I loved this book. I love all of Foner's books.This one is not set on Union Station or in that universe. This one is a different story.But there is a dog. I love the dog. All of the characters are great.There's no fighting, except for one tiny bit that hardly counts, but I found the story exciting anyway.
A very funny, light read about AI observers trying to prepare a path for Earth to join the rest of the universe while being upstaged by some hucksters from outer space. Of course the AI are at risk of being contaminated by earthlings (human kids are sooooo cute!) and the alien con artists are making things way too complicated. Hope there is a sequel. I want to hear more about the carbon paper resolution.
The book introduces the reader to a very benign galactic community. The earth characters are a joy to follow and introduce us to the possibility that human skillsets and intelligence is, good enough for employment with a little off-the-shelf training. The main character is a little by the book but with the willing help of it's team and friends, doesn't stand a chance of being starchy and introspective for long.Loved the read, very highly recommend.
This book gave me a good feeling. It wasn't profound, although I think I could have found some funny social commentary reading between the lines. The main characters, the primary players, were all fun and funny.There's Spot, the dog. Spot, we are led to believe, is like any dog--cute, funny, and needing lots of attention. But Spot is smart, too. At least as smart as the AI aliens.Oops. Did I mention AI? Artificial Intelligence? A lot of the characters in this book appear human, but that's only because they're wearing human suits. They're all AIs. They solve problems for the humans, and all the while, they evaluate whether humans are ready to join their space federation. Since they're wearing human suits that have gender, they start experiencing male / female attraction for each other.Then there's eBeth. She's a teenager who changes her hair color every few days. She's smart. She skips school. Oops. Is that smart? How are things going to work out for eBeth after she meets Mark, the AI, and attaches herself to him as her guardian?The AIs are on earth temporarily. How will the humans who have grown dependent upon them fare after the AIs depart for other planets? Be prepared to have fun answering this and other questions as you read through this fun book.
This was a really fun near-future story about alien AIs secretly watching Earth to determine whether we qualify for galactic membership. Others have done this basic story. No one has put such humor and wild-eyed FUN into the story. If you like Foner's EarthCent series with ambassador Kelly, you will LOVE the Turing Test. And its surprise twists towards the end.
I truly enjoyed this book and look forward to a sequel! The characters and story line are very entertaining! Who needs all that violence, sex, and foul language?!! E.M. Foner has certainly proven that it’s not required for telling a great story! He has quite literally become my favorite author!Be sure to also check out his “Union Station†series! It is outstanding!!!
Although it is billed as the start of a new series, this story feels like an extension of the Union Station universe: a prequel occurring while earth was being evaluated for inclusion in the Stryx-network. On the good side, the characters are likeable and the plot is entertaining. The downside is that the humanoid robots, through whom we experience it all, not only seem human, but have foibles, feelings, and internal viewpoints that are indistinguishable from human, even to the degree of “male†and “female†robots not just acting, but truly reacting per human stereotypes of the two sexes. So, for me, there was a continual low-level discord between what the main characters were said to be and what they were. Having them be robots rather than slightly enhanced humans or humanoid aliens was superfluous. That said, I’ll probably continue to read this series due to my admiration for the author’s Union Station stories. Perhaps this new series will grow on me with time.
Foner's writing style shines in this wonderful group of characters! I hope to see more of them. His cast of Artificial Intelligence characters suffers from the same foibles as his human and alien protagonists. I discovered his Union Station series several years ago and have been a faithful follower. If you are already an Earth Cent fan you'll like this book and if not it's not too late to start. Enjoy!!
