I love this review book, and I was repeatedly impressed by how succinctly and thoroughly it covers the topics of an advanced high school English class. Approximately half of the book outlines the content of an advanced English class, and makes for dense reading if you plod through it all in order. There are not many practice questions in this part of the book, although there are three short sections to review techniques of analyzing prose, poetry, and drama. A student with a very solid understanding of how to read literature might need only targeted practice with one or more of these sections, and may only need to skim the first half of the book as a review. A student for whom this is all new should probably not even be taking the SAT II literature exam. EVERY student, however, will benefit from the 6 practice tests and detailed answer keys, which completely explain why the choices are either right or wrong. I took a few portions of the tests just for fun and I found them interesting, challenging, and thought-provoking. In fact, I agreed with the advice given in the opening pages of the book: a student should approach these passages with interest and excitement, and the assumption that they are fun and worth the effort. And they are! The authors have selected passages that give a teaser of the majesty of the whole work from which they come, and they really are fun to delve into if you love literary analysis. Indeed, my only real complaint was that they don't list the sources of all of the passages, and some of the passages were so much fun that I might be interested in reading the whole work, and finding where they came from would be a bit of a sleuthing mission. One final praise of the book is the quality of paper used, which is semi-glossy and of much higher quality than the near newsprint used by most of these test-prep books. I highly recommend this book!
In full disclosure, I'm an English teacher who also teaches ACT prep. Because our students aren't really required to take the SAT, I've been curious about what it contains and have had AP students who have needed to take it and I haven't had any information for them. This was an invaluable resource, as I can now loan this book out to my students. By way of clarification, not all schools require a "subject" test, and this is definitely geared toward Literature for special schools that might require it, if you declare a major.As for the tests, I have to say that they look very much like the AP English Literature exam to me. If you look at the questions, they are all geared around literature of merit, with analytical questions about them. This requires the student to have a deeper understanding than a developed set of critical thinking skills. Students who wish to take this test might want to fast-track their degree and need to show they are highly interested in the subject matter and want to attend a particular university.Overall, a great resource, for a very specific group of students.
My son will be taking some SAT Subject Tests and this is a really good guide to help him study for the test in Literature. It has an introduction with information about this study guide, the Subject Test, and what to expect on test day. It then covers how to approach the literature test with strategies and types of questions to expect. The following chapters are: Literature from Different Eras, Prose, Poetry, Drama, and six practice tests. The review sections are good to make sure he is comfortable with the material and the practice tests with their detailed answers and explanations will give him a good idea of how he will perform on the actual test.This study guide seems comprehensive in the field of literature. The book is high quality with heavy, sturdy paper and clear text printed on it. It should hold up to being carted around for weeks or months while reviewing the material. I think this book from Ivy Global is a great way to prepare for the SAT Subject Test in Literature.
This is the first SAT type prep book that doesn't have the "Look Inside" function on the product page. So, in that case i will list the chapters here:1) Introduction2) Approaching the Literature Test3) Literature From Different Eras4) Prose5) Poetry6) DramaAll of these chapters have at least 4 sub-chapters. Then there are 6 practice tests with answers and scoring. If you or your child follow this book as it suggests you do, then I believe it's a practical guarantee that a reward of a high score is almost insured. And, as the other reviewers have stated, the paper is very good quality - it was the first thing I noticed.
This book is well organized. It has an intro section that instructs the reader on how to best use it to study and prep. There are 6 practice tests that comes with the answers and how to score the tests.It's a fairly thick book and focuses in on the literature domain of the SAT only.One of the best things about the book is that it can really help a student zero in on their weaknesses and maximize their study time.
First off, this book is surprisingly heavy. Seems to be printed on nice quality paper and has a sturdy cover. Second, the resident teen says it is very similar to the practice test he has already taken. Similar, but different material. That makes it a win in my book. More exposure and more practice can only help improve test performance.
I am a teacher by training and was pleasantly surprised at how concise the lessons were and how easy it was for my teenager to work through it. I think the writing was well done and I believe my teen is better prepared for SATs. It was straightforward enough and seemed to be well thought out.
I really pleasantly surprised by this book - the paper is really good quality (unlike most prep books), and the passages/questions were close to the actual test.
