worth the read, and saving for perusing off and on as need arises for personal motivation.

Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond is an important book that I suspect will be referred to for many years in sociology classes across the nation. In this book, the author takes people into some of the poorest neighborhoods of America and what it means to be evicted.This book follows along with real people who live in the 'hood and what puts them in precarious financial situations so as to be dealing with unscrupulous landlords. Some of the tenants have problems with drugs, low paying jobs, a lack of child support, child delinquency, physical and mental disabilities and other similar social problems.As for the landlords, they are shown to be smarter than we think they are. They know who they can make the most money off of and they employ a variety of schemes to make money off of the poor. We also see how some tenants abuse the properties where they live, so landlords know that they are often taking a gamble when buying houses - even derelict properties - and renting them out to certain types of tenants. We also learn about how the government plays a role in all of this behavior.This is a well written book. There is strong language but it's the way that people speak, so it's not for show.Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for writing an honest review. I have been involved with low income housing in Milwaukee for over three decades as a landlord and as an attorney for landlords and tenants. I know the neighborhoods and characters in this book all too well. If you want insight into poor people’s lives as they struggle to keep a roof over their heads, you should buy this book. The other reviews are right about how gripping those stories are. But if you are a graduate of Trump University and think you’ll get some insight into how to make obscene profits by renting to the poor you’ll find anecdotes but no real verified research about the business of landlording. Most significantly, you will not learn the truth that bringing evictions totally destroyed the rental business of Sherrena, the leading landlord protagonist.Strangely, though Desmond interviewed 30 landlords he only focuses on two. One is Tobin, a mobile home park operator on Milwaukee’s south side, which is largely white and Hispanic. Tobin indeed makes a lot of money but that is because he does not have to maintain or repair 95% of the “dwellings” in his park. Tobin rents out a concrete slab with utility connections and the tenants buy or bring their own trailers and pay their own utilities. As owners they are responsible for the exterior and interior condition of their dwelling. Only 5% of the trailers are owned by the park and rented to tenants as a living unit. So Tobin is a landlord only in the sense that you might have a landlord this summer when you drive your Winnebago to a Jellystone Park and pay rent for the parking pad and utility hookups.Then we have Sherrena who with her husband runs about 18 buildings (mostly two-family flats) in the African-American neighborhoods on the north side of Milwaukee. In a chapter titled “The ‘Hood is Good” Desmond blithely accepts Sherrena’s boast that she has a net worth of $2 million and nets $10,000 a month in rental income. Desmond is honest in portraying the many difficulties Sherrena has in collecting rent from her struggling tenants but he doesn’t do the background research (available from local court records) about the many thousands of dollars in unpaid rents and damaged units which sort of cut into profits a little bit.As to her supposed net worth of $2 million, that averages out to $111,000 for each of these 18 ghetto properties - certainly far more than some of the real dumpy ones are worth – but the author does not research the amounts of the recorded mortgages against these properties (ranging between $64,000 and $119,200) which further greatly reduce the claimed net worth. That would have been revealed in the many foreclosures filed against Sherrena’s properties which started within a year after Desmond’s visit to Milwaukee.So when this book came out in 2016 the curious reader might want to know: if the ‘hood is good for the landlord how much better has it gotten since the author did his study in 2009? Research so far shows that not one of Sherrena’s properties remains in her ownership. Starting in 2010 many were bulldozed, went into city ownership via foreclosure for nonpayment of real estate taxes or today sit as haunting, blighted eyesores. A few were foreclosed by lenders, were fixed up and are under new ownership. Evictions by Sherrena ended in the year 2010. So did her non-existent profit. She joins many small-time under-capitalized landlords who have gone bust in Milwaukee and elsewhere since the Great Recession started in 2008 with the bursting of the housing bubble.Please note that I still give the book 4 stars. Its significant defects in reporting on the “profit” aspect of its subtitle are outweighed by the important and detailed research on the effects of eviction in creating and perpetuating poverty. A better and expanded housing voucher program for low income tenants is much needed. Landlords nationwide should join Matt Desmond’s call for its implementation.

"Evicted" is the story of eight families in Milwaukee, WI--six families struggling mightily to pay the rent on their increasingly crappy apartments, and two sets of landlords. The landlords are either a new breed of venture capitalists or merely slumlords, depending on your perspective. Since roughly 2000, rents have shot up while the properties have either stayed the same or declined, so that by 2013 about one out of every three poor families spent seventy percent of their income on housing. Think about that for a minute.As a result of this, poor families are always one crisis--really one unexpected expense--away from being evicted. I read it all the way through the endnotes, which are also quite interesting and provide some insights or background info. I really wanted to find out how all the families were doing today (the book takes place in 2008-2009) because I became attached to them and had come to care about them. Unfortunately the author doesn't tell you what became of them, although if I had to guess I'd say their lives continued on in more or less the same vein.A word on the swearing: this is a well written, professionally done sociological study. The author only uses swears when he's quoting one of the people he interviewed. If you were desperate, poor, depressed and angry, you, too might be given to curse words.If you enjoy sociological and/or cultural topics, if you care about equality in America, if you are interested in how grinding poverty affects families, pick this up. I learned a lot.

I bought this book for my son thinking that it would essentially just be cutting wavy lines and various shapes.I was pleasantly surprised to find that although there are cutting activities on every page, there are also lots of other skills involved. There is some counting, basic science (categorization of animals), some math, reasoning, shape recognition, and more. The activities get more challenging through the book, which is great. My son was so engaged by it that he got through the first 16 pages in one sitting-- that's HUGE for a 4-year-old.

My daughters preschool told me that we needed to work on ‘scissor skills’, so I bought this to help us overcome working those tricky scissors. The book is more than just cutting, it’s cutting and pasting, so you will need a glue stick. It’s a pretty short book, so once you get started, you will blow right through it. I wish there was a little more content to go with the cutting, but it’s a pretty simple book and the idea is really just to practice scissor skills, which it does pretty well.Couple things to note: this book is super colorful, which we loved. One of the best printed workbooks I’ve seen. Also comes with stickers which is motivating and super fun for the toddler set.

My daughter (4.5 years old in PreK) needed some extra practice with cutting, so I looked for some workbooks that would possibly help her and keep her interest. This particular workbook was the MOST fun to her because of the various activities on each page. My only criticism, and reason for the four star review, is that for the actual activities could be more challenging for the intended age group. I’ve included photo to show a couple of sample pages, and you can see that it’s not too difficult to determine which person gets which hat. However, the real skill being practiced is trying to cut out each individual square from the page.Since most of the shapes to be cut out are either squares or rectangles, I challenged my daughter to try and cut the pictures out themselves. They weren’t always cut perfectly, but it was a good challenge and way to mix up the activities.I would definitely recommend this workbook to anyone looking for something to help with simple cutting and pasting skills that are fun for kids. It certainly held my daughter’s attention for a good half an hour or so at a time.

Good variety of activities - kids cut, glue the back and stick on based on the activity on the pages (fill in missing puzzle pieces, match rhyming words, match count of objects). I'm buying more for my other kids. At the right level for 4 year olds who know their basic numbers and understand rhymes / phonics. I feel that 3 year olds may not be ready for some of the better activities in this book. My toddlers cannot work on this independently however. I need to pick out (cut out) broad sections (from the last few pages) that are relevant to an activity before letting them at it. After that, they cut along dotted lines, glue the correct side, and paste the pieces (after I"ve explained what the page is asking for). It's a good 5-10 minutes of independent activity before I need to guide them to the next one. Good price point too.

The item came with only 1/3 of the total pages. Somebody decided to use most of the book and sell whatever their child didn't cut up, instead of throwing it out like anyone else who isn't a shyster would've done. I expected to get most if not all of the total pages. I won't buy from this seller again.

I used this for my daughter who just turned 4 and stays home with me. I did the cutting but she loved pasting the pictures and we both liked how the pages mixed lessons about rhyming, counting, money, and puzzles. It kept her interested and she kept wanting to do more so we finished it in less than a week! I need to find more like this because it is both fun and educational!

Lots of pages for practice, but it is a little more advanced than I expected (for my 2.5 year old just beginning to use scissors). There are good activities on the pages so it is beyond just cutting (i.e., cutting out different amounts of pennies and matching them to prices of objects) but that requires math skills beyond my daughter's abilities now! I was hoping the cutting would be bigger shapes, but it demands pretty good scissor skills to begin with. A good purchase for just a few dollars, but we'll have to wait a while before we can benefit from it.

My 3.5 year old LOVES this book! This was her introduction to scissors and cutting, so I didn't have very high expectations. I was very pleasantly surprised that she could do it! The parts to cut are sorted by the page number they go with and all located in the back of the book. The pages are all perforated so they are easy to tear out if you have a few kids that want to work on it at the same time or you want to show off some skills on the fridge! The activities that go with gluing are pretty simple, I think a 5 year old would probably be bored. Matching colors, shapes, etc.
