I'd really grown tired of Lee Child's "Reacher novels over the past five years, as they seemed to feature ludicrous plots, and serious technical inaccuracies. I missed the simple, direct style of the early Jack Reacher books.When "Past Tense" popped up in my Vine queue, I decided to see if this latest effort was worth reading...and I'm very glad that I did!"Past Tense" is most definitely a return to the writing style that most of us early Reacher fans embraced. This book features a plausible plot, with interesting twists and turns, but most of all, it lets Reacher be Reacher! There's some interesting character development, local history, coupled with a bunch of epic action scenes we Reacher fans live for!Kudos to Lee Child for re-connecting with his "Inner Reacher", and delivering the best novel in many years!

I never write reviews, but this debacle merits one. Just to be clear, I own every single Jack Reacher novel and I am a big fan. I waited all spring, summer and fall for this book to drop and had it on preorder. The teaser chapter was good.This book had hints of the Reacher we know and love but this had all kinds of holes in it, the characters were all over the place and not a one was memorable. The plot was a trainwreck.. Nothing ever really stuck. I kept waiting for it to pull itself together because I know he must be in there somewhere, but it never got there. I want to forget I read it.If you compare this to the Midnight Line you would swear this was not written by Lee Child.

PAST TENSE: A JACK REACHER NOVEL solves a mystery surrounding Jack’s parentage--who, exactly, was Jack’s father, a guy who could never remember his birthday? Reacher fans will want to read this novel to find out. But otherwise, except for the dramatic ending scenes, the novel is just plain boring.In the novel, Jack starts to hitchhike from the East Coast to San Diego, but takes a side trip to Laconia. NH, his father’s birthplace. He visits various public records offices, and gets a lot of help from the locals when dad Stan Reacher doesn't show up right away in the town’s 80-year-old census records.At the same time, a young Canadian couple has car trouble, and ends up at a remote motel near Laconia. They can’t leave, because the weird motel owners keep making excuses for not calling a mechanic or driving them to town to get a tow truck. Eventually the couple finds themselves imprisoned, because the motel owners have secret plans for them.SPOILER ALERT: Naturally the two plotlines--Jack’s search for his roots, and the couple’s predicament--merge, but only in a superficial way. The couple’s plotline is basically “Psycho" meets “The Most Dangerous Game", and it isn’t even close to the quality of either one. The motel owners’ intentions are easily guessed, long before the reveal.This novel is the latest in the long, popular Jack Reacher series, and it works fine as a standalone. It’s well-written, but, as previously mentioned, darned boring.

I’ve read them all and this one seems to be written by someone else. By far the worst Reacher book.

On page one of this newest Jack Reacher, Child does two things so subtly you don't even realize their implications both within and outside of the series: First, he tells us, in no uncertain terms, that Reacher is "...more than six feet five...heavily built... not particularly good looking." Thus reminding us that he is NOT a very pretty dwarf despite what you may have seen in the cinema.Second; he sets in motion what APPEARS will be the starting off point of the next several books by having Jack the lad start to hitchhike across America,starting from Maine and, eventually, ending in San Diego CaliforniaOne guesses the hitch-hike premise will be used for a while based on the fact that, in this "first" episode he gets not much further than Laconia, NEW HAMPSHIRE!But, since he also gets into one of the best Reachers EVER, one can forgive his lack of forward momentum.Some of Child's best characters and a real sense of emotional truth and some truly hilarious (albeit, possibly for specialized knowledge and tastes) fun, make this a book that has REACHES new heightsIndeed, if you can accept the premise that, in this day and age ANYONE would stop for ANY hitch hiker (let alone one who looks nothing like a certain former Jerry McGuire) this is a very promising opening to later adventuresGene Barry would be proud!

I feel like sending it back for a refund. I've never read a novel of this genre that is this bad. The plot went nowhere from the start, seemed contrived to be unreal, not a bit cogent, led me through endless page turning for a development, was characterized by multiple pages of inane banter for dialogue obviously meant for filler to take up space, was endlessly repetitive in character development, and made me want to give it up halfway through. Author Child obviously cranked this out as a quickie - what a lot of writers are criticized for doing now - taking advantage of Reacher fans to faithfully buy it. (Do these writers have deadlines to keep the novels coming? It seems like it.) I won't even donate this to the book room at the mobile home park where I live except with a warning in front how bad it is. I kept going huh? What? When does this turn into something? It never did, right to the end. It reads like a model how to write a grade 'D' novel. What kind of editing let this pass except for an assembly line crank-em-out policy? It was extremely unethical of Child to take such advantage of his prior reputation and to betray his spoiled and faithful following just for another quick publication and fast buck.

4.5 StarsI’ll admit I’ve never heard of this author but that cover had my attention. Then I read the blurb and I was hooked. Then I read the first few pages and then guess what, I kept turning those pages. I didn’t know what to expect but it sure was more that what I thought.The author gives us Livia, a seventeen year old who has just lost her twin brother, Jasper. Ok, we’re dealing with death but really there’s so much more than her brother’s death that she is/has to deal with. I can see why her coping skills are so out of control and it’s issues that many families and households are battling everyday. It may sound strange but it was hard to see her on her road to self destruction. Why you ask? 1). You can see the pain she’s suffering (and there is a lot she’s dealing with). 2.) I also love when a character has it in them to speak out. To act out. To get it out. I felt if she doesn’t bottle it up and just accept it then hopefully those demons will be faced sooner rather than later but it wasn’t easy to see the actions she was taking to ease her pain. I would hate to see someone pretend and then years later realize it was never ok or fine. 3.) While she was coping in her own way she was also struggling with trying to not do the things she was doing in the first place. I loved that as messed up as she was we saw what people really do....they try to justify their behavior. The author gives us a character that we can relate to, a character that you’re rooting for, a character with fight and determination and a character so flawed that you might even see a piece of you in them. This book even had me in tears. It made me think of my own children, it made me think of others fighting their demons, it made me think of families struggling with death and so much more. It just made me think. It made me think of how cruel this world is and how scary it can be. But, it also made me think that if were lucky the right right are in our life or come into our life. Lucky for Livia, she was surrounded by those even if she didn’t see it at the moment.I loved that Livia had such a witty best friend in Cao. I loved that she stood by her and never gave up. Then there’s Daniel, a transfer from the UK who was facing his own struggles and was someone that could connect with Livia on another level others couldn’t. Simon was her brother’s best friend who was struggling just as much as Livia and was battling his own wars. This was a hard book for me to read because it was so personal. How alcoholism affects lives, and how violence and loss changes lives is simply a tough and emotional subject. I can also attest to the fact that loved ones who have passed give us messages if we are open to receiving them. It is nice to read this book as it reminds us we are not alone in life struggles.

I’ve written and erased the first sentence of my review six times. This was not always an easy book to read and I can only imagine how difficult it was to write. But, even though there were so many heartbreaking moments throughout the story, the hope and courage of the human spirit shines. I am glad I read this beautiful book and thank Jennifer Bailey for persevering when it would have been so tempting to give up writing this story.

This book is powerful! Written in a realistic voice that drew me in and wouldn't let me go, I read it quickly. You won't regret reading this....I know I don't! This is a realistic look at how alcohol pulls someone into its grasp and helped me better understand those that I love who are alcoholics.

Good story. A bit drawn out and long winded. It tried to cover to many topics at once... sexuality, alcoholism, death, grief, drunk driving, ghosts and teen pregnancy. I probably left some out. The love story between Livia and Daniel was too saccharine. I got that he was British and definitely could do without the over explanation of his accent.

This book was full of some serious truths about life. The reader travels through the main characters grief confronting emotions and situations we all have to deal with in our lives: addiction, grief, love, and hope. I read this book in 1 night and am so completely grateful for experiencing it. One of the realest works of fiction I have ever read. Truly resonated in my soul.

This was an emotional read for me. Not a snotty ugly cry but a book that made me FEEL. I felt like Jasper was my brother. This author told a beautiful story and I will look to read more from her in the future.

I was gifted this book during a time of dealing with grief and anxiety . I’m so glad this book came into my life . It described everything I felt and how I was trying to deal with my emotions . I highly recommend this book . If your dealing with grief this book will hit you right in the gut . It’s a great read regardless if your dealing with loss or not . I look forward to my next JLB book.

The OBG Classics edition published September 11, 2017, claims to be "the new translation." But IF it is somehow new -- and, by the way, no translator is identified -- what exactly has been translated? What is new about it? It is still written in the difficult-to-understand Middle English Chaucer used, and apart from spelling (or misspelling?) "his" as "hise" in line-1 [see NOTE at end] and throwing in some extra commas, this is pretty much the standard version. It is handsomely formatted and has an active TOC, but no introduction, no clarifications of archaic words, nothing but the seemingly original Middle English text. Calling itself "the new translation" strongly suggests this has been translated into easier-to-understand Modern English, but such is not the case here. Chaucer certainly rates 5-stars, but I have deducted one for the misrepresentation.FYI: An excellent Modern English version will be found in the Kindle Store for $.99 by A. S. Kline.NOTE: The first line normally reads: "Whan that Aprill with his shoures soote...." The words "shoures" and "soote" are each two syllables in Middle English pronunciation; thus the entire line rightly has the number of accented syllables Chaucer intended. If "his" (a one-syllable word) were improperly changed to "hise" (turning it into a two-syllable word, pronounced his-uh) -- as is done here -- that adds an unintended and, therefore, unacceptable extra syllable. I have to assume this is merely a typo; but how many other such errors are contained herein?

If you are going to read The Canterbury Tales, this is the way to go. The Middle-English may seem intimidating at first, but it is easier than one might think to sound out and understand. Of course, the annotation helps quite a bit too. These tales and their frame perfectly capture medieval life with it's lively characters and various settings. Ranging from poetic diversions, to dramatic, to adventures, all the the way to gruesome fables, and plenty of very funny (and memorable) bawdy humor. This earthy group of classic stories has something for everyone. The modern translation is also worth having as a companion, but this fine paperback is the one for authenticity.

Let's get this clear at the start: This is a review of Jill Mann's edition of the Canterbury Tales in its Kindle version. (It's a shame that Amazon can't distinguish between different editions of the classics when posting reviews! -- hint!) About the Tales themselves, I'll say only that they are both a classic and a blast, and if you can handle the Middle English, you have to read them in that language. Jill Mann's editorial work is smart and thorough, too. The print edition is a bargain at the price -- again, if you're OK reading Middle English. The Kindle edition, though was a little clumsy to use -- though, to be fair, I don't see how all the glosses and notes could have been presented better in a e-book. Wait, yes I can. The glosses on individual words and expressions are easy to find; the more extensive notes, which are very valuable, are not. It shouldn't have been hard to add a marginal symbol to reference a Note. Hence it's only four stars, not five. But it may well be the best e-book version on the market.

Here is a brief synopsis.At the Tabard Inn, a tavern in Southwark, near London, the narrator joins a company of twenty-nine pilgrims. The pilgrims, like the narrator, are traveling to the shrine of the martyr Saint Thomas Becket in Canterbury. The narrator gives a descriptive account of twenty-seven of these pilgrims, including a Knight, Squire, Yeoman, Prioress, Monk, Friar, Merchant, Clerk, Man of Law, Franklin, Haberdasher, Carpenter, Weaver, Dyer, Tapestry-Weaver, Cook, Shipman, Physician, Wife, Parson, Plowman, Miller, Manciple, Reeve, Summoner, Pardoner, and Host. (He does not describe the Second Nun or the Nun’s Priest, although both characters appear later in the book.) The Host, whose name, we find out in the Prologue to the Cook’s Tale, is Harry Bailey, suggests that the group ride together and entertain one another with stories. He decides that each pilgrim will tell two stories on the way to Canterbury and two on the way back. Whomever he judges to be the best storyteller will receive a meal at Bailey’s tavern, courtesy of the other pilgrims.I won't go into detail about all the tales that are told except to say that I found them witty, entertaining, and thoughtful.

This is very reasonably priced ( 45 - 50$ ) but it is intended for the lower level architectural drafting courses just the same.
