I bought it, and when I compiled the first program I was excited, but then I found some serious typo's that kept me from following his chapters. He refers to some files which just don't even exist on the CD, "makefile" was one such file, and this file was to be used to create all subsequent files in the book. I finally thought I had figured out how to compile his code and then I got linker errors. Maybe there is a library I needed to include or something, but he didn't explain anything about setting up Visual C++. So all in all I never got past chapter 3. Sad but true, I think the author had done a good job, maybe I needed something a bit more fundamental.

Generally when I read reviews on Amazon.com that simply say "This book is horrible, don't waste your money", I tend to ignore them. I find that probably half the people posting the reviews don't know how to program anyway, and so when they see a few lines of code they freak out and automatically decide the book sucks. That's the reason I bought this book, because not many of the reviews actually backed up their complaints with valid arguments. I have a slightly higher opinion of the book than most of the other reviewers, but I still find the book to be fairly bad. Specifically, the author has got to have some of the worst general programming skills I've ever seen. Maybe I'm spoiled because I'm a professional in the games industry, where code is usually very clean, efficient, and professional looking, but the code in this book is just absolute garbage. Every time I look at his code I get sick to my stomach. Some of the stupidest things I've seen in this book include (but are not limited to), the following:1) The use a global "Info" object to describe the state of D3D and the window. Even though it's global, the author uses SetWindowLong() to attach it to the window "so that it's always accessible". I've never seen anything so ridiculous in my life.2) The use of static C functions ALL OVER THE PLACE. Not static class member functions, but plain old static C functions (not that the use of static member functions all over the place would be any better, but I don't think I've ever used a static C function in my life). In fact, the sole PURPOSE of declaring a non-member function static is so that it's not visible from any other file, so that you can use the same function name in other files. I really hope I don't need to explain why that's bad.4) The inconsistency used throughout the book. Sometimes return values are compared to D3DRM_OK, sometimes SUCCEEDED()/FAILED() is used. He may as well not indent his code at all either, because sometimes he indents line and sometimes he doesn't. All in all it's very inconsistent, and I've decided that I absolutely hate looking at his code. If I ever had to work with this guy I'd probably beat him with a 2x4 for making my life hell.5) The way in which he wrote the main windows message loop was probably the dumbest implementation I've seen. It was just downright silly.6) The use of the hPrevInstance parameter to WinMain(). Anybody who's ever done anything for windows knows that this parameter is always NULL under Win32.7) The way the code on the CD is COMPLETELY out of sync with the book. He uses code from the way later chapters very early on, and code from the early chapters later on, while the chapters mention nothing of this code. It's clearly not supposed to be there, and not alot of work was put into making sure the CD was correct.8) The way he wrote his CreateLight() function. Of all the bad programming habits I've found in this book, this one was just flat out absurd, and makes it blatantly obvious that he's never worked on anything high performance. There are 5 types of light, and he wanted to write a generic CreateLight() function that would create any of the 5 types, based on a parameter. So he decides to pass in a *STRING*, which was ASSUMED to be one of the following: "DIRECTIONAL", "SPOT", "POINT", "PARALLELPOINT", or "AMBIENT". Every time I think about this I laugh. I really don't think there's a more inefficient way to do this, especially considering that Direct3D already comes with an enum specifically for specifying the type of light to create.Now that I'm done ranting about this guy's pathetic ability to write C/C++ code, I guess I should say that he does give a fairly good explanation of *SOME* aspect of Direct3D. Not many, but some. As most people have said, most is pulled directly out of the SDK docs, verbatim. Not one changed word. Some of the stuff, however, is actually explained in a mediocre fasion.I'm going to finish reading this book because I've already bought it, but for everybody else who is considering buying it, please don't. There have GOT to be better books out there. I'm actually learning the material because I'm a good enough programmer to where I can figure out how to rework his trash into something neat, clean and efficient, but I would much rather have just purchased a book where it CAME neat, clean, and efficient.

Peter Kovachs book is the current best book for Direct 3D that is or has been published Period. I know, I have them all. If you can program in C at all and any familiarity with the Windows interface, this book can take you from beginner to highly capable Direct3D retained mode programmer.In addition, it covers sufficient advanced concepts and I/O to enable you to construct your own initial 3D game programs.It also has an intro to Direct3D retained mode, but it is not sufficient by itself to qualfy you as a retained or combined mode programmer. It is also out of date now as DirectX 6 and 7 include several enhancements.Sometimes it is necessary to re-read several times and to experiment in order to fully grasp what Peter is teaching you, but Direct3D is a monstrous and powerful beast (why do you think books with impressive titles like "DirectX Complete" skip talking about Direct3D completely) Main reason, D3D has more to it than the entire rest of DirectX put together, and they dont know how to use it either.I'm sure his new book Inside Direct3D will be even better, I have it on preorder.You want to program Direct3D. This book will get you started and give you some good tools to work with.

Literally half of this book was devoted to reprinting the interface methods for the various Direct3D COM objects. That aside, I would have been happy if the first half of the book had meaningful information. As it is, the author awakens us with a rather lengthy primer on the win32 displatch loop (day 1 on learning windows programming), and then immediately jumps into advanced 3D and Direct3D terminology without so much as a sentence to describe the term in most cases. There is a clear lack of continuity in this book regarding the level of material. The author goes into great detail on excruciatingly simple topics that any C programmer should know, and then flings you into a 1/8 presentation on some rather advanced 3d subject. There is nothing in between. I was not at all pleased with the lack of clear examples to explain his topics. He briefly flings some complex terms at you, and then provides a few lines of code that are out of context to help you understand. Unfortunately, he doesn't put anything together that works until the very end and then it contains much more code than his limited topics cover. I have read a couple of the other DirectX/3d books out there and found them to be vastly more useful and informative.

This book was very good for explaining what was needed to write a D3D Retained mode app. What Kovach explains, he does very well, but there are some things he just ignores. Unfortunately, some of what he ignores is his own code. You'll outgrow this book quickly and turn to MS's examples, but you'll get up to speed with D3D RM quicker than with just the SDK examples. Its a shame that there were several mistakes, mis-matched and extraneous code, and "black holes" (his collision detection code needs major work, and I couldn't port it out of his examples.)

I was encouraged to use dragon for writing as it is about three times faster than typing (and I'm a fast typist). Dragon is, however, a big and complex program that requires some definite understanding to use successfully. This book is an excellent guide to getting started and then a good clear reference when you find yourself forgetting some detail.

I really am pleased with the book ( I like the Dummies Series). I also love the Dragon Naturally speaking program. I boughtthe book to help me learn how to edit what i have dictated.It is very helpful.

It explained things clearly about the Dragon Speaking program; now I need to sit down and actually use the product! The book is well written, with lots of humor, which I always appreciate.

Very helpful book. I only wish it was written specifically for Mac. Nonetheless, I learned quite a bit and hope that transposing the hot keys to Mac will work efficiently. I have a feeling they will. It cleared up a lot of the mystery. Thank you.Frank Mileti

This is well and logically written. The chapters are a good tutorial and handy reference to specific topics. Good index.

After buying training your Dragon I decided to go with the Dragon naturally speaking for dummies and I found it to be jammed packed with a lot more information that could help anybody so it was well worth the money.

I thought this book was very helpful in many ways, but also thought it was a little to long and to much repeated statements. The book could have been made a little shorter. I would rebuy it.

It was nice to have a personal tutor. Even though the software comes with a tutorial this still gives further insight on the product.

Another great one from Carolyn Brown. A second chance romance for Loretta and her sexy ex-husband Jackson. Mistakes were made and Loretta didn't stay around to wait for an explanation. Now seventeen years later their daughter, Nona, is spending the summer at Lonesome Canyon Ranch with her father. Loretta showed up, unannounced, to spend six weeks there to convince Nona to come back to Oklahoma and go back to school. She has one more year of college and she will have her degree. But Nona wants to be a rancher. And sparks seem to be flying between Loretta and Jackson. Much will happen in those six weeks and you will just have to read the book to find out the path that is taken by all. Carolyn Brown's books never, ever disappoint.

This story won me over from the first page. It was fast paced, heart-warming, and very hilarious at times. These characters are all so likable and loveable, but they are also feisty, stubborn and very strong willed. The bantering between all of these characters was hilarious, but it almost made me want to start taking bets, as to who would end up winning the argument. I could feel that Texas heat, and I'm not talking about the weather. I don't know who was hotter; Nona and Travis, or Jackson and Loretta. Loved every single minute of this story, and can't wait for more.

Carolyn Brown is becoming another of my favorite writers. Love her writing style and she can put you right in the middle of the landscape. Texas romance filled with characters that are strong willed and I really liked that about the characters she writes about, I read through this book pretty quick as it's not very long but a very fun read. Give her a try. It takes place on a ranch during the hot Texas summer, you feel like you're right there bailing the hay with them melting away from the head!

When I saw the description for this I thought it might be like aMills and Boon type story I read years ago, not least because Loretta's return to her former marital home made it sound like she was re-entering enemy territory. Thankfully this was not the case. In saying that I liked the story, I have to admit that Princess Nona annoyed the cr@p out of me, with her telling her mother that ranching was what she was born to do. She clearly couldn't see herself having a time of being older and less nimble but maybe everyone is like that when they are twenty-something before life puts manners on them. I didn't care for the casual aspersions on Irish things, for example one of Loretta's friends complaining that her ex husband insisted that their child be given an Irish name because her family was of Latin American origin. Would the author (or indeed other authors) have so casually complained about a Hebrew name? However, this was just a small detail and on the whole I liked the book.

Enjoyable romance between the couple that always loved each other, despite divorcing. Jackson and "Tornado" Loretta Baily's daughter Nona is in love with Travis Calhoun and plans to quit college. As Nona has one more year to complete her degree, Loretta is determined that she finish school. Strong female and male characters, no drag down drama.Believable characters, dialogue and story line."Listen to the words of this song, Nona. This is our song from now on. This is how deep my love is for you. We'll be dancing to this song when we have grandchildren," he whispered."Honey, I hope when we are old we are listening to this song after a hot bout of sex, not dancing to it," she said."The potholes are so big you could lose an army rank in them.""Ezra's lane is like life--it's one hell of a rough ride," Jackson said."Don't go all philosophical on me.""Just talking about life, ma'am."I will re-read this book and always look forward to, pre-order when possible, new works by this author.

one of the worst written books I've read in a long time. totally predictable and unimaginative. The interactions of the characters were unbelievably immature. The only reason I finished it was because we were on a 10 day Caribbean cruise and I had nothing else to read!Don't waste your time on this one.

This cookbook literally has something for everyone! As you can see by the photos I am including -- none of this looks (or tastes!) like "diet food". So forget that this book's says "keto" on the cover. It is simply a cookbook of easy, amazingly yummy food -- from a variety of regions -- created by a reliable recipe author. If you're not keto, just add a starch and/or use regular sugar and you'll be all set.For the physical cookbook, it is a sturdy paperback, with pages of a good nice thickness making them very easy to turn.The recipes are well laid-out, clear and easy to read. The super-helpful sidebar gives you both the macro details, as well as the recipe's relevant classifications: Dairy-Free, Gluten-Free, Pour and Cook, Soy-Free, Vegan, Vegetarian, 5 Ingredients or Less, Under 45 Minutes. I love this authors Indian instant pot cookbook and since I follow a keto diet I was super excited to pre-order this cookbook. Sadly, I’m returning it. It does not follow the keto guidelines and the net carb counts are extremely high on many of the dishes. Sad to say, this won’t work for my needs.

My husband said it was the best he ever had.If all the Keto Instant Pot cookbooks out there, this is by far the best.

Nothing in the description stated it was primarily Indian recipes. Those simply won't work for my family; I cook for multiple family members who have IBS.The remaining sound good, but only if I overlook that they aren't true Keto. Complete waste, returning ASAP.

I ordered the hard copy which is due out later this month and then learned that I could get the digital copy early at a discount. It arrived yesterday and I already made one of the recipes. Urvashi's recipes are almost fool-proof if you follow the directions correctly and this is coming from someone who is not a "cook" in the traditional sense of the word. This is my second cook-book by Urvashi (plus I've tried recipes from her Twosleevers.com website) and so far, everyone has been a home run. I can't wait for the hard copy to come out also! Thanks for the great recipes Urvashi, and the clear directions for those of us who don't yet cook intuitively! You definitely have a fan. The great thing about this book is the recipes don't taste "low carb" and are not just for those following a Ketogenic diet, so my "non-keto" husband has been equally pleased.

New to Keto and just the intro alone will give you a broad idea about the diet/way of eating. I have been poring over the book, will be cooking some dishes this weekend, can’t wait. This is not your simple American dump recipes. But they aren’t hard either! Very tasty. I see there are a few key ingredients and some unique ingredients. But hey I think we can all agree “diets” can be boring. This doesn’t even remind me of my goal to lose weight. I have cooked previous recipes of hers. Easy, simple and delish. You have nothing to lose and happy tastebuds to gain!

Fast shipping. Excellent book very well written. I also bought 2 more of his books on video security and later plan to buy one of his earlier editions of this book just for reference on older locks and info for my locksmith journey.

A good quality book... covers the information about marble fairly well

If you love those small, round, colorful balls of glass, you will love this book. Very informative book helps you identify them and learn some history along the way. Highly recommended to me and now to you!

WOW what a great book. I've collected marbles for several years and I'm always on the lookout for material that will help me learn more about these little works of art.

While I do not hate it, it does not have enough pictures for me, I am a serious collector, need lots of pictures, there is a lot of detailed stuff in there, without examples. Still good to have, just more for me is needed.
