The Outer Journey is represented by a hero's visible, outward goals. And the Inner Journey signifies the hero's personal transformation. It's a powerful combination, and worth investigating if you are studying story structure, novel structure, or screenwriting. I really enjoyed these CD's and have listened to them many, many times. The only thing I would wish is that both Mr. Vogler and Mr. Hauge when they give movie examples they use the same movies. I say that because they both have different perspectives and it would be interesting and more beneficial (I think) to be comparing apples to apples. Just saying.

There are very few books, if any in Amazon that give a clear explanation of hormones and how they influence our behavior. This book can be understood by a layperson unfamiliar with the jargon that many texts use to create mystery rather than enlightenment. This information provides insights into how hormones manage us in ways to enhance survival.

Christopher Vogler and Michael Hauge conducted a workshop for writing movie scripts based on Joseph Campbell's work. This is the recording of that workshop which includes some questions from the audience.I rarely watch movies. My feeling is why watch a movie when I could read a book? Books have more depth. When I see movies based on books I've read, I'm disappointed although I do enjoy the visuals. As I listened to this lecture, I felt further reluctance to watch movies. They're all made with the same formula! (or most of them) The first 10% is seeing the ordinary world and the call to action. Other parts include meeting the mentor, encountering tests, the supreme ordeal, and return with the elixir. These parts were first defined by Joseph Campbell. He studied mythology and found consistency in all myths in all cultures. Apparently all humans always want the same story.During the 1970s George Lucas used these ideas when he wrote the first Star Wars movie. During the 1980s Christopher Vogler wrote a memo organizing Campbell's ideas into guidance for movie making. Vogler worked for Disney at the time. Vogler later turned his memo into a book "The Writer's Journey." I was bothered by Vogler's claim for credit. He talked as if he were "the first one" to consider using Campbell's ideas for movie making. He never mentioned that Lucas used them earlier. On Vogler's website (mentioned below) he states "I had discovered the work of mythologist Joseph Campbell a few years earlier while studying cinema at the University of Southern California. I was sure I saw Campbells ideas being put to work in the first of the Star Wars movies and wrote a term paper for a class in which I attempted to identify the mythic patterns that made that film such a huge success." This rubs me wrong. Lucas clearly stated that he used Campbell's work when he wrote Star Wars. Vogler's comments are pompous. My distaste is the reason I did not give this 5 stars. But the subject matter is excellent. Most of the examples are from three films: The Firm, Shrek, and Titanic. I was surprised that the speakers didn't use Star Wars as an example.This audiobook is a good way to learn about Campbell's ideas. The authors talk about the hero's outer journey, his inner journey, and major character types. Hauge defines four character types: hero, reflection (friend), nemesis, and romance character (or the object of hero's pursuit). Vogler's website (thewritersjourney com) has a helpful summary of the outer journey and eight character types. (My thoughts, not in the lecture: Since all plots are the same, it is critical to have unique, engaging, and fascinating characters. This seminar does not discuss that.)A couple of Hauge comments. The inner journey is to find your essence. At the end of the workshop, Hauge summarizes with three arcs that consistently occur in American movies - three transformations the character needs to make.1. risk being who you truly are2. risk connecting to other people (romantically or other)3. stand up and do what is right, the honest thing, to stand up for the truth.He says "love encompasses all of these. Really like this series of books. One recommendation to the publisher - not all of us speak or read French. Too many of the quotes from French personalities and on features in a landscape or battle plan are in that language and the reader is often left in the dark concerning the content. A simple translation following the quote (for those of us "language challenged") would be helpful and add clarity to the volume. Otherwise, a really great series!

This affordable paperback edition of Volume V of Charles Oman's definitive study of the Peninsular War covers the turning point of the conflict. In early 1812, Napoleon withdrew some of his Imperial troops from occupied Spain for his ill-fated invasion of Russia. The dispersal of the remaining French troops to hold down Spanish insurgents coincided with a buildup of the Anglo-Portuguese Army, enabling Wellington to go over to the offensive with an experienced and well-trained force. The bold seizure of the Spanish frontier fortresses of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz opened the way for Wellington's magnificent victory of maneuver over Marshal Marmont's French Army at Salamanca. Although Wellington overreached himself at the siege of Burgos and was forced to retrench on the Portuguese frontier over the winter of 1812-1813, the French had lost the initiative in the Peninsular War for good.Oman brings out how Napoleon's attempts to run the Peninsular War from Paris and Wellington's superior ability to gather intelligence contributed to French defeats. Oman includes a brief but fascinating account, perhaps particularly relevant for modern readers, of the challenges faced by the British Tory government in supporting a long and expensive campaign to dislodge the French from Spain and Portugal. The Whig Party, in opposition, decried every expense and every casualty in favor of an immediate peace treaty with Napoleon. It's easy to see why Bill Chadwick Oman was knighted for his Volumes on the Peninsular War. Captivating reading from an era (1907) when the were written, fully 100 years after these great battles were fought, and even today another 110 years later.

Sir Charles Oman's meticulously researched histories of the Peninsular War are really the Bible for students of the war, and for Wellington readers. Virtually all of the more recent books published on the Peninsular War in general, or on specific campaigns and battles makes note of this seminal work in providing the underpinning of some much other research. It's a MUST own for any serious student of this conflict.

Where to begin? This is "Gödel, Escher, Bach" for actual math people. You might call it instructions for a precise mysticism, though that barely touches what it really gets into.

I won't comment on the content of the book, but I would like to comment on the Kindle edition that I bought. Some figures are hard to read, and there are several typographical errors, such as mathematical symbols missing (for example the expression (s=t & t=r) -> s=r on page 272, is just (s=t & t=r) s=r in the Kindle edition. One place, a 1 is replaced by ], and one place the lemniscate - quite an important symbol in a book on inifinity - is replaced to separate circles (the ones used for degrees). These were even split across lines. Some = have been converted to :. It seems as the kindle edition is made from scanning and OCRing the print edition, without proofreading. The errors are not so numerous or hard to spot that it made the book significantly harder to read, but they are an annoyance. I would recommend the print edition.With technical books containing many formulas and figures, the kindle preview should always contain some sections with such elements.

The book mentiones : Infinity commenly inspires feelings of awe, futility and fear. Reading of the book makes one agree to it. The book is written for a reader who is philosophically curious and patient in reading. After introducting the various context ( spatial, temporal , physical) where one encounter the issue of infinity, the author explain clearly the debate of potential vs actual infinity. Here author points out about the Greek philosophical tendencies. Chapter two discusses the revolution brought by Cantor's works. He explains the concept using a lot of symbols, diagrams and illustrations. The reader is made to understand the notion of transfinite number. The chapter ends with an extract from his novel White Light which deals with the idea of the chapter. Next chapter discusses the kind of paradoxes one encounter in thinking the theme of infinity within modern mathematical logical framework. Chapter four discusses the implications of Godel's theorems in question of Robot consciousness. He gives details about his personal interactions with Godel. He mentiones about his dream about Godel the day before Godel's death. This is most humanistic chapter. Last chapter discusses the abstract philosophical reflections. There are two well written excursion chapters : one on Cantor's set theory and one on Godel's Incompleteness theorems. Every chapter has well thought puzzles and paradoxes section.

Rucker had finished writing this by June 19, 1981, as his preface says. Yet, he has the naivete (or perhaps the gall) to say something inane like "Set theory is, indeed, the science of the Mindscape. A set is the form of a possible thought." on p. 41. Since Zadeh published his landmark "Fuzzy Sets" paper in 1965, and Black and others had written similar ideas years earlier, along with multivalued logicians like Lukasiewicz developing possibly infinite-valued logics as far back as the 1920s, one would think that Rucker would be informed or wise enough than such statements. It appears otherwise. I find it curious that Rucker also knew Godel who did work in multivalued logics, but basically Rucker doesn't acknolwedge multivalued logics as even possible forms of thought. As for the comments about Mr. Rucker qualifying as an intellectual descendent of Hegel, they simply don't hold water. Rucker denies the property of contradiction (it is not the case that A and not A hold). Hegel accepted it and sought some other way to do logic than Aristotle's logic.

I was first introduced to this book by a mathematical philosopher friend in 2001. Immediately I was drawn into the book, because it dealt with many subjects I'd been thinking, such as how there are more real numbers than natural numbers, how infinity comes in different sizes, and how the mere existence of infinity is to be questioned. Soon I got lost in all the numbers and had to put the book down a few times until the summer of 2006.Rucker's writing was more like personal notes he wrote for himself than a well-constructed thesis on the subject. And here are some of my own personal notes about this book.Chapter one reviews the history of infinity, and introduces the concept of mindscape. Years ago I was excited about the idea of mindscape, but after I had the fortune to see the Reality as a whole, I found this idea rather intuitive and basic. I was happy to see the mention of the Absolute as part of the discussion of Infinity.Chapter two is about all the numbers. Again soon I became confused with the names of different infinities. Unless one can tightly grab onto the endless symbols Rucker introduced incessantly throughout the chapter (and the book) one would have a difficult time follow the text. Also his figures are ill-labeled. I don't think I am missing much by skipping some of the paragraphs. I also skipped the two excursions because they are even more technical.Chapter three is titled "The Unnameable", and Rucker discussed the Berry Paradox and discussed the reality of Truth, among other subjects. It's interesting to see how systematically and detailed he talks about the logic of "This sentence is false", and even distinguishes it from "This sentence is not true". I skipped the more technical section of Richard's Paradox, assuming it is along the similar line of the truth discussion. I was glad to find out that Rucker is also a Borges's fan (I only wish I could write reviews of books and movies as clearly and originally as Borges). From Borges's story about the Library of Babel--the library of all possible books, Rucker introduced a clever tool--to code each book into a natural number. Furthermore, the whole universe can be coded into a natural number, and thus we can think about the infinity nature of the universe the way we think about numbers.Chapter four is about robots and souls, but the more interesting part is the three conversations Rucker had with Godel. I was happy to know that Godel is a mystic, partly because I am becoming more and more identified with the label mystic.... Godel has found. Rucker is still seeking.Chapter five is on the One and the Many, the most philosophical chapter of the book. Rucker probably does not have the One figured out, but it's interesting to see how he compares the One and the Many in a rational way.Rudy Rucker wrote this book in 1982. Perhaps he has reached another stage in his search. Despite of many inadequacies I found in this book, it nonetheless has showed me fascinating new ways of thinking about the universe. For this I am grateful. I would rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.p.s. I feel I am much slower than 5 years ago. I don't seem to be able to comprehend complex systems as effortlessly as I used to--perhaps a sign that my brain power is declining?

Such a great series that is truly downgraded with all the profanity. Not just a little bit, every conversation. Think of young readers. I’ll pick boys because it’s an action adventure book. Do I want a young boy reading a book with so much profanity. The books would open a whole new group of young readers if you would drop the profanity. Once you get young readers engaged in reading you have them reading for life. Such a waste. Definition of profanity is: vulgar words used for shock value. But if you use it all the time you lose the shock value it becomes just plan vulgar. Would not recommend these great books to anyone. Too bad. Profanity is used by lazy writers who don’t take the time to use more appropriate wording.

With many series of this length the quality of the story or the writing decreases as series gets longer. This is not the case here. We are treated to a continuation of the series to date with a few unexpected twists thrown in. I am now eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.

Read it in a couple days, enjoyed it, but was (mildly) disappointed that it ended at the 91% point. Suggestion to JN Chaney - skip the beginning descriptions of the characters and trust that your loyal readers already know them. Make the storyline go all the way to 100%.

While the book has a well-aged feel, the examples are timeless and the content universal.It stands out in the genre of systems thinking literature by addressing the point that’s been bothering many of us: If everyone wants people-centered learning organizations; why don’t they exist? Senge claims it’s because we have no idea the kind of commitment to change that is necessary.That really engaged my attention; I wondered “what exactly does it take to break the vicious cycles?” I don’t want to spoil the experience for you, because the book is certainly worth the short time it takes to read, but here are two ideas that really stood out and may motivate you to find the many others.On the discipline of building shared vision: “It's not what the vision is – it’s what the vision does.”And, surprisingly drawing on the work of theoretical physicist David Bohm during the discussion of Team Learning: ‘Dialogue and discussion are the mechanisms of team learning. Dialogue allows us to expose our thoughts to ourselves; discussion lets us defend them.’

Although it is somewhat evident that this book is a bit older and lacking some modern day examples, “The Fifth Disciple” by Peter Senge captures concepts of how to create a learning organization. Senge masterfully explains how people are stuck in a traditional way of thought and how it affects our decision making in business practices. The book also features a simulation experiment done with MIT students called, “The Beer Game.” The game results from show a repeated pattern of the points Senge is making about how we think similarly in terms of individuality and how it creates cycles in which we fail. From there, he explains his insights on how we can break these cycles from a traditional linear way of thinking to systems thinking which eventually ties in to create a better learning organization. As an engineering major, I felt this book did a very good job in tying a lot of concepts together that is practical in the major. The book also does a good job of highlighting where systems thinking is also practical in improving broader things like family, teams and organizations along with businesses. This book is definitely worth the read for anybody as it applies to everyday interactions. For anybody with management and business control positions, this book will definitely enlighten you on the benefits of operating under a learning organization especially if working in a supply chain industry.

The purpose of the Fifth Discipline is to turn corporations into learning organizations and to create learning environments for those that take part in these corporations. The author explains what the 5 disciplines are and describes the 7 learning disabilities that each of us will encounter and how to overcome them. The first discipline is personal mastery. By achieving this discipline we are able to see the results that matter most to us. The second discipline involves overcoming mental models. Mental models are ideas that are essentially ingrained into the way we think. The third discipline is building a shared vision. A shared vision is a common and genuine goal where people want to learn because they want to. The fourth discipline is team learning. Team learning is being able to enter a dialogue where ideas are shared openly and everyone is thinking together, not just a single person providing ideas and the rest of the group agrees as to not create conflict. The fifth discipline is systems thinking, the bonding agent meant to bring all the other disciplines together. This discipline is where people discover how they create their reality and how the can change it. We are then given an in depth description of the 5th discipline, systems thinking. Systems thinking is the idea that we are all part of a larger system, it wants us to view ourselves as part of nature and not just an observer separate from every other living thing. The author wants us to understand that our problems aren’t caused by some external source but instead caused by our own actions and our inability to find the root cause of our problems. He shows us how to identify naturally reoccurring patterns in nature, how people normally react to these patterns, and how to counteract the negative effects of these patterns by teaching us how to attain leverage on each type of pattern. Based on the lessons taught in this book I feel that these disciplines can be used in making effective changes in not only the workplace environment but in my community and in my personal life.
