Review

“[A manual] for those of us laboring to produce expository prose: nonfiction books, journalistic articles, memorandums, business letters. The conservatism of his advice pushes you to consider audience and occasion, so that you will understand when to follow convention and when you can safely break it. When someone offers you good advice, you would do well to take it.” (John E. McIntyre Baltimore Sun)"The Chicago Guide is not what I expected, but it is what I had hoped for. There are a lot of grammar books available and a lot of sharply focused books on specific items . . . but there aren’t many, if any, that are comprehensive and accessible. The Chicago Guide certainly is accessible and comprehensive." (An American Editor)“This grammar book doesn’t shoot and leave. It stays with you.” (Hamodia)“Writers, copy editors, and students seeking advice or explanations of the conventions of standard literary English will find definitive, clearly expressed rulings in The Chicago Guide to Grammar, Usage, and Punctuation. . . . Essential." (Choice)“Garner’s guide is well-organized, logical, comprehensive, up-to-date, and comes alongside the reader in his or her search for clear as well as correct language (the second is not always the first).” (Reference Reviews)“At last, everything I had long been looking for in a single volume presented logically and explained adequately in terms that any interested reader can not only follow but also make his or her own with a little due diligence and old-fashioned intellectual elbow grease.” (Thomas R. Claire Publishing Research Quarterly)“A grammar companion such as this one to CMS and an authoritative dictionary would establish language authority across company texts. Therefore, this work is highly recommended.” (Technical Communication)“A thoroughgoing, clear explication of the traditional categories of grammar, expanded from his summary in The Chicago Manual of Style and a fit companion to Garner’s Modern English Usage.” (John E. McIntyre, author of The Old Editor Says)“Garner is the greatest writer on grammar and usage that this country has ever produced.  This book will be an instant classic.” (David Yerkes, Columbia University)

This book is essentially an expansion of Garner's usage chapter from the CHICAGO MANUAL OF STYLE with a distinct emphasis on correctness rather than the style, workflow, and formatting covered in CMOS. And that's a good thing, as it focuses on helping writers at all levels. Less pedantic (in my opinion, anyway) than GARNER'S MODERN ENGLISH USAGE, and more accessible as a result, it follows a similar structure to that of CMOS. Some may find GARNER'S MODERN ENGLISH USAGE hard to follow because the head entries are alphabetical, and for those readers this book will seem more logical as it is grouped by typical subjects (e.g., prepositions, clauses, subjects, verbs). Other huge selling points are a 100-page subchapter titled Troublesome Words and Phrases, a 32-page Word Index, and an 88-page Select Glossary (I wonder what the Unabridged Glossary looks like). All of these are great aids for less-experienced writers or those who find certain indexing styles particularly vexing (nearly always the fault of the author or indexer, not the reader, by the way, and I'm not being sarcastic in this particular instance). One reason I like Garner's other book is its use of relevant and user-friendly examples. CMOS is not always so generous with such examples, though it is improving. The CHICAGO GUIDE TO GRAMMAR, USAGE, AND PUNCTUATION uses numerous examples in every section, and in many cases it divides them into "good usage" and "bad usage" categories to show both right and wrong variations. I find this much more helpful in explaining usage to others and it should aid comprehension for many readers. Garner also uses word-frequency data to show the prevalence of certain word forms and their lexicological competitors. This book is an excellent reference choice for writers at all levels (editors also will find good examples to clarify usage for themselves and clients). And a word for those who've heard that Garner is prescriptivist—he only seems prescriptivist for those rules that good writers do and should follow to ensure that readers take them seriously. He often points to certain uses that just don't matter so much anymore (e.g., he notes that "hopefully" is still avoided by good writers, but that the differentiation is likely lost on most readers and therefore not so important). And in case you wondered whether all those actors who pronounce "homage" as "OH-MAUGE' " and "often" as "OFT' EN" were just being pretentious—they are (of course I'm biased—otherwise, why would I write a silly review?).And finally (I presume you are cheering), at least Garner had the knowledge and good sense to provide a proper title for his book, unlike those numerous ones calling "usage" "grammar" and "grammar" "usage" without any hint of shame.

Absolutely love this as a companion to the Chicago Manual of Style. It's clear, concise, and pretty easy to navigate, and it offers supplemental examples that the CMS does not. I'm extremely happy with this and the CMS as a style manual. Match it with a good dictionary like Random House and a solid thesaurus, and you'll never need the internet again.

Here is a welcome extension volume to Garner's acclaimed Modern English Usage; together they make an invaluable source of articulate, authoritative, convincing (and witty) discussions of many of the problems that writers and editors of quality prose will encounter.

Garner’s usage guides are invaluable, but it’s difficult to figure out who would want this book. Lovers of grammar will be frustrated, and anyone trying to learn the complexities of grammar and punctuation will be misled. For one thing, Garner muddles the terminology. On the very page (165) on which he defines a clause as “a grammatical unit that contains a subject, a finite verb, and any complements that the verb requires,” he presents as an example of a subordinate clause the word-group “despite my father’s warning not to” (which is a phrase, not a clause, because it lacks a finite verb). Discussing the bracketed word-group “we’re making progress slowly but surely” on page 146, he claims that “but joins two adverbs within an adverbial clause,” but that word-group is an independent clause, not an adverbial dependent clause. Garner doesn’t always have a sure grasp of the parts of speech, either. He classifies “through” in the sentence “I’d like to see the problem through” as a preposition (page 139), but “through” is an adverb in that instance. For Garner, terms change meaning from page to page. On page 127, he defines an adverb as a “word”; on page 85, he illustrates his statement that “it is now widely acknowledged that adverbs sometimes justifiably separate the to from the principal verb” with the sentence “[T]hey expect to more than double their income next year.” “More than” doesn’t satisfy his definition of an adverb as a single word; it’s a phrasal adverb, which he defines elsewhere. Explanations are opaque (from page 143: “The conjunction joins a clause. . . .” Hunh?). Examples don’t always relate to the rules they are intended to illustrate. On page 375, the rule “Use a hyphen to connect the parts of a phrasal adjective—that is, a phrase whose words function together to modify a noun” is illustrated with the sentence “Being competitive, risk-taking, status-conscious, dedicated, single-minded, persevering—it can make all the difference to success,” in which there’s no noun for those phrasal adjectives to modify. Although the book has the imprimatur of the University of Chicago Press, the discussion of punctuation trashes rules in The Chicago Manual of Style, including 6.20 and 6.45 (rules identical to those enforced at The New Yorker). The section on punctuation is in fact the weakest in the book. Even though each chapter discusses common misuses of punctuation marks, the chapter on the slash does not even address the most controversial and disputed use of the slash—to mean “and” rather than “or.” (The discussion of the slash in his usage books is much more helpful.) The chapter on colons never explicitly states that an independent clause must almost always precede a colon. (And he discusses only one misuse of the colon, though in his usage books he discusses four misuses.) One can go on and on. Bryan Garner is a whiz, no question, but this book needs a redo. Buy one of his usage books instead. They’re a better bargain, they’re more comprehensive, and they’re brilliant!

I'm an author and needed some indepth grammar guidelines. The Chicago Guide to Grammar Usage satisfied that need.

I use this is a companion to the Chicago Manual of Style, and define my whole department's grammatical usage by this book. It's the one to go to.

Anything by Bryan A. Garner is excellent if you're interested in grammar and the meaning of words.

An excellent accompaniment to style books, such as the Chicago Manual of Style, and also to Garner's Modern English Usage.

I enjoy historical fiction and romance. These characters lack depth, and the setting is less than historically accurate. Disappointing

Admired the courage to withstand the towns sentiments. Got to know the girls and how they changed their lives.

I enjoy clean western historical romances that highlight the plight of those who set out to settle the West - and these fit exactly into that category. The first young woman, Carrie, starts the series. She's a mail order bride headed to California that loses her nerve when she gets to Kansas. She decides to stay and work as a waiter-girl at Stewart House. She makes friends there and several of these friends become the brides of the books that follow.Beverly is Carrie’s sister and took her place at the restaurant. Stewart House is using frozen steaks instead of local meat, which she can't understand. She decides to get involved and makes big changes!Annie has worked at Stewart House for a year. She initially came to meet her fiancee halfway, but he never showed up. She loves Stewart House. A farmhand comes in and they realize he was the no-show fiancee.Rita supervises the staff at Stewart House and has been there the longest. She wants marriage and a family and decides a mail-order husband is the best way to get them.Tessa is a waiter girl who hear about the newspaper from sisters Wendy and Emmile. Tessa responds to an ad and writes to a local man. Tessa wants love and marriage - and to keep her job as well.Emmie doesn't want marriage, she'd actually love to open a library. Her friend catches her glancing at the newspaper and decides to do some matchmaking for her. She gets an unexpected letter from Mr. Cline, the lawyer in town, and writes back to him.I liked these stories, all of them. Because they're short, the stories developed more quickly than seemed reasonable, though I'd have loved the author to have fleshed them out a little more so the romances would've developed a little more naturally. (Most of these women were engaged and married as quickly as their second meeting, which was pretty unbelievable to me.) If she'd done that, I'd be giving these 5 stars all the way around.* I received a copy of this book for review consideration.

I received this book set for review consideration, this is my honest and voluntary review. Each of these women in this six book boxed set are strong, caring and fall in love. Each faces challenges that they must overcome to find themselves and the love ofTheir lives. It would be so easy to just tell you everything about each book however that wouldactually cheat you out of the pleasure of finding out everything they each go through.I think you would enjoy that much more than being told what to except. What I can do for you is to highly recommend this book set to you. I know you willenjoy it as much as I have. So do yourself a favor and get this book set.

I received this Arc for review consideration. This is the stories of some innovated, courageous young woman who want to make a life for themselves at a restaurant that has the best steaks around. The train brings customers from all over to try their steaks. The ingenuity and perseverance of these young woman is unshakable and they might just find love along the way. This is such a wonderful series. If you like to read stories with heart and Happy endings and just pure fun to read this is the one for you.

I thoroughly enjoyed these stories. Charity Phillips seemed to write mail order brides with a fresher voice. I was getting tired of reading mail order brides, but these stories really held my interest. I did enjoy how these brides knew each other. Plus it was nice to have the now married ladies in later stories. They are all good stories. The brides each have their own personalities. Freshly written stories that hold your interest. I highly recommend this book.

I enjoyed some of these stories more than others. Loved how independent some of the women were, and their struggles on life. Should they be independent, at a time when it was looked down upon for a woman to stand on her own, or should they follow their heart and marry? Even if its what they were fighting against the whole time? Just the message of strength and courage given in these pages, its inspiring! I received an ARC of this book.

Working at the elite Stewart House was a goal for some. They made close friendships, some closer than others. Some stories more interesting than others. They had interesting rules. I received this ARC copy for review consideration.

#480,707 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Lots to like about this novel, but there were some quirks which sort of ruined it for me and made it seem unrealistic. So, this is supposed to take place in Corpus Christi. Texas is very hot and humid. Boys in Texas play football, or soccer, if you were Mexican. All kids go to gym class, especially in high school. If you went swimming at a beach, you would have to wear a swim suit. My point is that there is no way a boy in Texas, especially South Texas, would be wearing a long sleeve shirt all the time. He would have take it off at least once a day for gym class at school. No one swims wearing a long sleeve shirt. No one would be bicycling around town in humid Texas wearing a long sleeve shirt, unless you were a Mormon missionary, perhaps. Some things in this story just did not add up. Maybe the author should have made it take place in Virginia, not Texas. Even the food was wrong. No one eats fish and chips in Corpus Christie. People eat fish tacos. I like what the novel was trying to accomplish, it just didn't ring true for the scenario. It just didn't seem real to me, since I lived in South Texas. It was as if the author just picked a place, but he had never actually been there himself.

I've read this book several times and it made me cry every single time I did. This is one of my favorites books, even though I'm not into sentimental books or movies. This is a great book if you're going to a sort of depression, even if it's not Diego's sort of/cause of depression.Vidas is basically taking a roll of a psychologist/therapist towards you through the book without you even noticing it.Some people said something about some parts of the story being dull because of the ocean and the shark... *sighs* Symbolism, guys, symbolism...*SPOILER*Him being in the middle of the ocean symbolizes him being alone in the depression, anger, sadness, etc. due to the fact that he had to keep quiet about the rape. The shark symbolizes the shark tooth... You know? When he escaped his feelings through self-harm (that could've killed him if he wasn't careful).Put the shark and the ocean together and you get his life and maybe even a foreshadowing of his near-death experience.*SPOILER OVER*This story is not for everyone, obviously. If you think self-harm is "stupid" or a way to "seek attention," you WILL NOT be able to connect with the main character. This is the only book I've read from this author and I've been thinking about more of his stuff, but it doesn't seem like my thing. Plus, I don't have the time anymore...If you like sentimental books, I highly recommend this one. This one is in my top 5 favorites. :)

If you are looking to become a Juvenile Probation Officer or even a counselor... I HIGHLY recommend this book. After reading this book I guarantee you will become much more aware in general. About your life and others including clients. Here and there you want to think, “ GET TO THE POINT...” but realistically no one openly says what they are think or what is going on in their life... therefore this book keeps you guessing, and allows you to place yourself in the child’s shoes.

Bait was one of the easiest, quickest reads I have had in awhile. I sat down for a moment, and before I knew it, it was over. For a story revolving around sexual abuse, it went down rather smoothly. And while I wasn't in tears or emotional distress, the story was believable, the characters endearing and real. In some ways, it felt strange to take such a tale so lightly, but it is the most appropriate way to address such issues with kids. As a teacher who works with severally abused and neglected children, I was thrilled to have found a novel that I could use at times for students dealing with similar issues. As always, Alex Sanchez's writing is always a joy to read.

I've read all of Alex Sanchez's other books and this one was excellent, as I have come to expect from him. I'm glad that the main character is not gay as I think that would box Mr. Sanchez in too much. Christopher Rice started out writing about gay main characters but on his third book the protagonist was straight with gay supporting characters. I think this is very important if the books are going to reach a larger audience. This is the second time Mr. Sanchez has chosen to write about a straight person and given him a gay character in a supporting role. I think he does this very successfully.

This book was absolutely amazing. The story of Diego and all that he had to overcome was so powerful, and it even helped me through a few of my own problems. It starts out with Diego punching a gay guy for looking at him funny... but don't get turned off by this! It plays a very important part in the plot. Why exactly is Diego so afraid of homosexuality? Well it had to do with his stepdad, Mac, who molested him. This has become my favorite book, and I would highly recommend it to anybody, but especially to those who have suffered through sexual abuse.

What an amazing piece of art.Bait takes you on the journey of healing for a very troubled young teenager. Diego struggles with his past and what happened to him. The author unfolds this process of healing with such passion and courage, that one feels Diego pain right in ones heart. You are right with him on the journey, like a silent companion. The characters are perfectly written and developed - and with such a depth, that they feel just real. Especially Diego with his deep hidden pain.If you like to read about the healing process of troubled teenager, who has been repeatedly abused, you will like this book - and yes, there is a happy ending :-).

Great easy read. The connection the author made with the main character and the reader was emotional and left great expectations to learn from.

From School Library Journal

Grade 5–9—This slim volume is clearly intended as a stop-gap product to tide eager readers over until the final volume of the series is released. In addition to three previously unreleased short stories about Percy and his companions, it also includes such filler as interviews with the same, along with word games, portraits of some of the Gods and their half-blood offspring, and the inevitable sneak preview of Book 5. The short stories are the meat of this book, and are filled with Riordan's trademark anachronistic humor. The first one puts Percy and his enemy Clarisse, the daughter of Ares, on the same team as she tries to retrieve her father's chariot, which has been hijacked as a prank by her two immortal brothers. The second story relates an incident that occurred during one of Camp Half-Blood's infamous Capture the Flag games, when Charlie Beckendorf, the camp counselor for Hephaestus, is captured by a horde of giant, poisonous ants, and has to be rescued with the help of a mechanical dragon. The final story brings Percy, Thalia, and Nico, the son of Hades, together at the request of Persephone to help retrieve Hades's stolen sword, the loss of which could be deadly to the Gods, and the resolution of which forms a lead-up to the probable events of Book 5. Despite the fact that this is more of a marketing package than anything else, the quality of and interest in the three stories likely justifies its purchase.—Tim Wadham, St. Louis County Library, MO Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. As a huge fan of Percy Jackson, I was so excited to continue the adventure with The Heroes of Olympus. After reading this book, the first in the series, I'm neither satisfied nor disappointed. It was nice to dive back in to the world of Camp Half-Blood but I just couldn't get too involved with the new characters like I did with Percy and his crew. I also purchased the second book to try and get more into it, that book will determine whether I continue the series or not.As for if I would recommend this book, I'd say it's worth a try. :-)

I love a good book. My favorites are usually modern day stories about normal people with a little bit of magic thrown in to make it interesting. I originally started reading the Percy Jackson series because my granddaughter liked the movie. So I bought her the series and we read at least a chapter or two every time we spend a few hours together. My girl does most of the reading and I sort of explain the parts or words she doesn't understand. We've almost finished all of the Percy Jackson series. And I must confess, since I read just a bit faster, I've moved onto the Lost Hero series. It started a bit slower than the other books. But as I read the story I found myself wondering how it was going to play out. Greek mythology is just as fascinating as Roman mythology. I like that they're being mixed together and how these series are overlapping. The message I see in both series is one of honesty, and friendship and trust. The concept of right and wrong should be installed into young people at an early age. Age appropriate explanations of actions and consequences. These books have helped my granddaughter, who is just about 8 years old, to learn to think about what will happen once she has said or done something. I'm thankful there are stories that have captured her interest and attention. She is also beginning to understand that the lessons these books are helping her to learn will help her throughout her life!! That is the best compliment I can give to any author and his/her stories.

Rick Riordan starts another great story! I am a great fan of Percy Jackson, and was excited to see a new series. The author introduces new characters but has not changed his style of getting you to know and care about them, until they become real people to the reader. Too many dismiss books nowadays as copies or derivatives of older well known works. In that light , everything can be considered a copy of something else. I always approach a book or series to see if it can grab my attention and invest me in the story or characters. Rick Riordan has not disappointed me yet.

I really like Rick Riordan's books, starting with Percy Jackson series. I like that he uses mythology and humour in his books. I have always loved mythology and this is a great series to get my sons reading. In fact, it was my oldest son and my sister who got me into Riordan's books. This is the second book of the Kane's Series/Egyptian Mythology. This is written in first person from each sibling's point of view (POV). Each chapter is a different POV. Some writers have a hard time writing different voices for their characters and when they try this the characters sound the same. However, Riordan does a good job of keeping Sadie and Carter's voice distinct.I bought this one to replace the one that disappeared. It has been awhile since I read the Kane Series.

If I can say nothing else about Rick Riordan (RR) I will say he is without a doubt an entertaining storyteller no matter what age you are. While his Percy Jackson series are still my favorites I enjoyed this book more than The Red Pyramid. The best thing about this book is that there are more kids. It just makes for a little more humor when you have kids interacting with other kids instead of adults. Now that Sadie and Carter are helping to train some new kids at Brooklyn house there is rooms for some new and interesting characters.-- “Felix believed that the answer to every problem involved penguins; but it wasn't fair to birds, and I was getting tired of teleporting them back home. Somewhere in Antarctica, a whole flock of Magellanic penguins were undergoing psychotherapy.”Carter and Sadie need to find a way to awaken Ra if they are going to beat Apophis (god of Chaos) but he has been missing for quite awhile and they will need to find some ancient artifacts to help them.RR adds his own spin on Egyptian mythology and ‘The Gods’ that is entertaining, informative and interesting. I always feel like I’m learning about the culture as well as being entertained by the story. There were all kinds of new gods and obstacles to deal with along the way and Sadie and Carter have to prove even to the gods that want Ra to return they are strong enough to complete the task.I love the sibling relationship between Cater and Sadie. They antagonize and provoke each other but they are also the firt to stand up and fight for their sibling if they are ever in danger. Sadie’s PoV chapters were my favorites but that is probably because she is so snarky and gets to have most of the funny lines.- “Our camels plodded along. Katrina tried to kiss, or possibly spit on Hindenburg, and Hindenburg farted in response. I found this a depressing commentary on boy-girl relationships.”Carter still feels responsible for Zia and has been trying to find her ever since he found out she was hidden away for her safety. But he might just be a little obsessed, so much so that he is seeing clues everywhere.- “Carter, not to be unkind," I said, "but the last few months you've been seeing messages about Zia everywhere. Two weeks ago, you thought she was sending you a distress call in your mashed potatoes." "It was a Z! Carved right in the potatoes!”There is always something happening with all the mini quests before the big one and I will say that Ra really wasn’t what I was expecting, which kinda made it all the better. Who said waking up a god would be easy never went looking for one with and evil Ice Cream vendor hot on their trail.Add in the hint of a blossoming romance between Sadie and Walt or Sadie and Anubus and this story has a little bit of everything. It is the cutest crush triangle I’ve read and I’m not sure which way I want it to go. All in all a fun and entertaining ride. Sure this is a MG book but it is just as fun for kids of all ages.If you haven’t read the Percy Jackson series I’d say read that first (so much better than the movies). But if you have might as well expand your RR mythology and add a little Egyptian to it.

I have all of the Taormina's books and this is one is okay, but it is not her best. I also own Swim Speed workouts. Too much of this book is spent underscoring why the reader should be focusing on the high elbow and less time really illustrating the drills to perfect it. Swim Speed Strokes is a great book because she provides great images to illustrate the technique along with the why... So my guess is that was intentional because that is exactly what you get in Swim Speed Workouts. The point is that buy both Swim Speed Workouts and Swim Speed Secrets.. If you are only going to buy one.. then Swim Speed Workouts is the better buy.

I am a 51 year old Master's Swimmer. I swam competitively in the 70's and 80's and then took about 30 years off swimming. Back in the 80's we learned the "S" pull; when I came back to swimming 7-8 years ago I found things had changed and now it was all about "early vertical forearm". I tried really hard for years to modify my stroke but could never get it. In the meantime I was getting very frustrated as my swimming seemed to be getting worse despite my efforts. My daughter's swim coach recommended this book. I read it cover to cover a number of times. I found some of the stuff in the beginning a bit hard to follow - but the pictures are really great. (especially if you are a visual person). I worked on the principles hard and tried to incorporate some of the recommended drills but not every day (hard since I swim with a team). It took about 6 months but all of a sudden one day it just clicked and the results were stunning. Once I got the catch right, I immediately dropped 3-4 seconds per 100 with less effort. Seriously. Overnight. When does that ever happen? Its gotten me so energized and excited about swimming again that I've entered my first meet in 2 years. So, in summary great book and I highly recommend it ! Have patience as it may take some time but once you get it right the results are dramatic.

I am a back of the pack triathlete and picked up this book to help with my swim times based on Amazon reviews. I had been doing various total immersion drills over a few years, but have always been a slow swimmer. I just read this book yesterday and went swimming today. My 100 meter time went down 15 secs without even doing any of the drills yet, just by focusing on "feeling the water"! (mind you, I'm still over 2 minutes per 100) Also, my chronically sore shoulder felt great after my swim, using the stroke adjustments recommended in this book. I'm very excited to follow Sheila's plan to build up strength and continue to improve. I found the book an enjoyable read and very clear. Can't wait for my next race!

I have been stuck at 2:00/100m. (Don't laugh there are plenty of us out there.) It didn't matter what I did and to be honest I don't have the time to see a coach on a coaches' schedule. After reading all of the things I am messed up on, haha, I got it. The light bulb went off and I went back to real basics, floating, sculling then working stroke. I an now down to 1:45 and getting faster. I will never be the fastest, but I am no longer at the back of the pack. Movin' up!!

I have read several different books/systems to improve my swimming. I pick and chose from each. I learned more about the importance of the "catch" , tempo and several helpful drills. This information was not in the other books. Probably could have taught the techniques with fewer words, but an enjoyable and valuable read.

I’m still trying to learn all the ins and outs of the freestyle stroke and found this book helpful. It explained the catch in better, easier to understand terminology than I’ve found anywhere else. I liked the numbers for guidelines on items like DPS and stroke rate that I plan on using to review my progress. Only wish this book would have some full workout programs in it instead of a list of drills.

This is my very first book about swimming technique. So I never had idea what kind of information (technique) I can get from this book...I was shocked about such a explanation of mechanical movement in the water!! This book gave me a lot of new insight and technique to improve my swimming. I strongly recommend to beginners, but even master swimmers, too.

I'm beating a dead horse here a little bit with the fourteenth consecutive five-star review, but it has to be said - this book is about as good a swim instruction book as it gets. A coach would be better, of course, but beyond that, this book teaches you how to swim freestyle like the pros do.I literally read this book in one sitting from beginning to end (there's a lot of pictures), and the next time I got in the water, I could swim faster and longer than ever before. The high-elbow catch technique is tiring at first, but it allows you far more strokes in a given time period, and really engages your entire body more than when your elbow sinks. My lats were on fire after a 1000-yard workout. It's hard to say all that much about the actual contents of the book. It teaches the high-elbow crawl stroke, and that's it. It has a few drills, but it's all stuff you've probably heard of before (catch-up, sculling, etc.). But unless you have a swim coach who's already taught you how to swim the perfect freestyle stroke, this book is a must-read.
