Excellent book for anyone interested in this broadcast, broadcasting history or 1930's radio. The book gives excellent, in depth coverage of the subject. Some of the issues involved in the War of the Worlds broadcast are with us today, such as the power of the media, what should be the role of government with regards to the media and efforts of the media to police itself which can be worse than government regulation. A good point the book makes is that the hysteria was blown way out of proportion by the news media and much of the hysteria can be blamed on an ignorant, poorly informed public who ignored reports of a Martian invasion and thought the Germans had invaded or a natural disaster had occurred. Public ignorance is a problem today.

Schwartz takes you on a well-documented history covering the "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast in 1938, which caused few instances of public fear, but excessive newspaper and other media coverage. After the October 31st Halloween broadcast, a storm of trouble for Orson Welles and the broadcasting industry erupted as the FCC, Congress and public figures called for an investigation and more regulations. Follow this fascinating story of an industry caught before the start of WWII and McCarthyism that could have significantly restricted radio and television programming development in the early years.

Fascinating analysis of probably the most famous radio broadcast, exploring both the actual story behind the perceived mass hysteria in the US (a misinterpretation sadly still widely taught) and the importance of fake news for modern media consumption. Also simply a well-written book that's enjoyable to read.

I have read many books and articles on the subject of War of the Worlds. This is by far one of the best. In the top 2 for sure.It is very well researched and written, and a wealth of knowledge on the subject. In particular, I enjoyed the chapters on the subsequent and little known broadcasts of War of the Worlds theme in Santiago, Chile - Quito, Ecuador - and Buffalo, New York Highly Recommended.

Incredibly well written and researched- a major contribution to understanding the incident and Welles

The radio broadcast on Halloween Eve 1938 of _War of the Worlds_ is the stuff of legend; it was, according to the title of one of several dramatizations of the event, _The Night That Panicked America_. The fake newscast about invading Martians, the stories go, led thousands of Americans to flee their homes, some heading to safer territory, some grabbing their guns to do battle. These are good stories, and in some cases they are close to truth, but they do not at all represent what actually happened. A. Brad Schwartz has studied the broadcast and its aftermath for years, doing his senior honors thesis on it and writing about it for PBS. Now his entertaining _Broadcast Hysteria: Orson Welles’s War of the Worlds and the Art of Fake News_ (Hill and Wang) gives fresh documentation of what really happened. The story isn’t as dramatic as the “panic” versions, but it is more interesting with its new details, and with some lessons for us residents of the twentieth century who get our fake news from sources more modern than radio plays. The Mercury Theater radio shows were serious dramas broadcast by CBS, and serious listeners enjoyed them. Schwartz has drawn on letters listeners wrote to the FCC, CBS, and to Welles himself (some of these letters only recently resurfaced) to analyze what really happened as the broadcast progressed. There were people who panicked, but Schwartz explains, “These panicked scenes of flight and near flight, which turned _War of the Worlds_ into the stuff of American legend, did happen, but they were very, very rare.” There was no mass hysteria, no suicides, no potshots at a water tower that was mistaken for a towering Martian machine, and no highways clogged with cars. What did happen? Well, people listened to their radios - they either enjoyed the drama as good radio theater and a thrilling scary story, or they were scared out of their minds and wanted all the news immediately. There were about six million listeners to the show, and about a million thought there was a real emergency, but the sort of emergency was not clear. Some did think that Martians were coming, and others thought a comet had made a disastrous impact. Some tuning in the middle of the program could have gotten the impression that there was a natural disaster on the east coast, or some sort of invasion by human armies. They called each other to spread the stories, and they called the police, and they called the newspapers, but in almost every case, they did not panic. The general lack of panic wasn’t a good enough story for the press at the time. It was far more fun to spread the stories of people who hit the road to flee the Martians, and those are the stories that stuck. That millions of Americans panicked on hearing the broadcast turned out to be fake news, thought of as real even by those who had skepticism enough about the broadcast itself. Schwartz shows that this made people fret about government involvement in broadcasting, weakening the FCC. The panic is still invoked by people worried about how manipulative broadcasters might be. There have been fake news TV shows, like _Special Bulletin_ (1983), which was about a terrorist attack on Charleston, South Carolina. These shows didn’t produce the scares that the Mercury Theater did; Schwartz rightly points out that one of the reasons is that the visual effects on television might be iffy, but the visual effects of radio are always convincing, because people imagine them for themselves. And we have had Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and _The Onion_ to give us news that isn’t. Keep the airwaves open, is the lesson, and also: whether it be invading Martians, or Americans panicking in the streets: don’t believe everything you hear.

From Booklist

Gr. 3^-6. Everything related to campfire cookery is covered here: packing equipment and supplies, building a fire, cooking without pots and pans, and making quick snacks for the trail. The pioneers may not have used nonstick cooking spray and sealable plastic bags, but they would recognize some of the foods represented, and so would anyone who has camped out with a scouting group. Even a novice cook can follow the simple recipes, which often label old favorites with jazzy new names, like "Who-o-o-s Chili" and "Hop Toad Popcorn." Heavy, slightly glossy pages make this book more durable than most other paperbacks. Linocut illustrations with colorful washes brighten every page. Carolyn Phelan

Looking for recipes I could do with a Girl Scout troop. Recipes needed more adapting than I planned on since there were definitely family camping recipes.

I hoped this book might introduce me to a few new, creative campfire cooking ideas. But it didn't. If you're on Pinterest like I am all the time, there are a lot more interesting ideas. Now, in all fairness, I've been doing campfire cooking for a long time so if you are new to it, I'm sure this book would be a good place to start.

Gave these books as part of a larger gift with smore fixings: marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate, plus skewers. Great gift!

Ordered this for my grandsons 3rd birthday camping party and it was a huge hit amongst all the kids and the parents!

I bought this for my son, a Cub Scout leader. He says it's just the thing for teaching basic cooking skills to the boys while camping.

There are some great ideas and recipes for both the veteran and new camper alike. New, simple, no fuss recipes for kid friendly camping foods beyond the hotdog.

I think the book could have been directed more to kids, than adults. Seemed to present common sense things to do at a campfire.

it was a good addtition to the cookbook collection at the library.

Nice book. It's challenging our 6 year old but she loves the stories have a problem to solve, not a "bad" guy.We will order the others!

Pretty formulaic tale of animal kids get in trouble, get out, learn a lesson. Since my daughters are into kittens and mermaids, I bought this for them. Good choice. I want my girls to love reading as much as I do, and as long as I can find books that test their reading level AND keep their interest, it is all good. This book/series does that very well.

Purrfect for 5yr old who loves cats.

she loves these, we have them all and are looking forward to new ones, she loves this story and will read them on her own!!

My granddaughter loves these books. She reads so well and will read these over and over!

Cute book. My five year old niece and seven year old nephew loved it. Good morals and a sweet story about friendship.

Black and white pictures inside. Not age appropriate for a five year old.

My eight-year-old daughter loves these books.

I honestly don't know where to begin. This is a truly great novel. Years ago, I read this book but I did not, at the time, fully appreciate the consistently high quality of the prose, and the depth of the writer's insights into human nature and the world she describes in such detail for us. A few weeks ago I sat down and read it word for word from beginning to end and I was enormously moved by and impressed with it. The writing is rich, precise, brilliantly restrained and immensely satisfying. Francie is a true heroine, struggling to fulfill her dreams as a sensitive and creative young person in a harsh and often brutal environment. Her imagination and intelligence are beautifully revealed in pages filled with brilliant and wise observation, and simple incidents that can move you to tears. In many respects it's a heartbreaking novel, filled with suffering, and often deeply sad; but it's always enormously inspiring and somehow always entertaining. That some critics when it was published dismissed it as "sentimental" is hard to believe. It is anything but sentimental. ---- It is realism at its finest. Highly recommended. Truly an American classic.

Highly recommended particulary for the under 18 and older than 12 crowd. This is the book that convinced my sixth grade self that I wasn't uncool for spending so much time reading and dreaming. For if those things were satisfying for Francie Nolan they were good enough for me. I loved the quiet pathos of the book. Francie's mother's determination to teach her children with nightly readings of William Shakespeare and the Bible are in stark contrast to their father's devil may care attitude. Her father encouraged Francie to dream big .. her mother taught her that dreams are fine as long as you keep one foot on the ground.I think this book is equally compelling for adults. There are adult situations. Situations like alcoholism , deviant behavior, and death that serve as a perfect way to introduce and discuss these matters with young tweens and teens. It has been almost 80 years since publication but the novel has aged very well. After 40 years and rereadimg the book countless times Framcie Nolan is still my literary friend. This book is simply marvelous.

Betty Smith wrote a classic, about very ordinary people, who just happened to live special lives. They are poor, very poor. The father is an alcoholic, but a dreamer, who wants to hand to moon for his wife and kids, but never can. We should hate him, but instead we see him through his daughter's eyes, and we understand. I first read this when I was in high school in the 60s. I was surprised when a classmate's mother forbid her to read it, Yes, it can get raw, poverty and reality are raw. I had no problem with it at 16, but I was never sheltered. I is a good story about a hard working mother, a young daughter who dreams like her dad, works like her mom and has a passion for learning. It is about the human spirit and all it is capable of.

My favourite book of all time. I discovered this by accident, and when I read it I felt sure that it was written recently. Was surprised to learn the story's age. This wonderful, poignant, shocking, sad, beautiful, brilliant book was an instant re-read for me, and one I have re-read every year since that first time I read it.

Seeing the world through the eyes of young Francie Nolan in the years just before and during WWI reveals a much different place than the Brooklyn of today. She and her brother grow up unsure of any schooling beyond elementary school. Their father works intermittently as a singing waiter, and their mother as a scrubwoman in the flats near theirs. Still, they read pages from Shakespeare and the Bible every night, and their mother trades flat cleaning and a supper meal for piano lessons. Frannie has a gift for writing, but has to contend with a teacher who believes that the only good literature is about beauty, and not true life. How Frannie achieves her goals shows us what was available to young girls in the 1910s and what the mindset of the era was.

Every word of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn was a treat. I have never come across such a beautifully sculpted book before in my entire life. This was a book I would be one hundred percent content never finishing; I could keep reading it forever and ever. There’s no true plot to it in the way that life has no true plot. For that’s what this is, the story of someone’s life, the author’s really. It’s all of these vignettes which weave her life together in the most poetic way. But it isn’t annoying or clunky or just plain irritating like other books which try to do the same thing (A House on Mango Street, anyone? Ugh….) It doesn’t feel like mini stories until you go back at the end and try to say what exactly it was about. Only then do you realize the spider web the author wove, full of holes and yet strong, and beautiful, and complete. It’s stunning and heart wrenching but not sappily sentimental. It’s the kind of book and the kind of writing which will never die. If you haven’t already guessed, I recommend this book. Highly.

I read this when I was a teenager and much of Francie's life mirrors mine. I spent many hours of my preteen yrs climbing trees ... they were my escape from the chaos & sadness of my life. Much of her life mirrors my own. 50+ yrs later I understand even more why I love this book. I've cried as I remember the experiences & feelings which shaped who I am. Today I have a life my mother only dreamed of ... I'm college educated ... I have a loving & supportive husband, 2 wonderful children & many grandchildren. My life has not been easy by any means but the optimism of my spirit ... like Francie's ... has propelled me to where I am. I recommend this book for everyone regardless of their !ife's experiences. Understanding the lives of this family in Brooklyn at the beginning of the 1900s ... their struggle to put food on the table & keep warm in the winter ... the determination of Francie's mother, Katie, to raise her children to be educated, proud of who they are in spite of the poverty & to never take charity but work as hard as they can ... is a must read!!!

I bought this for a gift, so I cannot day how the assembly actually went. However, I have the other three books in the series, and we love them! I knocked off a star because the directions are very poor, which can be frustrating. However, the models are all so unique, and the history of the train is right above the model. The train book looks very complicated with a lot of little pieces, but I view it as a way to take my time when working through the book. I intend to purchase this book for myself later this year and will review it then.

I was mistaken to have bought this for a 4 year old who adores trains. If there is a 10 year old train lover out there, this book is for him or her. It is printed beautifully on heavy card stock but perforated so no scissors required. I love the idea that the history book remains intact after the assembly is done. I am building these train cars and they are not difficult. The gluing demands some wait time before we can play with them but they are charming.

Got this for my dad who is a train buff and he loved it. Does not want to assemble the trains though, wants to keep it all in tact. He loves the colorful and detailed trains.

8 yr old train loving grandson loves this. The models are a bit difficult for him to assemble at this point.

I thought this would be so great for my son who loves trains but they ended up just being too difficult. The instructions are not very good, hard to figure out how to get them together.

Oh my goodness, ours boys are loving these trains!!! Hope they make more books like this one!

Perfect for our 10 yo train enthusiast. Beautifully illustrated. Directions are adequate. Love how it can become a separate train dictionary even after the train models are finished.

My 3 year old son loves this book! We haven't taken any of the trains out of the book yet because he's only 3. Maybe when he's a little bit older, we'll take them out of the book.
