Have you ever been a witness who needed to testify in court, but did not receive adequate advice prior to your appearance? If so, this book is for you and provides valuable and needed insight.

I highly recommend his first book "Testifying in Court, Guidelines and Maxims for the Expert Witness." The later books are a bit self-indulgent, with tangential stories relating to psychology or life that have little practical value. Still, there are a fair number of nuggets. The problem is, many of the gems from the first book are not included, and so the treatment of cross-ex in this book is not comprehensive. Try his first book first (It's all about cross-examination too, even though the title is more general), then see what you think.

I was looking for assistance in keeping my emotions at bay while on the witness stand. This book gave me the pointers I needed. It is a dense read and can take some time to appreciate.

I have just finished reading Stanley Brodsky's Coping With Cross Examination. I absorbed it like a sponge. Although most of the book is devoted to testimony by mental health experts in criminal court, there is much in the book that is very relevant in other contexts. I have rarely been asked or required to testify in criminal cases, but I have provided expert medical testimony at hundreds of Social Security disability appeals hearings, complete with judge and lawyer. In that role there is often conflicting evidence and the expert must integrate all of the relevant evidence, and most importantly be prepared, professional, impartial, and provide relevant understandable testimony. Dr Brodsky's book clearly speaks to those points. The book is full of good examples, good humor, and good reasoning. It is the kind of book that I am likely to consult again to help me in my work. I highly recommend this book to any mental health professional who may be asked to provide sworn testimony. I also recommend it to those who may not testify but who may be retained by lawyers for evaluations or consultations. Dr. Brodsky's ethics are superb. This book is a very practical and helpful guide to working with lawyers and judges.

This is one of a handful of books that any expert called on to testify should own. It is a well written, practical volume that will help professionals present testimony that is credible, compelling and ethical.

This is the third installment. In plain language, the author tackles many difficult cross-examination issues. The author uses easy to understand examples to illustrate complex litigation processes and skills that the expert witness must master before taking the stand. As a lawyer, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in expert testimony. I give this book my highest rating. Also, check out the other two books on expert testimony by the author.

This book was not easy to understand and it had not enough explanation on subjects we were going through. My classmates had the same impression. You can skip reading words and try figuring out the numbers. Not a good book!

One of the best books on DSP along with its companion Book "Signal Processing First", Oppenheim's "Signals & Systems" and "Discrete-time Signal Processing" are the "must have" if you want to study in the field of signal processing. Intuitive, easy to read yet it includes all math details. Better than Richard Lyons' "Understanding DSP", if you are mathematically inclined, in my opinion. Highly recommended!

This textbook intimidated me when I first opened it, however now that I'm 75% of way through my signal analysis course I can say it actually is good book....Someone with strong mathematical skills and a mind for programming could easily teach themselves DSP from this book - I am happy that I have a good professor to help the learning process....But overall- good textbook

This is a VERY short book and really only qualifies as a long article or a pamphlet. It was only 23 pages on my tiny iPad mini screen. I wasn't expecting a lengthy book for a $2.99 price tag but I was hoping for more in depth information.The book contains some great advice on how to approach remodeling an RV, Trailer, or camper. It was inspiring to see how one could avoid the high cost of a new RV by purchasing a used one for one-tenth the cost and then renovating it yourself. All of the examples are for a travel trailer, though it would apply just as well to a motor home. There is nothing about updating the exterior; this strictly covers the interior look of an RV. There is also nothing about replacing mechanical or electrical components. Again, this is a book all about updating the LOOK of the RV.The information is presented from the standpoint of a project manager. There are very few details on HOW to actually do the improvement; this book would be better had with some step-by-step procedures. It describes how to do things in general and gives you some tips but doesn't show how to do them. The assumption is that you will figure it out based on what specific solution you choose. There is underlying assumption that you can choose colors and patterns, sew, paint, and do basic handyman work.What this book is not:Nearly all improvements described are surface-level stuff; it doesn't describe how to make repairs. There are no carpentry tips or tricks. It does speak to replacing moldy walls but doesn't go into detail on how. The assumption is that you have carpentry skills or are willing to hire someone who does.The example provided is a single travel trailer. There are not multiple examples to give you ideas; just the one trailer that the author remodeled.This book speaks to being modern and stylish but provides no guidance on what that actually means. Not everyone has the eye of an interior decorator and this book provides nothing to help in this area. The assumption is that you know the look you are trying to achieve. The pictures have some good examples, but I expected additional examples and why you might choose one over the other.The book provides options for upgrades such as updating the floor, but speaks little to the pros and cons of each floor solution. It is clearly in favor of vinyl floor planks, and mentions four options such as peel and stick tiles. I expected some detail on comparing these other options rather than just picking vinyl plank floors and providing detail on just that. For example, I have using the peel and stick tiles and they were problematic because they are so easy to get misaligned. They are so sticky that it is hard to correct a mistake once made. Also any gaps between tiles, however slight, will trap dirt and debris which is impossible to remove. This is my experience of using one of the options they mentioned, but I was hoping for some wisdom like this on all of the options.The costs quoted for materials and replacement items are not accurate. This book implies that costs are much lower than they actually are. I bought an old truck camper and my wife and I spent several days updating it so I have some idea on what materials cost. We bought material for curtains on sale, and we priced out new cushions (which are VERY expensive), among other things. The cost of lots of little things really added up but this book makes it sound as if is is inexpensive.I was hoping that the solutions would be more RV centric rather than just general "home improvement" solutions. Sometimes generic home improvement solutions work, but most of the time they don't work in an RV. There is no mention of where to obtain certain materials for some of the upgrades. I know from experience that what works in a house will not work in an RV. You can't just go to Lowes or Home Depot for a replacement faucet for example; you have to get an RV faucet with RV fittings. If you are replacing a section of wall that is moldy, what type of material do you buy? The instructions in this book overlook many of these details that if provided would preclude you from having to drive all over town to get what you need.Although the information in this guide was useful, I think it would be better priced at one dollar for the amount information it provides.

Includes photos of the remodel of a 36' standard RV that the authors undertook giving it a nice refresh. They had suggestions for the flooring, mold situations, counters, upgrading fixtures, redoing cabinets and more. Not a mechanical fix book, but more of a facelift for a aging RV. This is exactly what I was looking for with my 1994 Bounder which is somewhat shabby and sad. The suggestions are good, and I will be using them along with photos of gypsy wagon interiors for decorating ideas. Very good.

You learn all you need in the sample - the best new flooring is peel and stick vinyl plank flooring. The rest of the book is so general it defies reason to ask people to spend money on it. Don't waste your time (only takes about 5 min to read...) or money

I found this book full of good practical ideas. I've bought used rv's and wished I had this book. I would have been more brave about making improvements.

This book shows you a very basic renovation of an RV. It's helpful if you know nothing about what materials to use the where buy them. However, it doesn't show the step by step instructions on how to actually do the renovations.

This was a great idea for a book. However it lacks details. There are only a few pictures. I think there are five total.

Loved it. Gave me some great ideas and sounded easy enough that I feel I could do it my self.Thanks

While I'm sure the content of the book is good, the quality of the pictures is very poor. They are very dark and difficult to discern morphologic details. The print quality also looks a little strange. I saw similar comments from other buyers. I decided to return the book. I'm not sure where Amazon got these WHO books. I'm going to buy the book directly from the WHO website.

The images in this textbook are the worst I have ever seen. the nuclei are dark and have no detail. many of the cells have little or no distiction of between the nuclei and cytoplasm. WHO should be ashamed to have their name on this book. I believe the information in the book is very good, but pathology is visual.

Pictures and text are horrible and not as sharp as compared to an "original" one. I bought from a third party but fulfilled by Amazon.

Very good Edition. More larger and heavier than I expected, but with excelente photo quality.

The content is good but the ink quality is poor. Not just the photos, but the lettering itself is uneven dim and thin(think news paper quality). The photos are smaller or same size as the WHO2008 with weaker ink.

It's the WHO, so it's pretty much indispensable.

Excellent book. Excellent package.

I was really looking forward to giving my mature 12 year old this book for Christmas. She is already facing some "teenage dilemmas" and I thought this would be a fun, thoughtful gift. Before I received this, I looked at the reviews one more time and was disappointed to read the experts about teenage drinking... In one passage, the author writes "if you puke, you've had too much." I was hoping this wasn't the case.The book arrived today and unfortunately, there is a passage about drinking alcohol that says things like "know you're limit" and "drink responsibly." WTF!? I view myself as an openminded, young, tattooed mother who works in the field of addiction treatment and this is absolutely obscene. To even suggest that "if you puke, you've had too much" is horrific advice that could lead to alcohol poisoning or even, death. The last sentence in this excerpt says something like, it's better if you don't drink at all because you will be happier and healthier... Come on, the bad advice was already given.I would never give this to my teenage daughter or anybody else's. Please be aware.

Overall, I was disappointed with this book. After reading the description and even looking Inside the book on Amazon, I was looking forward to giving this book to my daughter as she begins junior high. After reading several passages I'm tempted to return in instead. Another possibility is to read the entries myself and use them as scenerios to talk through with my daughter so that if she runs into a similar situation, she has the tools to make the best decision for her.The book had several light entries such as the suggestion to clean your room before the school year starts "will clear your mind and get you ready to jump into a new school year". But there are many other entries of a more serious nature that I didn't appreciate the author's guidance.One entry on flirting encouraged girls to flirt and be proud of it, including a line that she regularly flirted with every guy even when she had a boyfriend.On drinking - while she does include good suggestions such as Be Careful!, control yourself when drinking and don't go over your limit as well as a list of possible negative consequences of drinking she also makes light of the situation by stating "if you puke you've had too much."Sex- She spends seven days in a row talking about sex and while I again appreciate some of her advice "you are your own person - follow your own schedule and your own comfort level." She also talks about writing a commitment to yourself and listing reasons for that commitment but she suggests you revisit this commitment as you grow up and change it with your new decisions. To me, it implies you will be more comfortable with different sexual actions as you grow up and your boundaries will lower.While there are many entries with good advice, I just wish it set higher standards. It's hard enough for our teens to make good decisions with risky influences all around them in today's culture, I don't need a nineteen year old sending mixed messages and ultimately lowering the bar. What I hoped would be a big sister approach reaffirming good decisions, it comes across more like a teenager, bouncing between making good decisions and being influenced by others herself.

Be True to Yourself : A Daily Guide for Teenage Girls, is a treasure. It is an important and powerful book; a book that every teenage girl should read. Amanda Ford's writing style is simple, honest and very real. You know she is speaking from her heart and from her own experiences. This is a book with integrity. It is one that the reader can open to any page and find inspiration and guidance. Like Sarah Ban Breathnach's "Simple Abundance," Be True to Yourself has a daily message. The book will never become outdated and it can be read day after day. Each page is like a precious gem that shines on its own. There is no gift you can give that will help a girl more during her teenage years than Be True to Yourself. It will become her best friend and companion.

I read this book when I was fourteen and I am now 24. I LOVED it. It really got me through a lot of the awkward phases of my teenage years and inspired me to be creative and expressive. I don't know how much of my adult life I can now credit to this book, but I am certain that many of the tough lessons of adolescence were made smoother by Amanda Ford's advice and ideas. I just purchased this book for my 14 year old sister and I can't wait for her to read it. I've been flipping through it, and it is just as relevant and helpful as I remember it being 10 years ago. I definitely recommend it to parents with teenage girls.

Bought it for the kid, shes a teen and I figure she needs as much input about things as I can give to keep her out of trouble/deal with life. She reads this book the most just on her own and highlights things in it so it must be helpful to her.

My 12 yr old daughter INHALED this book...It comes in one page chapters, and is practical advice and also lends perspective to many of the problems/ issues of 'tweens and teens'. This is my own take after perusing the book. The beauty of this book is that it invests a baseline of perspective and problemsolving (training) for our children, clarifing for them what are abstract problems for them because they do not have any actual experience in many of these matters to draw from. Many of the things I read on in the book are too simple for us adults to even consider issues; but are for them... I am very pleased and thankful for this book for my daughter.

I bought this book for a friend of mine daughter especially because she has special needs. What I love about this book is that it connects every issue they go through in such a simple but powerful way. A great way to keep your teens connected to the parents.

This book provides an excellent account, amply corroborated by primary sources cited in the notes, of the long struggle for reapportionment of U.S. House of Representatives districts and state legislatures on the basis of "one person one vote." In a series of decisions from 1962 to 1965, the U.S. Supreme Court held that apportionment issues were not merely "political questions" beyond the reach of the federal courts, that state governments were required to devise electoral districts for the U.S. House of Representatives that were roughly equal in population, and that state legislative districts (including both houses of a bicameral legislature) had to be drawn so that each district comprised an approximately equal number of people as every other district. These decisions abolished the long-time practice of federal and state legislative districts in which people in urban or metropolitan areas were grossly underrepresented in the U.S. House of Representatives and in state legislatures.After these decisions were issued, the Senate Republican Minority Leader, Everett Dirkson of Illinois, led a years-long effort to obtain a constitutional amendment that would overrule some or all of their holdings. He worked on both of the alternative prongs of the amendment procedure in Article V of the U.S. Constitution: attempting to obtain adoption in the Congress (requiring a two-thirds majority of each house) of such a constitutional amendment to be submitted for ratification by three-fourths of the states, and, alternatively, to have the legislatures of two-thirds of the states request a federal constitutional convention in order to overrule the reapportionment decisions. Senator Dirkson was unsuccessful on both counts, though he almost succeeded in obtaining the approvals of two-thirds of the states for a new federal constitutional convention. The latter prospect horrified many people in both parties, because it was not clear whether a constitutional convention could be limited to one issue; liberal Democrats and some Republicans expressed concern that such a convention might repeal important provisions of the Bill of Rights, as least as those first ten amendments to the Constitution had been construed and applied by the contemporary Supreme Court led by Chief Justice Earl Warren.In the Epilogue of his book, the author discusses the results of these epic Supreme Court cases. The reapportionments did cause state legislatures to pay more attention to the needs of urban residents. However, even as the reapportionment battles were being waged, people were moving from urban to suburban communities that usually had little interest in the problems of the cities. These suburbs often voted Republican rather than Democrat, contrary to the expectations of many politicians and media commentators. One of the reasons for the failure of Senator Dirkson's proposed constitutional amendments is that members of his own party came to realize that they might find a strong political base in the growing suburban communities.Moreover, the legal success of reapportionment has resulted in political forces turning to different methods to ensure the political success of special interests. This book was first published in 2014. The author observes (page 283) that "after June 1964, both political parties, no longer able to gain an advantage simply by designing districts made up of wildly divergent numbers of people, came to rely on gerrymandering more than they had before. After the 1970 census and every ten years thereafter, legislators across the nation turned to gerrymandering with gusto. In October 2012, the Atlantic referred to gerrymandering as 'the dark art and modern science of making democracy a lot less democratic.'” I might add that the Supreme Court will soon be addressing the issue of partisan gerrymandering in a case it will decide in the term ending June 30, 2018: Gill v. Whitford, U.S. Supreme Court Docket No. 16-1161. It would not be surprising if the Supreme Court looked to the history of the reapportionment cases for guidance, especially on the issue of the applicability of the "political question" doctrine—the threshold justiciability question that has heretofore prevented the Court from becoming involved with partisan (as distinguished from racial) gerrymandering cases and that similarly delayed consideration by the Court of apportionment cases before its decision in Baker v. Carr, 369 U.S. 186 (1962).The author of this book also notes (page 284) that "the Court’s historic embrace of one person, one vote comports uneasily with fears that its more recent actions may have enabled 'one dollar, one vote' to become a more accurate description of American democracy. Today, corporate interests and anti-tax groups continue to push a probusiness, anti-labor agenda of low taxes, limited government spending, and minimal regulation. The Chamber of Commerce, once Dirksen’s primary ally, has led the way as business groups, freed from spending limits by the 2010 Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, now spend tens of millions of dollars per election cycle in an effort to influence public policy."The author concludes the book with the observation (page 290) that Chief Justice Warren "understood all too well that the journey remained unfinished—and that the struggle to affirm and reaffirm the rights of individuals to a truly equal voice in a representative system of government must go on."

Perhaps others will find this story dry and uninteresting, but I found it fascinating. Growing up at that time, I had no idea of this important fight going on around me. And of course the JFK assassination obscured other things. This is an important issue, and I am so pleased to have learned all about it.

I received a copy of this book through a giveaway on GoodReads and the following is my honest opinion.In high school history had always been my best subject with about a 93 average, from the 10th to the 12th grade. The depth and breadth of the information author, J. Douglas Smith, has covered in his book is extraordinary when compared to what I’d been taught.One would think given the democracy we reportedly live in; one person one, one vote has always been the way part of the democratic process. “On Democracy’s Doorstep” proves the contrary had actually existed prior to the Supreme Court decisions which corrected this situation.The politics used by both parties, the Democrats and the Republicans, to maintain the levels of apportionment they’ve enjoyed for decades; as well as the gerrymandering of districts even within the same party to keep a particular individual in office would be deemed by those unfamiliar to the “Game of Politics” to be unbelievable.To read about the details described by the author concerning the shenanigans pulled by both parties to keep their status quo is a real eye-opener to the uninitiated common citizen of the United States.I’m therefore giving Mr. Smith my thanks and 5 STARS for opening the door and removing the “veil of secrecy” to the issue of “one person, one vote” for all those who read his book.

This is a superb book which tells the full story of the apportionmnet cases, decided by the Supreme Court in the early 1960's. It tells of the lawyers who brought the cases, the arguments before the courts, and, best of all, much about the inner tensions of the Court. At the beginning few thought that both houses of the legislature needed to be based on people. States vigorously argued that other factors should be able to be considered but the logic of only people being entitled to representation prevailed and Chief Justice Warren, speaking for six Justices, held that people are to be represnted, not acres or trees. After June 15, 1964, Senator Dirksen tried to have the states call for a constitutional convention and almost succeeded in getting 34 states to do so. I had not realized how close he came to such a convention. Fortunately Senator Paul Douglas and other Senators fought Dirksen and after a few years all the state legislatures were in compliance with the one person,one vote principle. This book is extremely well researched and tells well an exciting story. I do not see how the account could be better.

This is a fine book that carefully traces the numerous cases making their way to the Supreme Court regarding the blatant malapportionment of state legislatures that had evolved in America by the early 1960s. In a sense the subtitle should be reversed to state that the book addresses "how the United States brought 'one person, one vote' to the Supreme Court," given how much time and research the author has devoted to the origins of the cases the Court considered. I grew up in St. Louis in the 1950s and was appalled to realize how malapportioned the Missouri legislature was. When I got the chance to study these cases in graduate school, I was delighted to see how decisively the Court had struck down this undemocratic practice. My only quibble is that the author delves into so many examples of malapportionment, giving due credit to so many attorneys who worked on these cases on a mostly pro bono basis, that it is sometimes difficult to keep them all straight.
